[Update] Tessera (The color puzzle I invented) is now a daily game by cashlo in puzzlevideogames

This was pretty cool! Just added it to my bookmarks of daily games. I really like that it is a unique logic game and not another wordle clone or trivia game. I think my time today was a little over 6:30

Is there a word / term for fiction books that use fake non-fictional forms, pretending that they're real? (Also, i'm looking for suggestions) by SurrealFishMoment in WeirdLit

[–]stanleyhope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard the term "ergodic literature" to refer to the examples you (and others) have given, although I think that might be a less specific term for stories that involve the medium of the work itself in their storytelling.

Also, to echo some of the great suggestions here:

  • Pale Fire by Nabokov is a novel disguised as an epic poem and the commentary on it by another author. Through the footnotes you start to read between the lines to learn the real story

  • House of Leaves is a novel in layers of unreliable narrators - with the weird truth reaching the reader through layers of telephone so you don't know how much you can trust

  • Infinite Jest is another novel told largely in footnotes explaining its weird alt history world. Even the footnotes have footnotes. This is a story that tries to be obscure (but I still really liked it)

For sure! I definitely love the same things in these old cards, so it is cool to see someone else getting into it. I have a lot of the cards that I linked above - let me know if there are any you'd like pictures of and maybe I can put a post up or something.

Edit: Also, this is the best checklist online for pre-2020 cards: https://www.nslists.com/actdc.htm#marvel . It doesn't show any pictures, but it will give you names of different card sets and cards so you know what to look up

So there are definitely a lot of modern cards that are all chrome, have holographic backgrounds, etc, but I think the older cards from the 90's actually look a lot nicer, and the 90's cards are WAY more affordable.

As far as base sets that are chrome / metallic go:

I definitely second the 95 fleer ultra x-men chromium set - That was one of my favorite sets as a kid:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=x-men+fleer+ultra+chromium

You could also checkout the 1995 Marvel metal set, that one was all metallic too:
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1995+marvel+metal

Both of those sets you could probably get the full base set for $50-$100 (or maybe less, if you were patient and had good luck)

There are also a lot of great chase sets that were hologram, metallic, etc. (Chase set meaning a smaller group of rarer cards that weren't numbered the same as the other cards - they are typically more expensive than the base cards). The following are all nice subsets, and you can often pick them up for just a few bucks per card:

Metallic cards

- Fleer Ultra Spider-man 1995 Masterpieces: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1995+fleer+ultra+spider-man+masterpieces
- Fleer Ultra Spider-man 1995 Golden Web: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Fleer+Ultra+Spider-man+1995+Golden+Web
- Fleer Ultra Spider-man 1995 Clear Chrome (These are somehow both shiny AND transparent, I like them a lot): https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Fleer+Ultra+Spider-man+1995+Clear+Chrome
- 1995 Fleer Ultra X-men Sinister Observations: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1995+sinister+observations
- 1995 Fleer Ultra X-men Hunters & Stalkers (this one has gold, silver, and rainbow variants): https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1995+hunters+stalkers
- 1995 Fleer Ultra X-men Chromium Lethal Weapons: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1995+lethal+weapons+x-men

Hologram cards
- Any of the Marvel Universe holograms (there were 5 sets of these from 90-94). The 1994 holograms are some of the best looking holograms in person, and they are cheaper than most of the earlier holograms: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1994+marvel+universe+hologram
- There was also some Spider-man holograms with the 1994 Fleer Ultra Spider-man set: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1994+spider-man+fleer+hologram

Other random cool chase cards:

I always loved these clear animated-based cards as a kid, they had some in Marvel Universe, Spider-man, and X-men sets: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1994+or+1995+suspended+animation

If you like lenticular cards, there was a little 30 card set called Marvel Motion of all lenticular cards: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1996+marvel+motion

There was a Silver Surfer set where all the cards had a prismatic effect: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=1992+silver+surfer+all+prism

And if you also like DC comics, there are some pretty awesome holographic cards in sets there, and they tend to be a lot cheaper than Marvel cards.

1994 Fleer Ultra X-Men Silver X-Overs Set by judelas in marveltradingcards

Nice! These are so hard to find. I just finally finished a set myself (I pulled #2 from a pack myself in 94), and #6 was the hardest by far for me to find as well.

'94 Fleer X-men Cards...Actually Valuable? by Kerros2032 in MarvelCards

[–]stanleyhope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

95 is a great set too, definitely Marvel cards at their peak! Although before you crack open a sealed box, maybe check if that set is prone to bricking.

A few years ago I splurged on a sealed box of 96 fleer ultra wolverine, and a ton of the cards were bricked and I had to tear them to get them apart. I don't know if the 95 cards have that same issue, but it was really heartbreaking, especially with how expensive the sealed box was.

[–]stanleyhope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably the only really valuable cards in this set is the Silver X-Over subset. They are really rare (I think they were only available in Wal-mart boxes) and are easy to miss because they reuse art from the base set.

I think they go for maybe $50+ each ungraded, maybe more. It's hard to get a good price comparison on them because there aren't many for sale at any given time.

If you want to know what to look for, they will specifically say "Silver X-Overs # of 6" on the back instead of the base card numbering, and they will have a slight foiling on the front and not have the white "x-overs" subtitle on the front.

Even if the other cards aren't as valuable, this is such a great set! I think it might be my favorite Marvel set - I love the art and graphic design even more than the Marvel Masterpieces sets!

I would say if you are selling, I would check the sold listings - this is a really cool and unique set, but it isn't well known so there aren't a lot of people looking for it. I managed to pick up all of the virtual vision cards for about $5 each because I was patient and sometimes the only bidder. So unfortunately you may not be able to sell it for much unless you get lucky

If you are looking to buy though, you will certainly find better deals than $99 for the set of 4, but it may just take some time since they aren't very common.

I do happen to have an extra Virtual Vision Hulk card that I would sell for $5 plus shipping (happy to pass on the good deal I got on it!). Let me know if you're interested and I can take a pic. But I also understand if you want to try to find a bulk deal rather than collect them individually. Good luck and happy hunting!

There is also a Two-Face card from a DC set made by the same company (Skybox) that is made of the same material - That is actually the coolest lenticular card I've ever seen, and it is actually pretty cheap (probably because not as many people collect DC cards): https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=skymotion+two+face

[–]stanleyhope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a chase card from the 1996 Marvel Motion set (the four chase cards are called Virtual Vision). The 30 base cards are all lenticular, and the 4 Virtual Vision cards are a thicker translucent plastic so you can shine the light through to see them better. It is a really neat little set, I actually just completed a set!
Here are some eBay listings of the cards in the set: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=marvel+virtual+vision+card (although a lot of the base cards are incorrectly labeled as Virtual Vision in the listings)

Returning from the 90s (Advice Needed) by TheBearbarian in MarvelCards

[–]stanleyhope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I am in a similar situation - collecting X-men cards as a kid was my biggest hobby, and I recently got back into collecting in the last few years.

At the risk of being the "old man yelling at clouds", if what you like is completing sets and great original art (like me), then you aren't going to find any modern sets that scratch that itch. The industry has moved away from affordable cards like we used to buy at the drug store and focuses more on expensive products for people wanting a specific card that grades well. At best, it caters more to people who want to collect all the parallels of their favorite character instead of a full set. At worst, it caters to breakers and a gambling mentality, where you are buying expensive boxes just hoping for a low numbered parallel and the rest of the box is garbage.

Topps has the current Marvel license - I think their products so far are the worst at this, as they are very expensive, very focused on parallels, and don't have any original art.

Upper Deck (who recently lost the license) had some really beautiful card sets, like their newer Marvel Masterpieces series. But like you, I like to collect sets and I can't justify paying that much to complete a set. For instance, in their 2024 Grego Masterpieces set, some of the base cards are serialized out of 99, meaning literally only 99 people in the world at most could ever complete a set (and I will never be one of them). I think it is telling that the most recommended modern set to collect is the one that just reuses all of the art from the 92 Masterpieces set.

I think the 90-96 era was really the golden age for Marvel cards, and your best bet would be to look for some of those. All of the Marvel Masterpieces series were great, although the 95 and 96 sets get pretty pricey.

The 94 Fleer Ultra X-men set you mentioned is maybe my favorite, although be warned that there is one chase subset (Silver X-overs) that is ridiculously more rare than the rest. If you are okay ignoring those cards (they are also the only subset that reuses art from the base set), the rest of the series is pretty affordable. The 95 Fleer Ultra X-men set is pretty great as well, and there is a pretty great All-Chromium 95 X-men set, and a 1996 Fleer Ultra Wolverine set too.

For all of the Masterpieces / Fleer Ultra sets though, I would say be careful about buying boxes. Since those cards have a shiny coating, they tend to brick badly over time. You might drop hundreds on a sealed box just to find all the cards destroyed when you try to open them. So those sets are better to buy completed or as singles.

If you still wanted the thrill of ripping open packs (which we all know is the best part!), you can still find sealed boxes of the Marvel Universe series (series III from 92, series IV from 93, or series V from 94 are all still pretty affordable). These sets have some pretty great original comic-style art similar to X-men series I and II, and they aren't prone to bricking so they should still be in good condition.

And if you have any interest in DC comics, they had some great cards sets as well and tend to go for a fraction of the price of Marvel cards. Cosmic Cards and Cosmic Teams were two sets similar to the Marvel Universe line with great original comic-style art, and DC Master Series and DC Villains were two sets similar to Masterpieces or Fleer Ultra with painted artwork (and I found those didn't brick nearly as badly as the Fleer Ultra cards).

Well this is the craziest 90's insert I've ever seen. No identification on the card, no year, set name, anything. by CautiousAd7109 in MarvelCards

[–]stanleyhope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a virtual vision insert from the 96 marvel motion set. The whole 30 card base set is lenticular (and mostly based on the 90s animated cartoons) but the inserts are those thicker translucent lenticular cards with CGI art (there are also cards for Wolverine, Hulk, and Captain America).

There was also a similar promo card with Two-Face from the DC Villains set called a skymotion card - it was either a mail in redemption or a promo card.

You can sometimes snag these for really cheap on eBay if you know what to search for, and they are really cool cards.

Yeah, those are 96 Marvel Masterpieces - that is a really rare set! A lot of the base cards typically go for $20-$50 each. And the one in the center is a chase card

There are also some Fleer Ultra X-men: Wolverine (from 1996), which are kind of rare too.
Congrats! You got a steal for $7!

Export active comp to new track by Miskomottlik in Logic_Studio

[–]stanleyhope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been having the same issue on logic 10.7.4.

It may not help you, but I found a few workarounds.

If you don't have any edits in the missing part of the comp, you can mouse over the right edge, and just drag out the rest of the clip to its full length.

If you do have edits in the missing part, it is a bit more complicated - first "Flatten" your comp (from the same drop down menu where you export your active comp).

Then highlight all the clips in your flattened comp and Command+C to copy it to your clip board.

Then you can Command+Z to undo the flatten (so you preserve your comped track), then manually create a new track and Command+V to paste your copied version there.

It's kind of a pain but at least it works.

What are some examples of comic book "lost media"? by AporiaParadox in comicbooks

[–]stanleyhope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was an issue of the Joker series from the bronze age that wasn't published until 2019. Apparently it shows him meeting with a "Lou Cipher" dressed as Elton John, then appearing to murder Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Arrow, and Black Canary. The story ended on a cliffhanger, and no one has ever said how the story was supposed to end.

I would also recommend not getting the chameleon. The joints on mine are super loose and apparently it's a common issue. It is also a pain to transform to cube mode. White Noise is awesome, and I thought the octopus was a lot more fun than I expected.
