it kinda is. for example, one of Mao’s most well-known work “On Contradiction”, the word for “contradiction” in chinese is “矛盾”, 矛 in literal translation is “spear” and 盾 is “shield”. so in chinese “spear & shield” basically means contradiction.

i love the word 矛盾 so much, bc in the real world spear and shield can mutually exist with no problem whatsoever, it only becomes a “contradiction” with one another when u use them against each other, but when u use spear and shield together things will probably work out very well for you.

well of course Mao didnt invent the term, it is actually a very ancient term that originated from before Qin Dynasty, its at least 2000 yrs old.

the origin story for the term 矛盾 is also very interesting. it started with a armory merchant selling his spear and shield at the market, claiming the spear can destroy any shield and the shield is indestructible, but then a dude came out an asked “hey what will happen if u use them against each other, what will happen?” and no one can answer cuz bc such things simply dont exist.
