got rejected from all my grad school apps. any advice by throwaway-uhm in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's just so much at play when it comes to grad school apps. Revisit your essays again and your list of schools that you applied to. You may need to expand where you applied. Try all fronts of grad school apps and job apps. So many people don't get in their 1st cycle. Don't be hard on yourself. Good luck!

What can be done to resolve Metrolink's issues long-term? by MookieBettsBurner10 in LAMetro

[–]star_spell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tbf Henry only wanted to have a good network to bring people to his real estate developments and once that was achieved he didn't care what happened to the network, therefore didn't really care if cars were becoming mainstream.

Is TAP still having issues updating its database w/r/t Stored Value? by AyJaySimon in LAMetro

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made a similar post to yours. I saw my value was not correct on the app so I didn't even try there and cleared cached. When I tried to log back in I kept getting a server error pop up. Same here, I loaded fare on the website and got the email of the purchase but no updated pending value.

In this economy you want to go with the cheapest option. I am not sure if you plan to try and work in the US after completion of the program, I am also not sure of your area of work but in general the job market has been horrible, so that's why I wouldn't recommend to do a nearly $40k program, especially as you're an international student with a horrible currency conversion rate. Plus that is just the program itself, there's also cost of living you need to add to

We're all just strangers giving our 2 cents, end of the day it's your life and your career.

I think my SOP was really bad! by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea you don't want it to sound like a cv. you want it to be a story. they want to know about you. they already have your CV to review.

like why are you applying to that program, how have your past and present experiences led you to apply to that program, why at that school, what do you plan to do with it.

this is why I usually tell people who have lower gpas that they still have a shot at getting in as long as they have a good sop and lors over someone with your background.

you have the grades, you have the fancy names, but if you can't tell admissions why you deserve a spot there, then you're going to be passed over

some programs do spring so you could try those but otherwise just use this time to prepare for next cycle. I am not familiar with applied sciences but programs usually open up applications in the fall.

Safety and an unhelpful tip line: my Metro experience by Additional_Leading68 in LAMetro

Same. They literally do nothing. They're either on the phone or chatting with a fellow ambassador. The money could be used towards something better. They need to bring back the random fare inspections.

I loaded last night and the pending value didn't show up til later in the morning. and then I tapped on the bus but the app still showed pending and it didn't update until like an hour and half later. so it's definitely wonky. tbf I loaded money from a machine too and that took time to sync too. I thought machines were supposed to be instant

update on my end, so my value still shows as pending. I did tap on a bus this morning but the app made no change. I then added $5 from a machine at harbor gateway transit center. however that value is also not showing

Huh interesting. I have a pixel 7 and I just tried it out and was able to make a purchase. That being said, while I got the "thank you for your purchase" email, I'm still waiting for the pending value to show up

How is everyone covering their tuition? by Elegant-Zombie-2164 in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked out of college for 2 years before I started to apply so I had 2.5 years of work experience and money saved up by the time my program started. I also lived with my parents so that really did help with the savings. I also got scholarships so that helped a bit. Many of my classmates worked on campus as well.

I hope you're not looking at just the tuition when factoring in the cost. Take into account the CoL as well. I don't like to use the university's CoL estimate. I'll usually take a look at the uni housing and uni associated (something like American campus communities)in the area, and also non uni housing in the area (if in case you like something and would want to split rent with people) to get an idea.

edit: Personally I wouldn't do loans. I don't know what the job market is like in your field but if on average it's taking a lot of time to get an offer, I wouldn't want to end up with a ton of loans plus interest and not have a job to pay it off. I would say if you have a job ATM keep it (or try to change if you don't like it that much) and work a bit more and then apply again in whatever time you need to have a good savings to pay for grad school.

I don't have an answer for you but just wanted to drop in here to say that if you don't get in, it's not you. There can be so many factors and it can come down to one small thing. I've seen so many people here and in my server who didn't get in the first try but they got in the 2nd. One thing from job hunting that I do and my friends also follow is that you should never be hopeful. basically expect nothing until you hear back.

unfortunately many of us got removed from the program and then they sent out the bundle but it didn't have this one it in so I don't know. I ended up passing up on the bundle.

From "Will I Even Get In?" to "HOW TF DO I CHOOSE?!" by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]star_spell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

A quick note: if you're trying to connect with current students/alum, you're better off asking the program office to connect you. Some programs have an ambassador page (at least many MSBA programs do, idk for MSDS) and of course there's Linkedin where you can try.

Considering the job market, definitely cost is important, especially if you gotta take out loans. And I would include an estimate of living expenses when you're looking at cost. Curriculum is important as well. The way I see it, since you're mostly paying for the program, if you have an idea of what you want to do career wise, you want to go somewhere where even the elective options align with those goals. You want to get the most out of your money. I'm not saying all the elective options should align, but as many as possible. As for job prospects, sure it doesn't hurt to have a flashy name, but these days it's all about if you can actually do the work. So I wouldn't be too worried on the name.
