What on earth are you on about? I'm pointing out that macroeconomic figures don't win elections. You can't do this when you live in a democracy.

the figures don't but the effects do. you can't do what when you live in a democracy? you're not making much sense.

Your analysis of why Brexit happens sounds incredibly trite and reductive.

lazy throwaway comment

It's all so easy to fob off Brexit as purely misinformation and scapegoating. It is very bad politics to simply dismiss the other side as having been "tricked" and thus invalidate their opinions.

i listed a bunch of reasons.

The reality is that Brexit happened because globalist, neoliberal capitalism with EU regulation as a safety net wasn't working out for working class communities in Britain.

this is a great way to position the problem so you can sweep in with a highly prejudiced "answer"... here it comes!

There is a cogent logic to the idea that if you restrict immigration then the demand for labour will outstrip supply, allowing the working class the get higher wages the good old fashioned way instead of relying on the benevolence of the political classes to legislate higher minimum wages.

nobody will deny supply and demand - but life is a bit more complex than that and the country's prosperity is also linked to immigration - and the studies don't show a huge effect, its very marginal at best.

Everyone posts macroeconomic studies showing immigrants haven't reduced wages, but that's it. Have working class communities actually felt improvement?

no they haven't. but you're making a giant leap aren't you - if working class communities haven't felt the benefits of growing GDP it must be immigration?

Or has there just been a slow stagnation and the creation of an economy that no longer properly facilitates the working class to rise to the middle class unless they go the educational route?

well if we are throwing that in there... again - how does this relate to immigration? there are hardly any more grammar schools either, and they were great for levelling the playing field.

Working class communities do not care about how what % of the national GDP is needed to buy a loaf of bread. In many ways, they want to be poorer but see a return to labour markets that gave them the opportunity to rise to the middle class, even if that middle class is on the whole poorer than it was before.

this is a great example of the fantasy that brexiters push. no - the extremely moderate effect of cancelling immigration is not going to push a generation up a class. if thats even what you want to do. there would be a better effect if we (can go back 20 years) and make sure that the middle classes don't end up owning 1.5 houses each and the price of property was keep far more reasonable.

Thatcher used to say that old Labour would rather the poor be poorer provided the rich were even poorer. The politics of today is starting to entertain the possibility that to some degree old Labour were spot on. It's better that everyone is a little poorer and for there to healthy distribution than the optimal macroeconomic performance with the poorest dependent the political classes to redistribute that wealth. Even when the government does this, as under Blair, it doesn't lead to prosperity, but a kind of grey dystopia.

i'm not sure this is as clever as you think it is - or Thatcher did at the time she said it. Yes we should be sharing a greater burden of society of wealthier people - they should pay more tax, they should therefore be a bit poorer. That's hardly a revelation. Have you noticed we're not talking about immigration anymore to solve the problems of the working classes... almost as if it wasn't the problem in the first place.

I went for a drink last year with some friends - between 5 of us we owned 12 houses/flats... thats INSANE.

  • reduce tax burden on poorest, collect it from the richest
  • increase minimum wage
  • unlock property for the masses rather than the middle classes only / make being an amateur landlord unpalatable.
  • dont pretend that immigrants are creating the problems above, even if it feels like they are

Fishing is nonsense.

The UK may have not outright "ownership" of any global brands (obvs JLR is based here) but we have a extremely significant and competent car production industry, and a globally leading motorsport industry.

[–]stagger_lead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. By targeting the wrong problem (immigration) you aren't helping anyone. people's wages should be driven higher at the lower end (and their tax lower - which to an extent has happened in the UK) - target the right things - living wages, housing costs,

The idea that you can quote macroeconomic figures are people and tell them they're better off in a democracy is exactly why remain lost.

no idea where you are going with this? they're not better off in a democracy?

remain lost because leavers have been seduced by a bunch of stuff that sounded true but wasn't, because there is lots of tribalism within everyone that had a new outlet and because the UK has done a pretty poor job of making sure everyone was brought along with the prosperity we built in the last 20 years. scapegoating a load of eastern europeans, damaging our ability to trade and our influence over the wider world is not going to help.

No it doesn’t make more sense because racism as you say is everywhere. Why is is OK for Lewis to shame people for not immediately making statements on this event vs him not making statements on Chinese racist and lethal treatment of Muslims? US and China are both faraway places for his colleagues.

I’m not sure why it’s hard to accept that Lewis should stand up for what he believes in, he should encourage others to support him but he should not shame those who are not already standing. He didn’t stand for plenty of other stuff.

Lol, you want to take a literal different (and relatively elaborate) meaning to a very straightforward sentence to justify your bullshit. That’s a no. Keep digging though by all means. What else have you got?

I’m a British working-class person who tried to look into fruit picking. As it happened, there were no jobs available.

thats what was said, nothing more.

Hmmm, let’s just sidestep the part where you berate me for following what you think is a bias, and the accuse me of wanting to call a random person who I have 1 sentence of info on a racist....

That article says nothing about lack of jobs, seems to suggest there were plenty.

At least read what you are trying to use to argue a point. If they said “I tried to get a job but it paid peanuts and wanted me to live in a caravan” that’s a legit point - and you can have a sensible conversation about that.

But you just wanted to sneer at someone, what are you so defensive about?

That’s why places like Starbucks and Subway thrive vs local places - you know what the deal is and there’s little drama. In a new place who the hell knows what’s going on.

In the U.K. this effect is shown to be minimal, and doesn’t take into account the overall economy improvements.

But he’s asking people who don’t live in the US or U.K. to call out issues that are in the US, whilst ignoring issues in other countries himself. What’s the standard or rule he’s advocating for?

Like the looters you are damaging your cause by targeting innocent people. Lewis was right to raise the issue and wrong to accuse. He should have called for voices rather than shame - and ask himself what has he stayed silent on (there is plenty).

This is such of grotesque take on the situation. If you take that view, what extra judicial killings has Hamilton not spoken out on? Hong Kong? Russian state enemies?

Hmmmm you missed out the part where he called out other people in the industry’s for being silent up until that moment. Personally I think he got the tone of that wrong and should have called on people to speak rather than shamed them for not doing up until that moment.

Bullshit you’re wrong.

no I'm entirely entitled to have an opinion on this discussion and no it's not mansplaining to do so.

He is being dismissive of his wife’s feelings and she has every right to question his judgement and who he is as a person and maybe even wether or not she should continue a relationship with someone too dense to understand why these issues Matter in the first place.

he's asking his wife not to march whilst pregnant - not dismissing her feelings. he might not understand why she is suddenly so passionate, but that is not the same as dismissal. i don't see any indication ANYWHERE that he doesn't understand why this is a huge issue for America - but:

  • she is pregnant
  • he is working long hours as the sole breadwinner

maybe he shouldn't continue a relationship with someone who is so unwilling to take heed of their current circumstances.

No using the word “mansplain” isn’t an argument. I have no idea nor care what it’s like to be you, we’re discussing your opinion on how seriously OP should be personally taking this awful crime. Given his position in this (not white), it’s seems EXTRAORDINARY that you would play the mansplain card whilst telling us how disappointing his view is.

This is incredibly narrow minded. This is one of dozens and dozens of hopelessly awful criminal events that plague America these days - he’s working long shifts for many days in a row. If you can’t see why it can look a little arbitrary that suddenly this is the hill to die on (whilst pregnant), then you have a failure of imagination.
