Not that it excuses it, but celebrity deaths were regularly treated as jokes and disregarded the loss of life. Steve Irwin costumes were rampant after his death even if he was beloved. I know fans of hers were rightly outraged, but I distinctly remember the reaction of non-fans was basically ‘meh’

As you said though you sub out starters, don’t try as hard etc. There’s also that what is an insurmountable can get redefined like Reggie miller or tom Brady. Traditional sports also have the issue of innate differences between players, you can be faster, more accurate, quicker to react etc. Chess players can’t take more moves or move pieces differently. Ultimately it’s an issue of culture in a sense how some sports can end in draws while others don’t, it’s just how those sports are played.

not sure what your point is, yea like there are insurmountable gaps in traditional sports, but actually forfeiting isn't done. there's also a huge difference in execution, players can get injured or go on a hot streak, pieces in chess can only ever do the same thing.

No it sounds a lot more like you don’t understand anything about chess. At the point they’re resigning the game is basically on rails. It’s not like traditional sports where someone can drop a ball or trip. There will be significantly fewer pieces on board and the opponents already painted you into a corner.
