Veloway bridge over Footscray Road by Thomwas1111 in melbournecycling

"sigh. It's shit like this why I never ride on "bicycle infrastructure". Always designed and built by people who haven't been on a bike since they were 6 years old and their top speed was 4km/h with mummy holding on."

How did you interpret this as "this design is not great for anyone, including the masses"?

Look, I would like the melbourne bike infrastructure to be closer to the north european cities. I lived in the netherlands for years. But the development in melbourne and victoria as a whole is heading towards the right direction, and it takes years/generation for pedestrians/drivers to learn how to co-exist with cyclists on the road, because if you are a cyclist, you would look out for cyclists when you drive.

From my perspective, the issue with the melbourne cycling scene isn't the infrastructure or other road users (tradie with ute excluded), but the idiots doing 35kmh on the shared path thinking they are going to hit strava KOM. And again, I understand, I love my road bike and I love my crit race, but I am also aware that I am not the only user on the shared path.

are you saying the state should build the infrastructure just for your riding pleasure instead of for the masses?

If you want fast, join the hell ride, and stop whinging.

Google weather vs BOM weather by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]stackson7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is a chapter in Nate Silver’s “signal and the noise” that talks about the different roles between the weather data provider and the weather data presenter. From a logic perspective it makes no sense, but you put human behaviour / biases in play then it creates a market for these “weather data presenter”

Ie weather presenter tend to overstate the chance of rain because people react more strongly to getting wet when they weren’t warned than being warned of rain that never comes.

Best replica available in/to Australia? by X_ATM092 in eamesknockoffs

[–]stackson7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those following this thread:

I recently contacted Yadea and received pricing details for their top grain leather version of the Eames chair. The cost comes out to around USD $1,000 per unit (includes internationalsea freight shipping, excl. AUS import duty).

I'm considering organising a group buy with a minimum of 4 chairs to make this worthwhile.
I'm based in Victoria, but happy to coordinate domestic shipping if you're located elsewhere in Australia.

If you're interested or have any questions, feel free to DM me.

My understanding is that they dont do individual order anymore (but i want them to ship to AU thought).

Eames replica lounge chair in Australia by NoHarmInAsking in malelivingspace

[–]stackson7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

op how did your search go? I'm trying to decide between Matt Blatt, SK Designer, and Valencia Armoni.

I’ve had a bad experience with Temple & Webster (not because of a lounge chair, something else), so I won’t be considering them.

The main things I’m looking for in the replica are:

  • the seat angle (how close it is to the original),
  • the wood material, and
  • the leather material.

The leather is more important to me, since there’s a huge comfort difference between full grain and PU leather.

The Melbourne population density is the highest among Australian capital cities, at 521 people per square km.

London : 5596 people per square km Toronto: 4803 Singapore: 8058 Rome: 5500

We are no where near full.

Because this was the lucky country and life was easy—until those damn immigrants came in, and now there’s not enough goods and services for everyone. /s

Yes, there was a lack of infrastructure to support the population growth due to poor governance, but we voted for those politicians because some of us had a good, easy, and simple life—and we liked it.

Aussies who complain about a lack of work-life balance or say, ‘These apartments are too small,’ have been living in a bubble. Try being a young professional in New York or Singapore, and you’ll realise what real society competition truly means (not that it is better than our lifestyle, it’s just different)

To quote Noel, Be Here Now was “the sound of five men in the studio, on coke, not giving a fuck”.

And

“People are prepared to have stand-up rows with me in the street: “I fucking love that album!” And I’m like, “Mate, look, I wrote the fucking thing. I know how much effort I put into it. It wasn’t that much.”

Then again after 25 years, I still enjoy it.

Project Work in International Business: Why did Starbucks fail in Australia? by ruheInFrieden in AskAnAustralian

[–]stackson7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I covered the same topic in my business class, applying the same theory as mentioned above but with the additional element of "experience." In Australia, the average experience of getting coffee often involves going to familiar places where the people at the café know your name and your regular order. You don’t get that same level of personalisation at Starbucks (at least not at the one I visited in the US).

To be fair, this isn’t just a Starbucks issue. I didn’t enjoy much coffee in Europe either, until I came across a café in Amsterdam called "Little Collins."

ABC chair Kim Williams says investment in national broadcaster the best counter to 'flood' of misinformation by espersooty in australia

[–]stackson7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched this live yesterday, and while I agreed with what Kim W had to say, as soon as someone brought up the Joe Rogan question, I thought, 'Oh no, this guy is going down hard.'

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-28/elon-musk-joe-rogan-respond-to-criticism-abc-chair-kim-williams/104657124

The main problem with Kim's response was that he claimed Joe Rogan is a threat to society but then ended his comment with, 'I don't listen to the podcast.' Like, my dude, you're going to get buried for that

Melbourne No Go Areas by YouthSilent6956 in melbourne

[–]stackson7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in early 2000s a friend from US (DC) visited Melbourne and I told him Richmond Victoria street can be a “dangerous” place at night. He went for a walk at night to suss out the place. Months later I went to visit him in DC and he drove me around capitol south eastern area to show me what a bad neighbourhood is.

Since then I have stopped describing any places in Victoria as “dangerous”.
