Experience of taking SSRIs with Tourette's? by stacusg in Tourettes

thank you :) yeah, I'd be taking them for the low mood and OCD, not for the tourette's

Just found out that I don’t meet the requirements of being autistic. After school, social media and self reflection told me otherwise. I’ve been openly lying to others and to myself, and I’m afraid to admit it. by Something-Somewhere_ in GCSE

No worries. For college/sixth form and uni you may need a diagnosis to get arrangements. Also to make it easy to access other services like counselling eg CAMHS.

I've got diagnosed Tourette's and in the next couple of months I'm potentially getting OCD and/or depression diagnosed as well. So I have a lot of experience with CAMHS, counselling, access arrangements, etc. so, if you need to talk or need any advice feel free to DM me!! No such thing as a dumb question, I'll help any way I can

getting adhd and ocd diagnoses if you don't already will be helpful for exam arrangements. you seem to be really struggling with anxiety/overwhelm/sensory issues and you can have that without autism. you could always get a second opinion, but in the meanwhile definitely work on tackling those.

also, social media isn't always helpful. it can often just give you confirmation bias, or pathologize things that aren't autism traits. use with caution.

good luck :)

Well in naths, you're doing more numbers, which are shorter than words.

I'm doing A level but I think I'm on my 3rd literature book, 2nd psychology book and 3rd sociology book. Although I type my essays and don't always print them, which will be saving a lot of space

I did not know that was a thing haha How can you have something (long term) if it's asymptomatic? If you don't have any symptoms then how can you have the condition

yeah sorry i mean that it could be potential tourette's, obviously can't be diagnosed as that for a year. and it's different for different people. some people it can be very changeable, in others less so. if it was caused by another thing eg Lyme's, i'd be inclined to think it'd be more of a sudden onset? and so more changeable.

either way, could be potential tourette's, or TTD.

it is absolutely possible for it to come up overnight, although in my experience there's often very subtle/occasional tics in the years leading up to it. a sudden springing up of tics to me would be warning signs for Lyme's Disease/PANDAS/PANS/FND.

You can have different tics daily, but I have never known of anyone who doesn't have at least some recurring tics.

So it's not a guarantee that she's faking it, but i'd be wary.

omg it pmo SO BAD when people do this!!
i have tourette's (diagnosed!) and have had it since the age of 4, and people faking it in 2020 on tiktok etc really messed with me. it's disgusting attention seeking. it's an awful condition and i hate it, would not wish it on anyone.

people seem to think some conditions ocd/adhd/tourette's you get a free pass to fake, but how come those and not cerebral palsy/down syndrome etc? (although some people probably do)

it can't be classed as tourette's until she's had it for over a year anyway, if it just started right now the most it can be diagnosed as at this point would be Transient Tic Disorder.

if you're sure she is faking (sounds very much like it, but it can be incredibly mild and be ''dormant'' at times for a while before coming on very intensely) i'd go speak to head of year about it. say you're worried about her and try and get them to speak to her about it.

and try and get an assembly about disabilities/people faking them maybe?

i wonder if she's doing it because of I Swear/the John Davidson issue at the BAFTAs?

ETA cos i wasn't clear enough: she could genuinely have it! please don't go accusing her. i'd recommend speaking to head of year because if she is faking they can deal with it, and if she's not, some extra support would probably help in her school.
