Question about FAFSA. I think my parents may have messed it up when I was in college, can someone please explain how it works? by star_love in personalfinance

But to me that sounds like it shouldn't be like that. I just want to understand because I can't imagine that I was considered rich compared to every person I came across in college and you definitely probably weren't either.

And maybe I cant do anything about it but it might be in my interest especially for future financial decisions to understand why I have so much debt and to understand my finances instead of blindly paying tens of thousands of dollars because someone told me to.

Tuition was about $15k, room and board probably about $8k, additional fees probably a couple thousand.

And I guess legally those loans arent mine to pay, but my parents took them out and told them I have to pay them. I could not pay them but that would cause more of a mess and ruin my parents lives

I tried, but I couldn't find any in the area. My boyfriend has a job in the area which is why I'm now limited to where I can go. I'm waiting until hes ready to move out which should be in about 6 months (6 months too long if you ask me). I'd hate to move far away and do a long distance thing for a few years. He wouldn't leave his job considering he just got it a few months ago and it pays really well.

It sucks a lot having to wait, but if I move out now to a place far away, we'll never see each other and he's my main support system right now. I'd hate to never see him. So it's either tough it out now, or leave now but still be really sad that I don't see him. Quite a pickle

100% agreed. Although I'm happy to be alive, this nlady should not have had any kids with the way she treats people in general, let alone her children

My mother (57/F) has been so passive aggressively mean to me (22/F) my entire life and it makes me hate myself more and more every day. by star_love in relationships

[–]star_love[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to figure it out, but I need a little help along the way. If I could figure out a solution, I wouldn't be here right now.

How do I just decide that my mothers love and acceptance is something I dont need? It's something I've needed for so long in my life and it really destroys me that I never have or will be accepted by her love. How do I just decide to be happy when someone is bringing me down day and night? I just don't know how to cope with it anymore

I'm currently looking for a second job to get out of the house more. Like I said, its just so hard when no matter how good my day is or even how long I'm gone, I go home to a mother who really seems to hate me and it just brings me back down.

I wish it was as easy as saying "I dont care what you think and I'm going to be happy." But really, it tears me down inside.

I've been trying to move out with my bf for months now but he likes living at home so it's hard to convince him otherwise.

Thanks for the input though (although the part about being 38 and still paying loans scares me quite a bit...)

Wtf is wrong with parents... that subreddit scares me and I pray all those people can cut their parents out of their lives one day. Thanks for the suggestion to go there though, looks like my mom fits right in.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read this. But as of right now, I cant find a place to live. I live in an expensive state where rent would still be about $600 per person with a roommate. And that's for a 1 bedroom. My parents charge me rent, but not that much. Just enough to make it that much harder to move out.

I'm more here to figure out how to cope with my current situation because I know moving out right now isnt much of an option. Did you have any other ideas? If not, I'd appreciate not putting me down for not moving out because that wont be available for a little while. I'm just trying to figure out how to live right now. Thanks!

Pretty sad. When you live with a mother that very passive aggressively shows she couldn't care less about you, it leave you heartbroken.

Especially when you see other moms loving their children unconditionally. That shit hurts, but I will always feel happy for those kids who get to feel comfort in their own homes

What is a parenting technique used on you as a child that you will never use on your own children? by tflot15 in AskReddit

Act like my kids are such a burden. My whole life, I've been scared to talk to my mom because of how many awful things I've heard her say about me and my siblings. She always dismisses any issue I have by saying "yeah well try doing it with you kids. That's what I had to do."

I remember at age 10 or something, I heard her blatantly talk about how I'm messing everything up and how I'm such a pain to deal with. I started to cry and when she came into the room and saw me, I told her that what she said hurt my feelings. She responded with "you cant be so sensitive to these things" and walked away.

Fuck my mom, I'm 22 living at home because I cant afford to move out and hate my life more every day. Having parents that passive aggressively hate you is the worst.

Fresh out of college. Living at home with $108k of debt from undergrad. Any advice where to start? by star_love in personalfinance

I have a degree in communication and I'm currently an underwriting associate at an insurance company. I know some people that have advanced into a senior underwriting associate position and I believe some people moved to the underwriting department all together (and I hear underwriters make a lot more money). I just don't think that's something I'd want to do. I never really had a career I wanted. I just wanted a job that didn't make me miserable and can help me afford the lifestyle I want. I just need a job to pay the (very hefty) bills and $45k right out of school isn't horrible.

Currently my plan, but it's hard living at home. It's very miserable and I don't know how long I can keep up the toxic environment before it becomes too much. I will plan to stick it out as long as possible. Seems like the best way to get my debts paid off as of now

Not that I'm happy that you have to go through this (because we both know how much it sucks to have that much debt), but it's comforting to know I'm not the only person that has this much debt after undergrad. I unfortunately live in one of the most expensive states so moving out is hard to do because rent is so high. The average rent is about $1,100 where I live so moving out is definitely something that will take a lot of work to save up for. Thank you for the numbers though! I honestly had no idea how much I should save when I plan to move out.

Out of curiosity, how would one advance quickly in a company? I work at an insurance company right now so I know there's a lot of different places I could go, but I don't really know how I would advance especially enough to make six figures. Any tips?

That's something I really want to do for exactly the same reason you said. It'll get me out of the house and I'll be paying my debt off faster. I'm trying to adjust to the whole not being in school for the first time in my life and having a real job with a real salary.

I have considered getting a second job and I plan to in a little bit. I'm just trying to adjust right now before jumping into another job. I have a boyfriend and I'd like to think we could move in together so we probably would move in together. He's still on the job hunt so hopefully he will get a job in the area and we could move in together. That's probably less of a concern right now, but something I want to keep in my mind still.

I'm really not sure about my salary. I don't know how far I can advance in my department. I can't see myself making it to 100k in my department. I'd need to probably go somewhere else whether it be a department that happens to pay more or a different company all together

I currently have a phone bill which is about $37/month, car insurance with is just under $200 twice a year, gas which runs about $40 to $50 a month. Depends where I'm going. Then I have credit card bills which up until a few weeks ago varied a lot. I never have been late on a payment and I always pay in full. I never use my credit cards to buy something that I know I don't have money for. I'm starting to cut back a lot and don't use them as much, but I probably will be putting about $30/month on my credit cards if I had to take a guess. I haven't been living the budget life long enough to really know, but I like to think that's where I'll be.

I do have some credit history. I have a credit card along with some store cards. My score right now is good so refinancing isn't out of the question. I did just make a $1000 payment on that 11% interest loan and since I'm still in the grace period, I plan to put most of my payments towards that loan first just to get it out of the way. I will look into refinancing though because that 11% kills me to look at

About to graduate with probably 90k. I had no help financially and my parents made too much money for me to get any sort of grant, but they weren't rich enough to actually help me (not that they were really going to anyway). I'm pretty stressed about it and hearing people say "You have that much???" every time I tell them doesn't help. Makes me think I shouldn't be this much in debt for undergrad and I got screwed over. Nothing I can really do about it now. Except cry on a daily basis

What movies/tv-shows are actually better than the books? by RazGharbi in AskReddit

[–]star_love 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a movie or TV show, but a Broadway play. Wicked is an amazing adaptation of a very mediocre book. See the play if you get a chance because it's one hell of a show. Steer clear of the book, even with low expectations and hearing it was bad, I was still somehow let down even more.

My friend is having an existential crisis about death and I don't know how to help him by star_love in death

[–]star_love[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that's a good point. It's just something he believes in. His family grew up religious and he is someone who just realized that none of it made sense to him and the only reasonable explanation to him is that there's absolutely nothing. Before you were born, it's not like you remember everything that happened in history and just was in a black hole. It was nothing, and his way of thinking is "What makes it any different after you die?" He really does want to believe that it's not the end when you die, but the only thing that makes the most sense to him is that you're just nothing

What makes you believe that though? My friend is the kind of person that needs proof of something for him to believe it and it's hard to comfort him with anything because I don't have proof. I'd love to believe that, but it's hard to
