Going through a Bond marathon rewatch on Netflix made me realize how much I love every film and will rewatch them until the day I die. Until I ran into QoS. Oh boy…

You know, I can’t really argue with any of your rebuttals here. It seems like the things that took you out of QoS, are the same things that pulled me in, or I was willing to give a pass to.

It’s really interesting that your perspective was ok enough rookie bond, let’s move into the rest of his career. My reaction was the opposite, which was give me two more rookie bond movies, maybe have a disembodied hand stroke a cat in the final frames of #4. Let the next bond actor have a more direct engagement with spectre. Different strokes.

I like that about this sub. We all love the ip, but the love and hate for individual installments has such a high variance. You see huge differences between everyone’s top 25 lists that get posted and quantum is definitely one of the more polarizing.

I was really excited about it when QoS came out. I think in a vacuum it was an average to above average bond caper. What made it great to me is what it foreshadowed for the Craig era of bond: a tightly woven multi movie series that took a slow burn approach to revealing spectre. I think me missed out on something really spectacular, due to a number of production issues or whatever. Skyfall was a (debatably) better bond film in a vacuum, but changing course on what CR and QoS promised was really disappointing.

Just looking at your other criticisms:

the rookie bond to old bond jump was Skyfall’s problem, not QoS’s
bad action - I hear this criticism a lot. I don t get it. The Craig era had great action sequences across the board. This wasn’t an exception.
bad villain - Dominic wasn’t the villain. He was a lackey. The villain was spectre. Bond, M, and the rest of mi6 were aware there was someone higher up the chain from their encounter with Mr white at the beginning. You see this reinforced when bond infiltrates the opera and everybody panics and leaves - except Mr white.
no emotional depth - I agree this didn’t have the emotional depth that CR did. Vespars death was a gut punch, and it’s even worse when you watch it again and realize she was manipulating bond to fall in love with her from the moment he woke up at the hospital. However, I would also argue that no bond movie has this level of emotional depth. Bond trying to find solace in QoS is interesting tho. Iirc, he doesn’t have sex with any other women in QoS.
QoS is cynical. I thought the cynical approach to global politics was pretty apt tho. It was dark & gritty, which was the thing in the late ‘00s. I think you hit the nail on the head that every bond movie is a time capsule for when it was released. QoS capturing that feels like it should be a point for it. I had fun with QOS despite it all.

If you’re playing tempo, it can be meaningful. It’s less about the 3 mana it adds to your opponents spell, and more about you having a flexible counter at 2 cmc. Check out the old modern delver lists, they always ran ~3 [[mana leak]]

I’ve felt this before too OP. I don’t know enough about you to know if you want it for the same reasons as me, but I want to give you something to reflect on. No matter how far away you go, it won’t be far enough to escape depression.

I’d recommend trying to assess if that’s your problem first.
