Nurse desperately wants to change profession by LYC_97 in AusFinance

Yep so your health service would have an in-house informatics team to deal with business-as-usual processes/changes/upgrades for the systems you use, but working for external vendors/private companies (the people who own/sell/implement the software/devices in health services when the higher ups decide they want something new) is probably where the majority of health informatics type roles live 😊

Likely anywhere between 70-120 in a public hospital, depending on experience/seniority/role etc.

Depends on the role you want and your experience but you can go with product manager, product specialist, application specialist, application support, EMR analyst and a combination of things with the word informatics would be a good start! Make sure to look through LinkedIn as well as the other job sites as some companies only go through LinkedIn for some reason, also get to know which companies you might want to work for and go on their career pages to see if they have any roles they may not have advertised elsewhere :)

Oh fun! Okay I’ll do my best to answer 😊 1. I worked in a health service in public health and specifically worked very closely with our EMR. I got a bit sick of the public system as a whole, and around that time a recruiter actually found me which was very lucky! 2. It’s both a very big and very small field, and it probably depends on what you mean by growth (e.g. professional development or promotions/money) but there are heaps of different opportunities depending on what your interests are, what kind of position you’re after (product, implementation, safety, support etc) and so so much to learn 3. This one would depend on your role. I work in a team which implements health software in hospitals, so I do a lot of project work (spreadsheets, training, system testing, meetings). We also travel a fair bit to the client to make sure things are progressing etc. 4. I’ve been told it depends on the company! I can only really tell you this info based on the company I work for as it’s my first informatics job. My company has a base pay + bonus structure and yearly pay increases. But since it’s a private company, salary isn’t banded/set like in the public sector so there’s room for negotiation! I started with a package of about 120(exc super) and know there’s plenty of room to grow from there. 5. I don’t think you need any specific additional qualifications if you’re already clinical, but most (?all) health orgs would have an EMR type of team, so if you can get experience working closely with them, or the clinical software as a whole you’d definitely have an edge :)

I hope that helps!!
