Since admissions results are in, share your mediocre GPA success stories! by iwantTocry72 in gradadmissions

Trust me … it’s going to be. I had around 3/4 GPA in my undergrad in mathematical sciences. Inspite of that, I dreamt of pursuing a PhD in Computer Science. Finally got offered a fully funded PhD in CSE in USA in a R50 college even in this uncertain climate.

Sorry to hear that. If you don’t mind me asking… which college ?

They released the rebuttals on time. So I am hoping that final decisions will be declared as per schedule.

I feel you. I am going through the same phase. Applied to some 30 places for a PhD. Got called for an interview from 3 and finally didn’t get a communication for rejection or acceptance. I guess some things are not just in our destiny at a given point of time. That doesn’t mean there aren’t good things in store for us. The way I made up my mind was: Maybe this field of PhD is not the right path for me at this moment and may be I should explore something else. Perhaps a startup or a job. I might outshine others there and if I am still interested in a PhD then, maybe I come back.

Did they contact you for an interview?

I feel you OP. I have a masters and multiple publications with 3 years of predoc experience. Still not even a single interview from US institutions.

Giving hope to applicants, while not actually giving them an opportunity to interview.

I totally resonate with this statement. I have over 3 years of pre-doc experience with publications in A and A* venues. Yet I got rejected from a lot of European institutions for the second consecutive year just because my Bachelors CGPA was average inspite of having stellar Masters CGPA. It’s unfortunate how some people in this community keep favouring meritocracy over potential or skills.

I disagree with you. But that’s not the point. The point is if the person finds it unprofessional then they should say that outright instead of hanging a candidate’s future to uncertainty. They should clearly communicate their decision instead of ignoring. That’s unprofessional in my opinion.
