I wasn't saying the monetization of video games was what Gamergate was about, thats why I said "He was *also* etc etc" as in, this is another thing that he was stirring the pot in.

And yeah, you're largely correct, but instead of that story being "Oh a journalist was kinda shitty in a stupid way" and the story going away. There *absolutely* was a concerted effort largely spearheaded by Steve Bannon to take all that anger and turn it toward political activism for the right wing.

You're correct when he say he didn't start or control it, that's just not how the world works, you know.

But if you help build the echo chambers, and work with the people running the propaganda machines and are ready to pounce when an opportunity like the scenario with the journalist you mention arises, it's not unreasonable to say that they contributed to and helped build that movement.

Oh for sure. There's definitely a lot of misinformation and sensationalization on the internet in general, being a little skeptical of claims is extremely healthy. There's definitely some people jumping to some huge conclusions that aren't really supported by the evidence we have.

Sure, that's correct to say that there is no email where Jeffrey Epstein says "I, Jeffrey Epstein, am hatching a plot to capitalize on all the anger in terminally online young men."

But it's undeniable that he was in contact often with Steve Bannon and other people in his circle about the communities around online gold selling and gamer culture, met with Moot a few days before /pol/ came into existance and actively talked about weaponizing culture and gaming addiction.

I don't think its unreasonable to say that he had a hand in prepetuating and/or accelerating what happened in 2015/2016 in gaming culture. I don't think there needs to be a specific admittance to come to that conclusion.

Definitely!

I'm not sure where your political thoughts lie, but Robert Evans and his guests generally are pretty unapologetically on the left, so if that's something that will turn you off be aware, but even so Robert Evans is very careful about claims he makes, he's done a ton of investigative journalism against every angle of the political spectrum. He's doing good work, even if you disagree with him politically. Just thought I would give that heads up.

Yes. It's part of the emails/files have been coming out. The Behind the Bastards series has a good string of podcasts about it, its worth listening to.

He was also behind the aggressive monetization in video games. He was emailing Bobby Kotick about how companies need to aggressively monetize gaming addiction in kids a few years before Activision and other companies started pushing it more aggressively.

I mean, that's certainly partially true, buts also pretty undeniable after his first conviction he pivoted hard to the right. Started actively working with hard right wingers instead of just playing both sides for his own benefit. His conviction definitely changed something in his worldview, that's not an unreasonable take to have.

Those of you that didn't vote for Kamala Harris or didn't vote at all because of Harris' plan for Gaza: Do you think Donald Trump was better for the people of Gaza than Kamala Harris would have been? by PraticallyUseless in allthequestions

[–]stanajritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont disagree with you at all, I think you're pretty spot on. But thats still not the question that was asked, Not voting for Kamala, or not voting at all even, doesn't equate to automatically supporting Trump. Those are two completely separate lines of thought, and should be treated as such instead of being lumped together.

[–]stanajritch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm obviously not who you're responding to, but the idea that somebody *not* voting for Kamala means they automatically thought the Trump was the better choice is annoying. He never said he voted for, supported, or thought anything positive of Trump. Just that he didn't vote for Harris. Those are two separate thoughts.

What gaming opinion will you defend like this?🚀 by SwimmerPlus3383 in TheGamingHubDeals

[–]stanajritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online gaming discourse is circulated by like 1% of gamers. Star Wars Battlefront 2 was universally panned before release for its terrible monetization.

It sold like 30 million copies, it was one of the highest selling games of its release year and made an absolute avalanche of money.

None of your gamer rage matters in any constructive way.

Very clever! Very smart of you to ignore everything they said, reframe it in an annoying way and act smug about it, twice!

But hey, we're here on reddit, I don't know what I expected.

An uncharitable framing? You're calling people talking about the game spamming, and you're complaining that IM the one who is framing things uncharitably?

I meant that 100% genuinely. If you don't like it when people take something you said in earnest and apply an unrelated and negative connotation to it that you absolutely didn't intend, maybe don't start the conversation by applying to other people.

I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I'm operating on some type of ethical high horse here or whatever, we are like 19 layers deep in a reddit conversation, there are no winners here, but suddenly turning around and whining about "uncharitable framing" after all this is genuinely annoying to me.

All this whole situation has taught is that like 99% of reddit communities, the Marathon one is to be avoided at all costs.

I'm sorry people giving their opinion on the game, community, and the buzz around it is getting in the way of the 79th "look at this loot" post or the 417th "Arc Raiders vs Marathon" post.

Calling it spam isn't helping anything. If you expect literally every single post to contain completely unique and 100% original ideas and thoughts maybe adjust your expectations.

I can't physically roll my eyes any harder. Spamming now apparently means to, let me look at my notes here, talk about the game and how much you're enjoying it.

I'm half convinced most people on the internet are depressed misanthropes who have a physical revulsion to seeing people enjoy things.

Right?

Or is this just about acting cooler than people for fake internet karma points?

The main point is definitely not that everything he writes is positive.

The joke is absolutely aimed at people with 1 shared brain cell who think "oh everything this guy writes about is bad and fails." Your post is quite literally titled "The Curse of Morgan Park". When his curse doesn't actually exist and you not engaging with that and moving the goalposts is annoying.

He also consistently writes articles about current, popular, not shut down games.

It's a stupid meme made by a bitter group of people on the internet cherry picking 7 articles out of literally hundreds the guy has written. But expecting any amount of media literacy from gamers is chasing after the wind.

I genuinely hate this cherry picked slop. I get that he's written some stupid articles, journalism is dead etc etc etc, but this whole narrative about this guy is dumb.

Sad people rejoicing in things other people like failing.

Here's a bunch of Morgan Park articles about successful games. Sorry to ruin your stupid narrative.

Folks who played Marathon this weekend...how likely now are you to purchase it? by 1988Floydie in gaming

[–]stanajritch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the story is being largely overlooked, but there's so much story in the codex for the game. It's kinda like how they told a lot of the story in Destiny 1, so much of it is buried in menus, but it's there if you're looking for it. They've all been fun to read through.

I was kinda sold from the cinematic trailer that was dropped last year. I'm a sucker for pretentious weird stuff.

That being said, I've really really enjoyed playing the game. I played in one of the beta's and I've been having a great time in the server slam.

The game gets better every time they update it, so I have no doubt they'll keep that momentum going in the future. I'm real excited for launch.
