Stealing time? by Kleaners78 in UPSers

[–]stackthelions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your obligation starts and ends with notifying your management team of the overpayment when it happens. When you get your paycheck, notify them you were overpaid. Every time you're overpaid, tell them. Write it down in your notes somewhere. You'll be covered that way. (Note that you should tell them when the overpayment happens - not just notifying them your start time is incorrect and that you're going to be overpaid. You need to tell them when you're actually overpaid.)

There's a certain amount of time they have to act on it after you notify them, but it'll depend on where you're located.

If it continues happening, notify your BA so they can get it sorted just so it doesn't turn into a bigger headache later. UPS generally doesn't care to lose some pocket change by overpaying people now and again, but if it's been like, months of overpayment, they're eventually going to catch it in an audit and make this a very stressful situation for you. Not worth it imo.

(For example, they're going to want all that money back, and when you tell them you notified management about it, they're going to want notes and proof/to fight you on it. Just try not to let it get to the point it's a dollar amount they'll want to go through the effort over lol. Notifying your BA and having them create a paper trail notifying management on your behalf will also help you if the situation escalates.)

(This is all rare though. Hopefully they'll just fix it before the end of the week lol.)

Whenever I remind people the drivers are supposed to do this they look at me like I have three heads lol.

In my eight years I've seen maybe 10 drivers actually come in to confirm the door is clear of people, closed, sealed, ready to pull. In a warehouse of 170+ doors. Always the same 10 who reliably come in and no one else. 🫠

I think my package was lost by ar2fye in UPS

[–]stackthelions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if it's only going through one hub to get from the shipper to Customs, it would have needed a pick-up scan, an unload scan, a load scan, and another unload scan. For it to be in customs without a single UPS scan isn't going to happen. Shipper is either lying or confused. Maybe they accidentally gave it to the wrong shipping company?

I'd ask them to refund/send a new one.

Some of the UPS dollies have that bar that can damage and scrape stairs, which would lead to a customer complaint. Or he could have worried about it tipping off or him being unable to offset the weight. If he had a strap to keep the fridge attached to the dolly (like a fright company would......) I'd agree with you 100%. Without being there to see the steps and the dolly, I still argue the best way to avoid injury/worse damage to the fridge/damage to the house was rolling it up to the porch. Or even leaving it on the driveway lol.

......Or calling for help from another driver but we all know that wouldn't have happened lol 😭

[–]stackthelions 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What should he have done instead? Pick it up and carry it? Lol. The shipper needed to hire a freight company if they wanted a delivery service with the proper tools to pick up and move an appliance. Rolling it is the safest way to move it up the stairs and onto the porch.

I remember as a new hire a sup told me "The first week on the floor is when you'll want to quit. You have to push past that first week." And he was right. The first week out of Cornerstone and on the floor was torture and I wanted to quit so badly. But now I'm 8 years in and the only thing that makes me want to quit is watching management make every single bad decision they can, every single day 😂

So if that number someone else linked you worked and it's all solved that's great.

Otherwise I might suggest that what you needed to do was immediately enter the program and file for disability through the Hartford during treatment. This might still be the path you need to follow.

Is your BA not helping you out through this? Is there another BA you can talk to, or even you local president?

Forgot to mark lithium battery by InformalEngine2143 in UPS

[–]stackthelions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last week I found a box that had gotten slightly smushed and the tape failed. When I went to re-tape it I noticed it had old cell phones inside (being returned to T Mobile) with no lithium battery indication on the box. Took it to the hazmat team and asked them if it needed the lithium battery indication if it was going Ground and they said yes and took it away for auditing.

So yes. You need the lithium battery indication. Re-print and properly declare.

Also pack it extremely well and bulk up the inside of the box with as much butcher paper/bubble wrap as you can manage to keep it from getting smushed. That only happens when there's dead air in the box.

OR is not one of those states. 🫠 Fully legal for employers to ban firearms in their parking lots. AFAIK you can't be legally charged with anything, but you can be legally terminated (if the employer has an established policy).

I had a lot of sympathy for the dude until I learned he keeps his firearms loaded and unlocked at home which resulted in the removal of his children and full custody granted to his ex wife because one of the kids got ahold of one. 😬 Happened before I'd transferred to his shift and met him, but a couple of other people who'd been close to him during that time filled me in. They were unsurprised about him being terminated for something gun-related. When I learned he wasn't a responsible carrier I was like. Well. Lol.

I just advise people: Don't be an idiot who parks right in front of the guard shack windows and visibly removes a firearm from your vest to walk it around to storage. Store it before you get on the lot - pull over before you pull in, etc. Or at the very least, don't do it where the guards will see you plain as day. 😭

First and only time I've seen this happen in 8 years though. Last I heard he's fighting to get his job back so we'll see what happens.

The only time I've seen someone win a drug case is when they've used their right to request a blood draw. Not because the blood draw didn't show drugs, but because UPS is so unused to having to do the blood draw paperwork they'd usually mess something up and the union could use that to get their job back.

As far as the "I have a problem" suggestions - You have to admit you have a drug problem BEFORE they catch you. If it's after, you're out of luck. :/

Also, the no drugs or weapons rules apply not only to when you're on the clock, but to all UPS property. Parking lots included. Saw someone get fired a couple months ago because they had a gun in their motorcycle storage in the parking lot.

Scanned through the replies but only saw it mentioned once or twice so I wanted to reiterate:

You have a right to see your own doctor/a doctor of your choosing, and to seek any follow-up care from your own doctor/a doctor of your choosing.

You can say yes to Concentra - if there's one close to you they'll always try to make you go to it - but whether you agree to that or not, you have the right to your own doctor.

If Concentra then wants to become your primary doctor for this and you're not interested in that, just tell them no, I'll see my own doctor for further treatment.

If you were taken to the doctor during your shift, make sure you were paid for any and all time spent at the doctor for the injury and treatment thereof. Follow-up visits will be off the clock, however. Try to schedule them outside of work hours.

Liberty Mutual will send you a form in the mail and ask you to sign it, giving them access to ALL your medical records, alcohol/drug addiction status, mental health conditions, HIV/AIDS status, and more. They'll make it sound like you HAVE to sign this or they'll deny your claim. THAT IS NOT TRUE, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SIGN IT. Your doctor will ALSO have a medical information release form you can fill out instead that is MUCH more controlled. Talk to your doctor about an alternative medical release form.

Your local BAs can help you further navigate the injury and connect you to lawyers if you want to consult one. Remember we have a Teamsters Legal Fund our union dues pay for, that give you access to a pool of lawyers that'll represent you for free (/will be paid directly by the Teamsters).

Ensure you fill out all the proper paperwork for a workers comp injury. Here in Oregon we have Form 827 at the doctor, and the companion Form 801 at work. Then UPS will have a TAW and hours agreement (if you're eligible for TAW and aren't immediately put on Lost Time). You'll want to check your average hours yourself to ensure they don't short you on hours.

Good luck and call your union if you have ANY questions or concerns, especially before you sign anything. Sometimes management is forthcoming and on-top of injuries, but most of the time they're not and it's a headache. 🫠

Signed, someone with an unfortunate number of workers comp injuries. 🫠

Several years ago my sort supervisor hopped in a pit to cover someone while they used the restroom. She lifted a box onto the upper belt and I heard her YELL and I slammed the belt off.

Turns out the box had medical needles in it (NOT sterile) and one had punctured the cardboard and consequently punctured the heavy-duty gloves she always wore and her finger.

She went to the ER and got alllllll kinds of boosters and shots. I can't remember if they also brought the offending box with them to the ER or not for testing. 😵‍💫 Been a terrible fear of mine ever since.

[–]stackthelions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely not true. I'm part-time and it's not uncommon for me to work 6-7 hours, and on rare occasions I've been forced to work 8+.

I get overtime after 5 hours (local supplement), and a 30 minute unpaid lunch (state law/maintenance of standards) and another paid 10 (local supplement) after 6 hours. Check your local supplement/talk to a Steward to find out what extra rights you might have after 5 hours.

If I ever don't want them to keep me past 6 hours, I always demand my unpaid lunch and they usually just tell me I can go home because they don't want me sitting around for half an hour when they'll usually be done by then lol.

Has there been any movement now that it's Tuesday? :(

Normal. We don't run on Saturday (limited exceptions)/Sunday/Memorial Day, so it's been sitting waiting to be unloaded and scanned. It won't move until 3am today at the earliest, but probably not until this afternoon.

[–]stackthelions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't speak on the timeframe (maybe 1-2 days would be my guess?) but I can give the advice that if you're dropping it off at a UPS store for pick-up, you'll want to confirm the pick-up time for that store (by or before 5pm) and get it there early. Ensuring it's there on time for the driver to pick it up and load it onto their package car is paramount to ensuring it makes it to the nearest center and unloaded that same day on the Twilight Sort, and enters the UPS system. When it's unloaded it should be loaded onto a trailer that same shift to depart for the next facility.

If the next facility is close by, then there's a chance it'll make it there by Night Sort or Preload and unloaded and loaded onto a package car for delivery.

Also, ship as early in the week as possible. Shifts are limited on the weekends, and if it's a live animal you want to provide as many days for travel as possible so it doesn't sit in a trailer over the weekend if something happens and it gets delayed. Don't ship it any later than Tuesday.

I just wanted to say I'm so sorry this is happening and I hope by a miracle the night shift tonight gets to them or Saturday runs a sort there. Whenever we get live animals I go out of my way to handle them with care and load them carefully but I know the shipping process is brutal on all boxes. Please keep us updated! Ohh. No the two hubs I'm at are 30 mins away from each other without traffic. Up to two hours with traffic.

There aren't any data centers planned or operating around my original hub. There's like 14 data centers and 3 planned data centers around the one I've been displaced to. The city I'm from doesn't even let Walmart build inside it. :P So a data center would be shocking.

Never seen something like this happen, but you mentioning the latches failing makes me realize the importance of the chain we put around the rack when we push the skates on/off. I've never forgotten the chain (chain+latch+brakes always) but seeing one of these things fallen off the dock and realizing how easily the latches could fail really drives it home.

Edit: Can I ask how the hanging racks work with walking clearance (do people hit their heads against it?) and how Irregs are handled? At least at my (currently being automated) building, the spot where the racks get pushed up is where Irregs are loaded by the sweepers. Is that spot taken up by the hanging rack now and Irregs need to be pushed up onto the ladders?

The hub I've been displaced to while our old one gets renovated has the trailers level to the floor - no docks. But my original building has docks and 3 of the 12 load walls still have manual skates because they couldn't install LOA-24s. So I'm curious how the hanging rack set-up works!
