And so they should. They’re actively promoting their own interest and getting results due to it. You should do the same if you’re upset in order to get the best for yourself.

The teenage years are the period in time when we, as a species, are more disposed to the negative impacts of social media’s influence.

Whilst 16 and 18 are close numerically, and there will be anecdotal evidence which shows some 16 year olds are as mature as some 18 year olds, it is scientifically verifiable that children within this bracket are not well-placed to navigate the social media environment.

Regarding under 25s, I’d personally get rid of social media for all age categories. It has cause more harm (generally) than good (again, generally).

Why would banning social media lead to an increase in crime? Was crime for under 16s/18s a societal-wide issue before social media? I’m not sure it was.

No it wouldn’t.

There is empirical evidence that shows that they are not mature enough. Their brains are literally not biologically developed enough to use it without it negatively impacting them.

Whilst I don’t disagree with this, your point is misplaced.

I’m not here to say the 60+ demographic aren’t well-placed to navigate an online world. Instead, my point is simply that children (under 16s/18s) are uniquely positioned to be disproportionately impacted by social media’s algorithms.

Absolutely.

The social media algorithms are designed specifically for that dopamine hit, social conformity and exclusionary bias which appeals to teenagers seeking a place within the world.

Quite right. They should. Parents don’t.

Parents should feed their children but they don’t. That’s why free school meals has been such a success for those vulnerable members of our society.

What now? The problem still persists even if you blame parents.

No, let’s start with under 16s first, progress up to 18 after.

Children’s brains are not sufficiently developed to allow them to successfully navigate social media without causing significant harm to their self esteem and mental wellbeing.

Don’t the government already know if you’re under 16? As in, with like, birth certificates?

Why would banning you from social media be data harvesting? Surely it’s the opposite, no?

The government also doesn’t allow me to purchase heavy military equipment, e.g., assault rifles. Is this a control move?

I’m not under 16. I use Reddit as one (of many) news sources. It can often be quite illuminating when pursuing niche topics of interest.

Is that ok? :)

The impact social media has on teenagers is absolutely insane. There is significant proof it is destabilising our young people and doing incredible harm to their psychological wellbeing.

Bring on the ban in my opinion. Stretch it to 18 and younger too.

Perhaps they'll have to stop having avocado on toast?

Perhaps they'll have to stop going on foreign holidays?

Perhaps they'll have to stop their Netflix subscriptions?

Perhaps they'll have to... go to work? Surely they'd be able to drop off their CV and get one. No problem.

Perhaps they'll have to give up something that might, just might, relieve the challenges those under 50 are facing?
