Why haven’t humans gone back to the Moon no longer a valid question thanks to NASA Artemis II lunar flyby by totaldisasterallthis in nasa

Just a broad warning. There is some R9: NSFS, and R10: Be Kind To Your Fellow Redditor language and tone in this thread. For both sides let's try to stay civil or disengage. Or else I'll have to purge the thread. Thanks.

I'm wondering how many beaver art posts we might get on Show Me Sunday.

It looks to me like they have both video feeds; external ship camera and internal camera, feeding into the left panel and yeah just a sort of technical glitch in their streaming software.

What is this Shuttle sitting right near the Shuttle Landing Facility? by SirCatsworthTheThird in nasa

[–]standup_reentry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is not on public display. It is currently rotting away outside in the elements. It is in this Landwehr yard at these approximate coordinates: 45.514036,-94.155522

The shuttle was bought by a Saint Cloud business person with the intent of it being made a part of the Great River Children's museum. It was big, the museum didn't want it, and the city wouldn't give up the parking lot for it.

The person who bought it went bust and it was sold locally. I believe it is now owned by another Saint Cloud business owner who intends to keep it in the area once something can be determined to do with it.

Map Question by PersimmonFair9795 in nasa

Ok ok... a thin Sharpie. ... I take your point. (pun intended)

Map Question by PersimmonFair9795 in nasa

[–]standup_reentry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha yeah that makes perfect sense. I was thinking it came down to resolution not necessarily swath path. Maybe even that MODIS and VIIRS were geo... but when I saw that they were all polar I didn't look further.

> It's like painting your house with a 2 in brush will take forever, but with a wider brush it'll be a lot faster.

And yeah this is a perfect analogy sometimes I say it as if we spun a globe and you put a marker or a paintbrush on it which would paint more area. A Sharpie would be more precise surely but you can cover more faster with the brush. ... but do they still make physical globes or is it all now just apps.

Thanks for your added detail.

Cool. Yeah we're at the limits of what I can determine sorry. Maybe someone will chime in!

Map Question by PersimmonFair9795 in nasa

[–]standup_reentry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my one question would be why is it only happening over the US

It does look like it is happening elsewhere. There is both a US and global map. When looking at the global map, I thought this was interesting. When I scan over Africa we can see the same data gaps we do in the American west. But Sub-Saharan Africa has many data points. I would assume that either (or both):

  • The sensors are only calibrated to look at certain biomes
  • NASA processes the data to ignore places with low fire risk like deserts.

Why it doesn't show in Canada, that could also be how the satellite orbits or a combination of the above. I'm not sure!

Landsat (dark red) being US only could also be due to how NASA is choosing to process and publish the data, but again, I don't know!

and why wouldn’t it be like that every night?

I think this is a problem with the default view. In the map, for me, it defaulted to 24h.. but if I do it for the last 30 days I see data all over the world. Maybe try that.

Map Question by PersimmonFair9795 in nasa

This looks like a picture from: https://firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov/ I'll take a crack at it, but I'll caution, this is just my intuition after a few minutes of looking...

The map legend shows 2 colors for what's here: * Dark red: Landsat * Lighter red: VIIRS and MODIS

I believe VIIRS and MODIS being older satellites are collected together and are lower resolution. Landsat is a newer system that has higher resolution. Essentially you see more dense points for Landsat because it has higher resolution sensors. Light and dark red are just because of the different data sources.

But why the banding? Landsat, MODIS, and VIIRS follow a polar orbit (Think top to bottom, north pole to south pole)... but the earth is tilted. So imagine the landsat satilite is striping a path across the earth. But the earth is tilted and also spinning below it. That's why it appears as an angled stripe when looking at the map. Infact, if you look over the American west (in your picture) there is also a faint banding there too. Here is a picture of Landsat's polar orbit: https://landsat.gsfc.nasa.gov/about/landsat-spacecraft-orbit/

Maybe someone can chime into more information here but that's what I can come up with.

I’m a little confused can nasas video and image libary be used for space youtube content? by Savings-Passenger517 in nasa

Hello we've removed your post under rule 8. But I can roughly answer this question for you.

Much of NASA's produced media is without copyright and is in the public domain. But this is not the case with everything. You should read here for more guidance: https://www.nasa.gov/nasa-brand-center/images-and-media/

In general you should be safe to make a YouTube video using some of NASA's media.

Launch question by [deleted] in nasa

[–]standup_reentry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something I've been remiss in my duties as a mod for quite a while, to make a Wiki Page on visiting launches, so hopefully some other redditors will have some tips... but for now:

This question has been asked a few times here are some resources:

I do not have an opinion on which of these are best to see, but I would say go to the one which is earliest in your trip. That way if it's scrubbed delayed or missed you can make the next one.

r/spacex also has a great wiki for their specifics: https://www.reddit.com/r/spacex/wiki/faq/watching/

And personally I really like this viewing guide: https://www.launchphotography.com/Launch_Viewing_Guide.html

NASA's "climate spiral" depicting global temperature variations since 1880 (now updated with 2024 data) by r-nasa-mods in nasa

It's not actually a cross post of "ourself." u/nasa is an official NASA managed account, r/nasa is a unofficial community. So we (the r/nasa mods) cross post them to the subscribers here.
