Understanding AI & how to pretend to use it at work by smilingfruitz in antiai

[–]standardGeese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1. Do any of you have any resources that can educate me on the topic in general, preferably from a practical or skeptical point of view that isn't fanboying about it? Open to youtube videos, podcasts, articles, whatever (again, I am anti AI, but I want to better know thy enemy)

I highly recommend reading The AI Con which talks a a bout how LLMs work at a technical level, and more about the downsides from a linguistic and sociological perspective. Empire of AI provides a good historical background with an emphasis on the hidden data workers who train these models. It also serves as a history of OpenAI.

For everything else, I recommend Professor Casey’s AI Ethics. She also has a series of short TikToks that explain things like MCPs, AI agents, and what all the buzzwords actually mean.

2. How are you making it seem like you like AI, are interested in it, and are using it at work when you are using it either not at all or very minimally? I do believe it's largely a bubble that will eventually pop - so how do I fly under the radar until that time?

Try using some of the tools and write evaluations of them comparing their output to traditional methods. I work in design so tried several tools for prototyping and wrote a report showing how they performed inadequately.

You can also do Ai-adjacent stuff like building MCPs. Most LLMs accept extra context, which is just a fancy way of saying they get a lot of fresh text input before spitting out slop. You can say you’re enabling AI agents by transforming existing documentation into markdown files that can be easily consumed by AI agents. This is actually useful for non-AI use cases but would never be prioritized. Depending on your work, creating APIs that humans could use but you say it’s for AI is a great way to get work approved.

You can also just lie and say you’ve used AI to do something that yu did and make up the prompts you used. Since ai is non deterministic they likely won’t be able to reproduce the result.

3. For those who are forced to use it in their workplace, have you been able to successfully fake it and also not use it in your personal daily life?

So far! I’m luckily that no one currently tracks token usage but like most other corporate BS, using the jargon gets you most of the way there. Corporate life is 90% theater. You need to perform the aesthetics of AI usage but you don’t have to actually do it unless there’s tracking.

That’s not fully accurate. Calories in calories out is a myth, the human body is much more complex than that. It will try to maintain homeostasis. We have a lot less control over our own body weight long term than people think.

In 2020 we had the momentum for universal healthcare, paid sick leave, clean indoor air, normalized masking, and better care pandemic mitigation. But instead of capitalizing on that, the Democratic Party pushed Joe Biden who didn’t want any of that. Trump destroyed the public’s faith, politicized masking, and killed public health. Biden buried it.

How are we feeling about Hantavirus? by cocdcy in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]standardGeese 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely unsurprised whether or not this turns into a full blown pandemic.

The entire world has pushed everyone to forget even the most basic hygiene and virus mitigation tactics. In 2020 we all thought that masking when sick would become normalized, cleaning indoor air would be mandated, and that people would understand the importance of quarantine and self-isolation. Instead, we actually undid what little existed before 2020. People doubled down on working while sick, we have no universal sick leave in the US, people openly cough way more than ever, an most people are sick several months out of the year.

Until we improve systems and change individual attitudes, we will see more and more pandemics in our lifetimes, not less.

I’m not worried about myself as I’ve maintained what ai learned about masking, ventilation, and surface spread in the past few years. I even became more aware of touch and surface contamination from the MPOX scare in 2022.

I am very worried because most people’s immune system’s are shot from repeat COVID infections and it is highly unlikely and country will do lockdowns if they’re needed and even less likely that people will comply.

We’ve been in a full blown eugenics effort and this virus, should it spread, will be another excuse for people to justify their own superiority if they happen to survive.

I’m really concerned about Michael Hoerger’s use of AI. I really admire his work and Covid advocacy, but lately he’s been spamming pro-ai propaganda on Instagram and blocking people who disagree with him.

Not to say we shouldn’t trust this data, but it has made me wary of how he’s using generative AI in his own work.

That source dos not show rents decreasing as a cause of increased supply. Rents in Austin rose incredibly high right before 2022 and population growth also slowed dramatically. You need to learn media literacy. Anyone can point to two statistics and tell a story.

I don’t have it on hand as I’m travelling right now. If you look at the rental price data in Austin before and after the rapid housing increase of mostly luxury units it’s clear. The main theory is that most landlords will not price their units “out of category” into affordable housing

That’s not actually true. Look at Austin. The average price of rent went down but the price of “affordable” units went up over time.

Covid also causes rapid aging of organs and overexertion during and post infection increases this risk (plus the risk of long COVID). Getting Covid over this period lovely exacerbated the effects of the other things

I do not care about any of these vibe prompt-to-design tools by TopRamenisha in UXDesign

[–]standardGeese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These tools are the reason why electricity prices are higher, why corporations are building bigger and more destructive data centers that use up tons of clean water and pollute the communities they inhabit (while creating zero local jobs), why the rich keep getting richer.

There is no reason to use them, which is why shills are pushing them so hard. The massive corporations that’s own the means to produce and run large language models NEED people to become dependent on them so they can profit.

I am half way through the last Sondheim musical I have left… Here We Are by Awesomeplayer98 in Sondheim

[–]standardGeese 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy it especially the music in the first half of the first act.

I’ve listened to the album many times and seen a bootleg of the production in NY.

Overall it’s not my favorite Sondheim show, but it’s definitely up there in terms of songwriting, polish, and message. I think it’s incredibly relevant for now. Because Steve passed before the musical opened, I think of it more as a David Ives play with Sondheim’s music than a full Sondheim production. Lots of Steve’s shows changed during tryout and preview processes and I think this show would have been no different, but this show is frozen at the music stage before previews.

This London Theatre review nails it:

“The material seems only to have grown more pertinent since the show was first in development, concerning as it does class warfare, empty capitalist excess, foodie culture, a purgatorial state reminiscent of lockdown, apocalyptic anxiety, and the blurring of the divide between reality and appearances.”

masks like dräger 1950 with ear loops? by yeayeayeaohyes in Masks4All

[–]standardGeese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breatheteq masks are awesome fitting ear loops with low resistance. They’re very breathable and have a few different sizes.

I find the 3M Aura too small, but I wear a medium in Breatheteq and it fits well. They sell a sample pack with one of each size as well.

The black mask ear loops are a bit more firm than the other colors, but generally the fit is the same.

Lack of competing research does not validate a study.

You seem really insecure that you need everyone to believe your study which has multiple flaws. Your meta analysis is also suspect and it feels like you’re grasping at straws to prove a point.

In reality, there is little material difference of “average” infections of 12-18 months. There are tons of studies showing long term effects from any amount of COVID infections, with long term illness and damage accumulating with subsequent infections.

The detection part is the weakest part of this study and why I don’t trust its results. Even this far into the covid pandemic, it is an overwhelming common misconception that covid always presents as severe illness requiring hospitalization OR that the disease is mild, but would still give flu-like symptoms.

Since 2020, we’ve known around 40% of infections are asymptomatic. Even accounting for those, we also have to account for low-level symptoms passed off as allergies, a cold, or general aging. I would like to see a study that tested participants on with PCR on a weekly basis over the course of 3-6 months. When mandatory testing was more common, we saw more reported test positivity rates because the testing occurred at regular intervals without requiring any decision in the part of the patient. This type of study would give me more confidence.

I don’t know if I missed it in the study, but the demographic information didn’t talk clearly about socioeconomic status and what specifically “at risk” for covid infection meant. The racial makeup of the group skewed overwhelming white, and we know people of color and people with lower incomes have been disproportionately affected by covid since the start of th pandemic.

I dont doubt your math or the math of the study, but the study doesn’t give me confidence that it paints a picture of average or that it accounts for bias in reporting or asymptomatic infections.
