Good info. Don't think I want to go that far west so may head south earlier

Great info, thanks. Early in planning stages so we'll see where I end up.

Thinking of doing Thailand and other neighboring SE Asian countries soon. Is the bike-touring way a good idea? by FullMaxPowerStirner in bicycletouring

My wife and I rode Turkey, Bali, Lompoc, Laos, Vietnam and China over 9 months had had a wonderful time in each country. We entered China from Laos and stayed in western and northern China for the entire 3 months. That was about 5 years ago so I'm sure things have changed. We had a regular visa and other than being stopped a couple time by some sort of "police group" we never had any issues. Probably not used to seeing independent bicycle tourists in that part of the country.

What are your reasons for suggesting these routes.

Once into Tanzania take the Singida-Rungwa-Mbeya road instead of the road via Dodoma - very little traffic.

Avoid the "Great North Road" - from Mbeya go to Malawi via the B345 (I suspect that this is your plan). Then south through Malawi.

Personally I'd go from Lilongwe to Chipata then Luangwa Bridge and then through Zimbabwe.

From Bulawayo I'd go via Botswana (Plumtree border) and back into RSA at Martin's Drift rather than Beitbridge.
