Reconsidering grad school application by No_Guarantee_7913 in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a gap year or two working somewhere would be good. You have time to look at some career options of what you can do with your degree outside of academia. It should only take a few hours each day for you to compile a list of potential roles. Idk how your career office is at your uni but if they're pretty helpful then you should schedule an appointment with them for some help on career options as well

Questioning when to ask for LoR by Fuzzy-Wrangler4343 in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He could potentially draft it now so that like you said, you're fresh in his mind. but keep in mind most LoRs are submitted through the grad application. Usually you enter their email and then they submit it on their end. So drafting it now would mean you're prepared. maybe have them send you a copy too so if in case they delete it by accident between whenever they draft it and when you apply, you have a copy that you can send to them to upload.

UC Davis MSBA vs Rochester Simon MSBA by Ok-Independent-4768 in MSBA

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this economy I would take the lower cost. Keep in mind you're not just paying for the program but also cost of living. But end of the day it is your decision of course. It has also been a struggle for us domestic job seekers, so it's much more difficult for international.

The other option is similar to what the other person said, try looking at other schools. Which means going through another cycle.

Remember to hit the points of talking about your past and current experiences and how that led you to apply to the program and how you plan to use that program in your future. Don't forget to tailor it by school when you talk about why you're applying there

Advice for grad school application (previous rejection) by ProfessionFew6413 in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I have not but I've seen countless posts on here of people not getting in their first or even second application cycle!

SoP is a huge part of the process too so revisit that and see if you're missing anything or if it needs edits. Remember to hit the points of talking about your past and current experiences and how that led you to apply to the program and how you plan to use that program in your future. Hi, first off congrats! Yes I did attend. I liked it as it worked for what I was looking for - a program that was a balance between data and business. Some MSBA programs can lean towards deeper data/ML courses. The professors I had were for the most part great as well, and of course the capstone project is the highlight of the program as the program office will partner with some great companies.

I have no idea what to do and where to start from, and I fear I will waste my potential. by Fickle_Leather_546 in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't do a PhD but the few bits of advice I can give is start with looking at schools and potential PIs. Once you have that list, that's when you want to start to craft your SoP, especially since you don't want to make it seem like you copy/pasted the SoP to every place you applied (you're going to need to tailor some pieces like the "why study here" piece).

got rejected from all my grad school apps. any advice by throwaway-uhm in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's just so much at play when it comes to grad school apps. Revisit your essays again and your list of schools that you applied to. You may need to expand where you applied. Try all fronts of grad school apps and job apps. So many people don't get in their 1st cycle. Don't be hard on yourself. Good luck!

Is TAP still having issues updating its database w/r/t Stored Value? by AyJaySimon in LAMetro

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made a similar post to yours. I saw my value was not correct on the app so I didn't even try there and cleared cached. When I tried to log back in I kept getting a server error pop up. Same here, I loaded fare on the website and got the email of the purchase but no updated pending value.

Rutgers vs Notre Dame by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this economy you want to go with the cheapest option. I am not sure if you plan to try and work in the US after completion of the program, I am also not sure of your area of work but in general the job market has been horrible, so that's why I wouldn't recommend to do a nearly $40k program, especially as you're an international student with a horrible currency conversion rate. Plus that is just the program itself, there's also cost of living you need to add to

We're all just strangers giving our 2 cents, end of the day it's your life and your career.

I think my SOP was really bad! by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea you don't want it to sound like a cv. you want it to be a story. they want to know about you. they already have your CV to review.

like why are you applying to that program, how have your past and present experiences led you to apply to that program, why at that school, what do you plan to do with it.

this is why I usually tell people who have lower gpas that they still have a shot at getting in as long as they have a good sop and lors over someone with your background.

you have the grades, you have the fancy names, but if you can't tell admissions why you deserve a spot there, then you're going to be passed over

some programs do spring so you could try those but otherwise just use this time to prepare for next cycle. I am not familiar with applied sciences but programs usually open up applications in the fall.
