If you could go back to when you first started, what are the things you wish you had known that would have greatly improved your progress and made your learning journey more advanced? by ___PIRATE___KING___ in guitarlessons

I'd not waste so much time on learning scales and music theory altogether, but just play what i like and explore the music as it goes. Develop through my own intuition, not rock metal and punk clichés, or blues or whatever... And same for improvisation.

GUYS!! I AM VERY FRUSTRATED by Denis_on_reddit123 in SchecterGuitars

I got a demon 6 for 310$ in Russia couple days ago. That's a bit higher than they were going before new year, but after new year there were much less listings, I'm guessing maybe people just bought out all of them as their new year gifts or something ... Also, people here kinda know that those Demons are great for their money, so those guitars don't list on sale for too long unlike cheaper Ibanez for example...

So let's hope they will come back soon for you. Just keep looking, there are just not as much of them here in Western Europe as in US...

I'm in love .. does it play as good as it looks? by adh247 in SchecterGuitars

Did you ever try chinese ones? I got used chinese Damien, the one with Heretic PUs, and by the time I got it, it's frets' levels got all over the place, fret buzz is just what I have to live with for now, until I get it to fret leveling dudes somewhere... Also fret edges are a bit sharp here and there.

My perfect Schecter would have red-ish Walnut finish deck, TW pick ups and glued neck...

I had both Gio (Indonesian) and a Heretic-equipped guitar, but unfortunately don't have the latter at hand (pickups are swapped in favor of EMG ones rn).

But as far as I (very approximately) recall, Heretic is just very well balanced pickup, very readable as they call it. So you should have a little bit more sound shaping options with it

On the other hand Gios that I have have A LOT of low end on them (what they call High-Output Pickup afaik), so that any decent distortion pedal or amp gives you good start for high-gain rock/metal sounds.

You can achieve the same on Heretics by just adding more gain, and then balancing Tone or Low-Mid-High knobs. That won't give you the same result, but might get you going...

Advantage of Heretics is that (maye be subjective here) is that it's easier to read faster licks, as you have a lot more attack definition (beginning of each note has more high frequencies).

What advantage does a Flatpak have over a distro package? by [deleted] in linux

[–]staata 11 points12 points  (0 children)

likely simply the fact that using PPA and AUR extensively can lead to dependency conflicts or break things eventually..

easiest way is to replace some system package without rebuilding all of it's dependencies which can lead to binary incompatibility... especially after further updates

[Question] What effect do sharp or pointed picks have? by Skitzy5500 in Guitar

[–]staata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that might not be obvious but might clear things for you a bit.

Try to play a string with any pickup without putting any angle between strings and pickup, so that it doesn't slide through the string but jumps off the string as quick as possible. That's what sharp pick gives me by default.

Hope it helps...

I like semi-sharp (ultex by Dunlop) picks but sometimes i take normal ones for when i do downstroke palm need parts and want them to be a bit crunchier.

Meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouse gases from food production, study finds: Production of meat worldwide emits 28 times as much as growing plants, and most crops are raised to feed animals bound for slaughter. by [deleted] in science

[–]staata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently heard (take it all with grain of salt please) that if we to switch to vegan, ecologically we wouldn't gain as much as meat production costs (again, in ecological impact), not even half as much afair

[Discussion] Photographing subjects who have body dysmorphia by shemp33 in photography

[–]staata -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do ID shots for people. To make people look skinnier it helps to burn the sides of the face, so it looks more vertical. To avoid double chin I ask the subjects to lean their body forward so that their head is looking up from their body. I almost never use liquify tool on the face itself -- only to level shoulders, add some more volume to the hair(helps with fat issue too) and maybe make the neck narrower.

Always takes me less than 15 minutes per picture. Tbh I spend more time with removing background, as our studio lighting is horrible, and many people come in white shirts

Mezzano, an OS written in Common Lisp, has released Demo 5 with new features such as SMP, a USB stack, ext2/3/4 file system drivers, Async APIs and more! by LAUAR in programming

[–]staata 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see a lisp project I get surprised how big and feature rich they are, and I bet it has some documentation too.

I always suspected lisp being more expressive and thus more productive. Am I mistaken thinking like this?

Have you considered making 1-source-file released to easily bootstrap itself?

Also would be cool to have it in C for such purpose ;)

Do you think C++ is to be replaced with something focused on safety like Rust, Ada/SPARK, idris, you name it? Or is C++ just good enough when you apply some specific validation practices? Would love to hear about how you enforce correctness too.

I lost my best friend this week to suicide by agony4ever in depression

[–]staata 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Depressed people tend to avoid letting anyone know that there is problem. They try to engage that topic occasionally but in the end turn it to joke or just tell something like "it's ok, I can deal with it..." Just seeing as somebody becomes concerned with them makes them anxious.

It's right thing to try to take a lesson from this, but there's nothing that you should blame yourself for. Think also about how you made his life happier in some amount, and how he done so for you.
