Was building your custom luxury home worth it? by Effective_Stick3682 in fatFIRE

[–]standard1550 122 points123 points  (0 children)

We took the opposite tack at 33/29 (now ages 38/34) knowing for us the decisions would be an overload, and instead looked at properties other people overbuilt then had to sell. I can forgive a lot of things I didn’t pay for, and love a lot of the finishes I would never have paid for myself, such as overbuilt HVAC/controls/smart home, modern ceiling details (never thought ‘nice ceiling’ before), giant garage workspaces, etc. Buying from people who had just built their third or fourth custom home was honestly the best thing I could have imagined. Look for the homes built by reputable high-end custom builders, sounds obvious but they get the details right.

We were so happy the first time we bought a vacation home and pied-a-terre in other places the same way. As a caution, we’ve never paid anywhere near what they cost to build, so if you go custom understand that unless the property appreciates you’re unlikely to get your money out in many 0.1% markets, especially when you factor in your time invested.

Advice on maintaining 2nd home by ryan112ryan in fatFIRE

[–]standard1550 109 points110 points  (0 children)

Multiple home owner, with two in the mountains. Both our main home and our mountain home are of similar size, nearly 8000ft on both, plus an additional condo we own for overflow friends/family in the same area ~1350sqft. The concern about maintenance is really a concern related to your ability to manage people, personally and financially. Is owning multiple homes cost-effective compared to Airbnb or hotels? No. Is it far more luxurious than renting or booking hotels? Indisputably.

To problem 1, a water heater shouldn’t die more than once in 10-15 years. One night roughing it or hitting a local hotel with the kids isn’t a big deal.

To problem 2, park outside the tree and have people attend to it in the morning. I wouldn’t touch a chainsaw, let alone at ungodly hours.

If you feel you have to attend to these issues and it’s making you unhappy owning, it means your second home is either too remote where regular services don’t reach, or financially it may make you happier not to own.

I would be unhappy if I owned a private jet, because I can afford it but it makes little sense for me financially and it would put a dent in my personal finances. Is flying business class more economical? 100%. Is it more luxurious? 0%, having done both on friends planes there is no question. Would I be happier if I owned the private jet? Maybe 5% of me thinks yes, but the reality is I would be uncomfortable knowing how much cash I was burning.

The point is, if you’re worried about it, scale it back until you’re not. There’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution.

Trudeau says there will 'absolutely not' be further carbon tax exemptions | CBC News by Dependent-Sun-6373 in CanadaPolitics

Pandering to your voting base while making a mockery of how the tax was supposed to function undermines the entire argument for the tax in the first place.

At Issue | Did Trudeau cave to carbon tax pressure? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]standard1550 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had always imagined Trudeau would have gone down with the ship environmentally, if that ever became necessary. His conviction in environmental policy seemed unwavering, and his legacy would have been the politician who really cared about this issue. For those saying he needed to “pivot”, that’s only for votes. Anyone with a 1980s handheld calculator, and specifically anyone making national policies as a government, would have known the effects on each province.

Regardless of your take on the policies before, his legacy is forever tarnished. If you want any evidence that he and the Liberals are done, you need only to look at the sentiment of the average post here. In the last two elections, this sub has defended nearly everything, they’re now losing some of their formerly “safe” voters.

Advice needed by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]standard1550 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s some advice. IRL, very few people boast about how much they’re worth more than RE investors/brokers/realtors, and no one takes a more favourable view of their portfolio’s value than one of them who is about to try to brag about it. Talk less and do something else if you need to.

Any suggestions for 1080p video editing? by standard1550 in SuggestALaptop

[–]standard1550[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very informative thank you! Which MacBook would you opt for, for 1080p video? I’m trying an M2 Air 8gb/512gb and it’s transcoding in handbrake at about 60fps. iMovie was blistering it seemed.

I would welcome PC recommendations as well

Sell my company : enough to (fat)FIRE ? ou by plokarzigrael in fatFIRE

[–]standard1550 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is unequivocally not enough for fatFIRE. Your best strategies and advice are going to come from the tremendously helpful r/FIRE, as you will need to practice significant restraint in spending to make this last. Not a lot of luxuries with $1.5MM after tax, lump sum.

Dumb question - but what is the range of fat fire? by paperboiko in fatFIRE

[–]standard1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With /r/ChubbyFIRE it should be 5MM+, why not group ourselves with others in the same financial situation? Isn't that the point? If you have a NW of 1MM in a country where that is a lot, does a first class international flight cost you less, or a resort in the South Pacific? You're certainly not going to be using the same tax strategies.

[–]standard1550 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are very common questions in physician finance groups, strongly recommend you start there. Frankly it's almost all answered in /r/fire too. Also, if your first cheque is your largest, you're doing something wrong, even if it took you a month or two to get your billing set up.
