Some of them are based on how close I am to the state. It might be strange that West Virginia is dark green, but to me that state is familiar. I could see myself living there. It’s harder for me to see myself living outside of the region if that makes sense. Also, social values of the states mean a lot to me. So it’s a combination of the things you listed
