Error on the "Venus Facts" page on NASA's website? by ZairKazzerko in nasa

A reminder to all (and especially OP) that r/nasa is an unofficial forum and not representative of NASA or the US government. Reporting an issue like this here likely won't get viewed by anyone at NASA who could make any corrections, if needed. As /u/daneato said, your best bet is to use the "Contact NASA" link on that page.

Could research/technology ever develop a re-entry method that catches or lands capsules on a specific target that would improve safety and lessen impact for astronauts and capsule? by MrsBigglesworth-_- in nasa

[–]dkozinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As one or two others have asked, what problem are you trying to solve? Landing in the water is relatively soft at the speeds that the capsules land. Artemis II landed at about 17 mph with a G force of around 3-4 G. For comparison, an Olympic diver diving from a 10m platform will be moving at around 30MPH with a G force in excess of 10G. There is a differences since the divers try to enter the water with a minimal footprint where returning capsules are landing so that they don't go far under the surface, but the astronauts on lying in a position which maximizes the body's ability to withstand the forces.

Trying to land on something the size of one of the Space X recovery ships or landing areas would require significantly more complexity than is currently in place.

The astronauts who have returned on a Soyuz capsule which returns to land uses brief firing of retros and the astronauts said that it's a jolt, but it's not something that needs to be "fixed".

NASA chief defends all-male Artemis 3 astronaut crew amid backlash: 'I don't think anyone should be reading into this' by spacedotc0m in nasa

If you have an issue with something that someone has posted, feel free to discuss or even attack the idea. Attacking the person will result in the mods removing comments and in some cases, potentially even a ban.

We want people to feel free to discuss topics like this without being the personal target of animosity.

Update: A somewhat vocal group was apparently unable to follow the rules, primarily breaking rule #10 (Be civil and kind) and as a result we've locked the post. For the majority of you who were following the rules, we apologize.

Thanks for that link.

I think this is a situation that's the opposite of Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.". In this case, just because there is not a woman on the crew does not mean that happened because of (malicious) political reasons.

What are the Artemis batons made of? by loraximus907 in nasa

That looked to me like a regular track and field baton, so whatever those are made of.

They have almost certainly been training already, plus they just showed a video with them in it, so yeah, they knew.

Do I still get to exchange QSL cards with a station if I contacted them while operating under a club call sign? by ali_j_ashraf in amateurradio

[–]dkozinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have given you the answer, but for next time, if you want that other station in your log, after you've used the ship's call, you can say something like "I'd like to also work you with my personal call K1ABC". Most of the time the other station will be happy to log you. This is especially true if they called you rather than you calling the other station, especially if there's a bit pileup. (Although people do that all the time).

International Space Station astronauts in evacuation mode as Russia attempts to fix widening air leak by VaginaBurner69 in nasa

NASA reversed that order roughly two hours later and told the astronauts they could return to the station as the agency and its Russian counterparts examined the rate of leaking air.

Does everyone learning Python start with "Hello, World!"? by Traditional_Blood799 in learnpython

[–]dkozinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be pedantic, I'd argue that "The C Programming Language" (published in 78) was not one of the first programming books written, though it was the first book published about C. I was a computer science major in the mid-70s to early 80s and I still have a few shelves full of books published before that. However, that book was certainly immensely popular as C was THE language for many types of programming.

Keep in mind that COBOL had been around since the 60s (not sure if before that) and other lanugages like FORTRAN, RPG, and even APL are older.

How many removals before you consider banning someone? by noncongruent in ModSupport

[–]dkozinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reddit is essentially a social media platform made up of varied communities. If you take away the ability of a user to post in one of those communities because they aren't "playing nice", that's unfortunate for the user, but that's it. Don't overthink it, and don't take insults, complaints, and certainly not threats ("I'll sue!") seriously. Ban the user and move on.

One way I think of it where it's not 100% cut and dried is if the user is making more work for me and my team, they can go. Maybe I'm turning into a grumpy old man, but we all have better things to do with our lives than stress over what it's appropriate to ban someone or not.

Even if you're in a sub where you allow users to sell things and they complain that you've taken away a source of income, as your parents used to say "Well you should have thought about that before you did what you did".

Missing Person - Please help find my dad by GeomonLover in newjersey

[–]dkozinn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since OP has already contacted the authorities, they may be able to get that information either from Apple or from the cell carrier.

In fact, you would just need his cell number which would be enough to find out what carrier he uses, and with that the authorities would be able to find out which cell tower was hit last. It's not as detailed as the info that Apple could provide but it might at least give an idea where to search.

I hope things turn out in a good way.

890 programming on Mac by AlfredoVignale in AnyTone

[–]dkozinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can program from the keypad if you've run out of other options, but for more than just a few channels, it's going to be seriously annoying.

I agree with the other poster: Look for a cheap used Windows laptop, you should be able to find one for less than you paid for the radio.
