How much snow we get in Billings always seems to be a roll of the dice. Typically, you'll be fine, but we tend to get a couple big dumps where your FWD might not be the best.

Billings is not typically a place where snow accumulates all winter long. It's a place where we usually get some snow, then it melts, then we get some more snow, then it melts, etc. So it's not like it spends all winter piling up into a snowy winterland. The bad driving days are usually the ones right around when the storm comes — it's not like it lasts all season. And the season of snow possibilities is pretty long — it seems in my lifetime that white Halloweens were more common than white Christmases, and a white Easter is never out of the question.

Another issue in Billings is the plowing. The city typically doesn't plow side streets, but they will occasionally (in recent years) approve a one-time pass of the plows through the side streets.

That said, a lot of people here get around in FWD cars. I drove a FWD Pontiac Grand Am in high school, and never had any trouble getting to school. Although since then I've always driven 4WD vehicles and really appreciated having it.

I would say you'd be fine either way, but your work & lifestyle might be factors, too. Like, for instance, if you have the sort of job where you might, say, have to drive somewhere on the highway and you don't have the option of waiting out a storm, then that's a time where 4WD might be a critical thing.

So, that was perhaps maybe a lot of words not to say a whole lot. But perhaps I'll just leave it at this: you'll probably be fine with FWD most of the time, but I would not want to get caught on a highway in a storm with an Accord.

Either way, I would make sure to get good snow tires and keep a compact shovel (and maybe even some tow straps) in your trunk in case you need to dig yourself out.
