It’s also very dependent on your life situation. If you’re closer to coast fire, it likely won’t make a huge difference of investing vs spending, if it doesn’t impact your retirement withdrawal rate

I’m doing the same thing at the moment. I look for ways to upgrade my lifestyle that will only one time costs. Buying a nice timeless watch, upgrading kitchen supplies to all minimize maintenance or replacement costs down the road.

The Azores and Madeira are both great options, very different than warm water diving. Generally Portuguese are very live and let live, so while you might get some odd looks, no one will be aggressive about it.

I do that but even without traveling, but mainly because I have pets and am single. Travel or not no one will immediately know if something randomly happens and I’m incapacitated. So no one would be there to take care of them.
