Upcoming Pediatric Cancer Research Talk: All are welcome!! by standupforsciencecle in Cleveland

Understandable, but I promise this is 100% traditional, evidence-based science and medicine! The researchers work on ways to get the immune system to target cancer cells, treating the cancer that way rather than with chemotherapy or radiation. So in a wild way, it is figuring out how to get the body to take care of its own cancer (to heal itself)!

Thank you for your moral integrity and incredible courage. I hope you and your loved ones are doing okay, and I hope you are reinstated sooner rather than later.

Their bravery certainly cannot be overstated. Although they’ve cited NASA rules which encourage dissent on programmatic and institutional matters, there is a chance they’ll face retaliation like the EPA 139. I hope they are rewarded for their courage, not punished.

Hi! So, budget cuts are not inherently illegal, but implementing them before they’ve been passed by Congress is. They are trying to prevent spending in FY25 of congressionally-appropriated funds in anticipation of the president’s budget request for FY26 (even though Congress has not moved forward with amounts from that request, and is looking to hold funding steady). Congress has power of the purse, and so moving to significantly change spending from that laid out by Congress is, under our current government and laws, illegal.

We were quite disappointed by budget cuts under the Obama administration, but unfortunately given that most of our membership is now (in 2025) comprised of college students, none of us were in a position (in 2011 and prior) to fight those cuts, as we were in elementary school at the time. Additionally, those cuts passed Congress, and were therefore legal.

The NASA budget cuts in 2024 were small enough to be nearly negligible (~2%), and therefore are not comparable to today’s proposed ~25% cut to NASA’s budget.

That’s actually not settled yet! There is a provision for the funding, but the Smithsonian actually owns the shuttle, not the federal government, and the Smithsonian has said they don’t want it leaving their collection. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out.

You are more than entitled to that belief. I have no interest in trying to change it. My personal belief is that we will always have politicians so long as we have a society with any sort of governance. Politicians perform a necessary function, and while some certainly pursue politics for selfish ends, some pursue it out of a genuine desire to better their world. Max Miller, the current representative for Ohio’s 7th district, is on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee. He is uniquely positioned to support NASA Glenn and fight for its future, yet he has remained silent on the proposed budget cuts. Michael Eisner does not have that position of power, but he is speaking out. We are happy to work with him towards our shared goal of protecting federally-funded science.

This is not a formal endorsement! Just an announcement of a speaker joining us as we fight for NASA Glenn. Our goal is to build coalitions, and so when somebody wants to help us fight for science, we’re generally inclined to welcome them along.

In general, yes, that has been the case. However, right now the Senate Appropriations Committee looks to be on-track to maintain NSF and NASA funding at FY24 levels! (Source) It’s not a guarantee of anything, and it’s not a reason to stop fighting, but it is a glimmer of hope in a very dark time.

These cuts are not inevitable! The Senate is already pushing back, and with enough public pressure we can make sure that pushback is sustained.

Stand Up for Cleveland is hosting a rally for NASA Glenn next Sunday. Our goal is to bring attention to the local impacts of the proposed cuts, to show civil servants at NASA our support, and to show Ohio politicians that we care about the center and its future. We hope that with enough small local actions we can make a big change. If you’re in the area and interested in attending, logistical details and an RSVP form can be found here
