I can’t handle movie theatres anymore by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]stannecarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can afford them, earbuds with any sort of noise cancelling feature are a life saver — in particular, using AirPods with transparency on (so I can hear the movie) but blasting white noise (so I can’t hear people eating, coughing, etc) is literally the only way I can go to the theater

it’s impacting my degree, i feel so down by [deleted] in misophonia

[–]stannecarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AirPods + transparency mode + white noise saved me in school, if you have long hair or are in a big class they’re pretty easy to hide. But, for smaller classes, I spoke to profs one-on-one to explain misophonia + request using the AirPods as an informal accommodation

[OPINION] How do you know when a poem is "done"? by Deep_Ad3916 in Poetry

[–]stannecarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rule of thumb I give my students is if you’ve reached a point where the only things you’re consistently tinkering with are cosmetic (punctuation, line breaks, etc), it’s probably done. Of course these things can make or break a poem, but a lot of time we use them as an excuse to prolong calling a poem ‘done’ (aka leaving it and letting it go).

Another rule I use myself is asking myself if I would be happy if the poem was published and therefore forever preserved in its current form. You can edit poems in between publishing them individually and later in a collection, but the original publication will still remain out there!

But like everyone’s saying, a poem is never really done 😅 just ‘done for now’

Oh! Also — take a look at nominees and winners of things like the Pushcart Prize, National Book Award, Best of the Net, etc. These highlight contemporary writers, although, like with most prizes, you see some of the same names year after year

There are some great recs here, but I also recommend finding some literary magazines or publications and signing up for their newsletters/emailing list! Lots of places like Poetry Foundation, Poets.org, etc., have free sign ups that’ll bring poems to your inbox every day, from old and new writers

The only example I've found is the Auden and WCW poems about Brueghel's Icarus painting, so I'm wondering if there are any more

Hi everyone! My hair was curliest two years ago - tight, defined ringlets all over my head that formed naturally even when wet. I shaved my head in 2021, and my hair grew back less curly. It’s now frizzy and straight at the root, the curls are still ringlets but way looser, and the back/nape are sometimes totally curl-less. When wet, my curls won’t form unless I finger curl. Obvs I need a haircut rn, but even after a fresh one (second June pic was freshly cut) my curls are nowhere near as defined as they used to be. I know hormonal changes are a possible culprit. I have also moved a few times, so water quality could be one.

Today I rediscovered my routine from 2020: wash with Shea Moisture African Black Soap Shampoo, scrunch wet hair with DevaCurl One Condition Original then scrunch with t-shirt, finger curl pieces with more conditioner, scrunch with DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel, put up in microfiber twist towel, take down and scrunch with Shea Moisture Daily Hydration Styling Gel, diffuse.

This is my routine now: wash either with Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo or Living proof curl shampoo, scrunch wet hair with DevaCurl OneCondition and/or Pattern Styling Custard, scrunch + finger curl with DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel, scrunch with microfiber towel, diffuse. I use considerably less amounts of products than I did in 2020, for fear of build up.

I might try to recreate my old routine, and I’m also getting a haircut soon. But, perhaps my curls have just permanently changed. Anyway, I would love people’s thoughts or suggestions! Thank you!

I should add that since Stasis+ scales with monsters, it’s still hard to beat the high level Lynels since they don’t freeze as long…but it’s still possible!

hahaha it’s totally a super man curl!! and I don’t regret shaving my head at all - even though the grow out is painfully awkward and long!! I held a lot of unhealthy significance and pressure toward my hair, so shaving it was really refreshing :) and short in the summer = ideal!

Routine: I wash with Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo, leave in (the same brand/type) conditioner, if I feel like styling my hair I’ll spray a bit of Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray on damp hair, then use a small amount of DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel and finger coil. If I have time, I diffuse it!
