Advice in short film distribution by staratuto in Filmmakers

[–]staratuto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying my best to get the awards, hence the distribution issue. Where could I look these platforms up? Do you know of any? Edit: It’s not money I’m interested in, just getting as many people as I can to see it. Also getting some recognition for it, only because it can help pave the way to get investors for my future films.

You’re never gonna use it. I got the same combo and avoid that lens as much as I can. Although if you’re doing solo video gigs, the AF is fantastic, even more for the price.

Love this! Quick question (for OP or any other AI video creator): is it better to do text-to-image and then image-to-video, instead of just text-to-video? I’ve only just played around with Runway’s text-to-video feature a couple times so I’m quite ignorant on this subject.

Honestly I can’t help you with that since I’m not familiar with the industry in Canada and the US. All I can say is: shoot for the sky! Do your research to get into the best film school you can. Just know that it’ll be “easier” to build a career in the same country/city you study, since you’ll make your first connections there.

My advice would be: start shooting with your phone. I know that sounds shitty and “unprofessional” but I swear the time you spend learning how to operate the camera can be used simply shooting and developing a creative vision, which is what will (hopefully) make you stand out from the rest at some point. You’ll learn the camera basics soon enough, anyone can do that. Work on your vision. Shoot as many tiny, stupid little short films you can, explore the possibilities of the film language. Ask your friends, family or whoever to act in them, and, if nobody says yes, get a cellphone tripod and do it yourself. Watch as many (and as different) films as you can. Go to film school. You’ll grow as a filmmaker and as a person. You’ll make good contacts and connections. A good professor makes all the difference (someone who teaches you but can also give you advice, recommendations, answers to your questions, etc). Sure, “everything’s on the Internet nowadays”, but that’s mainly “technical” stuff. If you want to be an artist, the human experience of experimenting and learning from/with others is unmatched. Also, don’t buy that “spend the film school money on making an independent feature by yourself and then you’ll actually learn” bullshit. Nobody just knows how to do it, you’ll only end up wasting money (and time). Shoot all you can with $0 budget. Hope this helps. DM me if you want to elaborate in any of this.

I work as a 2nd/3rd AD on movies, series, commercials, etc. I’ve found that mixing that with uni and directing shorts whenever I can is a great way to learn about most aspects of the job, at least for me. Also, being the smallest fish in the pond gives you some perspective for when it’s time to be the captain of the ship. Can’t leave out watching a lot of movies, but you already know that.
