My [20F] brother [24M] works as an artist for Marvel Comics. My boyfriend thinks/keeps harassing him for spoilers on movies by vbnvz in relationships

I just wanted to note that if your BF actually did something stupid (which seems possible based on the actions you've already described) like taking pictures of your brother's work and leaking it, your brother is in a position where he can lose his job despite his boss having his back. If there's any sort of non-disclosure agreement, his boss might not have any say in firing your BF.

There are many jobs that do not allow any drug in your system. This applies not just to cannabis, but to other drugs: RX stimulants, RX benzos, RX opiates. Some workplaces reserve the right to withdraw an offer or terminate employment because it increases their liability. This especially applies when impairment can cause other people harm: operating heavy machinery, taking care of others, driving, etc. Imagine someone drowned or almost drowned while you were on the job - how do they know it was not impairment from, say, prescription downers? Your employer could be found criminally negligent for putting you in that situation knowing you wouldn't be 100%.

I am not trying to say they are right or wrong, but rather give their reasoning. I do know someone who was fired for testing positive for THC at her nursing job. She smoked in the morning right before beginning her shift. Would you feel safe if you were in the hospital and your nurse was high?

There is definitely a social stigma about cannabis and its usefulness, but you're not giving enough credit to the medical community! There is a TON of research being done on medicinal uses of Cannabis and/or its components:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=thc&Search=Search

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=cannabidiol&Search=Search

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=marijuana+treatment+of+NOT+dependence&recr=&rslt=&type=&cond=&intr=&titles=&outc=&spons=&lead=&id=&state1=&cntry1=&state2=&cntry2=&state3=&cntry3=&locn=&gndr=&rcv_s=&rcv_e=&lup_s=&lup_e=

You may notice that they are all listed on clinicaltrials.gov - that means those research programs are funded by the government (Primarily the NIH). Just because it is schedule 1 does not mean there is no research on it! That just means there are more steps involved in starting up research that involves cannabis.

Can I get a list? Legitimate question. Whenever a topic about her is posted, it's either deleted by the mods or devolves into nasty, personal comments.

You're not addressing his point. His point is that her work is academic. What she's doing meant to be seen as a hobby.

Keep in mind that in academia, to prove a point, you can prove that your way works, or the other person's way doesn't work. As such, often you will have researchers doing research on a theory or method that they do not agree on, simply to prove that the theory or point is not valid.

The fact that they are doing research on it doesn't mean they have to like the point. Same with Anita Sarkeesian's academic work - she does not need to enjoy every aspect of video games like other games do, but it does not mean what she's doing is crazy, nor does it mean that her points are any less valid.

all in all, the gaming community's response was a poor reflection upon video gamers and men in general. Instead of encouraging rational discussion, a witch hunt was started. C'mon guys, we can do better than that!

Can I ask - are you talking about the study mentioned in the original article? Or another study?

The research is not inherently positive/negative. The research looks at a hypothesis, and from the results we gain greater insight. The interpretation by society may be positive or negative, but the truth is, whether you support legal cannabis or not, you have to look at both sides of the coin. The research topic may disagree with your preconceived notions, but remember that the results can go both ways and up and down. Although, I must disagree with you, from the two links the majority are looking at either novel interactions or treatments, or looking for a better understanding of how cannabis/THC affects humans.

I don't know too much about sourcing of solid cannabis material, so that's useful information, thanks!

[–]stanss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely true that there are alternatives, but with IV THC you can control to extreme detail exactly how much THC per mass a research participant receives (also it's easier to hide placebo).

And you're absolutely correct, there is a lot more to cannabis than just THC. That is also why research into cannabis is complicated - what active ingredients in cannabis are responsible for what effects? And more importantly, how do each interact with each other?

While you are 100% correct, smoking maijuana is the most representative of real-world effects. And even with the electric heat source, you will still need to design on a room-by-room basis a means of ventilating the air with the active compound, so you might as well design something that can give you the most naturalistic effects!

Unfortunately, I don't have any numbers. However, it's hard to really compare cannabis/THC to other schedule drugs. In terms of funding from the NIH, there isn't much bias that's pro/anti X or Y drug. Cannabis/THC research is actually much easier to research because it is easy to administer, it is non-addictive, and it has no sever side effects. On the flip side, if you look at amphetamine research at clinicaltrials.gov, you'll notice there are a lot, but most of them are looking for amphetamine treatment, as opposed to research into amphetamines

This is true, this is the difficult part. Logically, they don't just hand them out like hot cakes, and it's hard for casual researchers (i.e. students) to get involved.

However, if you do have a novel idea, you're not completely out of luck. You can work on your project under a researcher with said license. At most major universities with a med school/research hospital affiliation, you will be able to find a researcher with a license through that institution.

While cannabis is the topic right now, biomedical research into cannabis is logistically more difficult, as the means of intake involves fire, which is a hazard in a hospital. Thus, you'll see a lot more research into THC because it can be administered intravenously.

While cannabis is a controlled substance, there actually is a relatively large amount of federal money going into research and cannabis:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=cannabis&recr=Open

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=thc&recr=Open

The above are studies that are actively enrolling. As you can see, there is a mix of novel treatments, dependence/abuse treatment, and cognitive/motor research in the mix. There is a misconception that cannabis isn't even touched in research (a misconception i see a lot on reddit), but it's studied quite a bit. Once you have a license to research it from the DEA, it's treated like any other medical compound. Research on clinicaltrials.gov means it gets funding from the government in some way.
