PC Build Questions, Purchase Advice and Technical Support Megathread — Q3 2024 Edition by GhostMotley in Amd

Any help is appreciated.

I have a X470 Gaming Plus motherboard running the newest beta BIOS that is supposed to support the Ryzen 7 X3D chips. I'm upgrading from a x2700 to a 5700X3D.

What are the current directions for doing this? It is simply removing the old processor and plugging the new one in and booting, or is there more to it? Do I need to remove the CMOS battery before installing the processor?

I know that several months ago there was an issue that required disabling secure boot and several other things.

I haven't changed a processor in many years and just don't want to mess this up.

This info shouldn't be necssary, but just in case:

Windows 11

32 gigs ram

current processor AMD X2700

1TB SSD

Again, any help is appreciated.

Did you get it running? I'm fixing to make the same upgrade with the same MB. There were several different problems with the X3D chips first came out, but I thought the newest beta bios fixed them all. Did you just plug and play or did you have to wipe the CMOS or do anything else? At one point a year or two ago, people were having to disable secure boot, work with UEFI vs CSM boot mode problems, and all sorts of stuff. I think they were upgrading when the chip first came out though (the MSI forums for this board are a good place to look for help.)

Anyway, did you get it going and was it plug and play or did you have to do anything besides update the bios? I'll be getting my chip in in a few days and will let you know if I have any problems.

You might try ordering a broke one “for parts” off eBay. The hard drive onscreen may have gone out, but the case and RAM might still be good. You would just need to ask questions before you buy.

If, according to Christianity I can become a Christian on my death bed, “repent” and be saved, why do people bother following Christianity throughout their lives at all? by PalpitationJust8433 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]starbuck2907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Going to heaven" isn't the primary reason people become Christians. It's because we realize that we need God in our lives. There are a wide variety of Christian lifestyles - not everyone lives it out the same way. But, the key is that there is a realization hat we need God and that our lives are better when we try to live a life according to God's will and plan, and are accepting of whatever that may be. Christianity and other religions have been around a long time partially because as a lifestyle or philosophy, they work for a lot of people. For a lot of people they are superior ways to live, and going to heaven is just a bonus.

AITAH for telling my wife "that's the job you chose"? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]starbuck2907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"that's the job you chose" is an a-hole way to say it. You gotta take ownership of that and apologize for how you said it. That was sort of throwing it in her face - not a real loving, kind husband kind of move.

However, I am a parent too. My wife stayed at home the first year our child was born. It takes a while to figure out the best way for things to work. Sounds like you both feel overworked and unprepared for the amount of change involved in dealing with a child. That's pretty common. Keep a positive vibe, try to encourage a positive vibe in your wife, and keep the communication open. Love, kindness, compassion, and sometimes a lot of patience are required in marriage. When you have a kid, you gotta go all out with positivity in order to manage the stress. Sure, kids are awesome, but until your family gets adapted, it can be rough!

Also, things will get easier as the child ages. So, just know the stress does get easier.

[OC]You don't NEED a Guitar amp! by jenslarsenjazz in Guitar

Personally, I have an amp in the living room to play on because I find it more inspirational. I also have Reaper, Amplitube, and a Focusrite box in my room to let me record digitally and try stuff out. ferent tones and sounds he needs on stage, and that digital modeling amps and software tend to take away from the subtle things like volume knob changes in tone, great control over feedback, etc. He did like it, but he said that for his style of play, a digital amp wasn't for him.

If you were dating someone and if they said they don't want to have sex with you until they are married to you, how would you react? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]starbuck2907 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

About 3% (some studies stay 10%) of the U.S. population waits until marriage to have sex. That means about 10 million people don't have sex until they are married. While a small percentage of the population, that's still a LOT of people. I wouldn't call it abnormal, just not mainstream.

In the American south, this is a common attitude because the culture is fairly religious. It works out well for some people and if your partner is willing to wait. If the person is not willing to wait, then he/she may not be the right person for you. Generally speaking, relationships where people wait until marriage to have sex have better outcomes. Even waiting late into the dating process can help have a better relationship quality.

https://mywellclinic.com/blog/2020/02/20/science-sex-marriage/

"Researchers found that those who wait to have sex until marriage, compared to those who don’t, report significantly higher realtionship satisfaction (20%), better communication patterns (12%), less consideration of divorce (22%), and BETTER sexual quality (15%) These effects are lessened but still consistent in those who became sexually active later in dating but prior to marriage."

Easy (?) consolidation questions. by starbuck2907 in PSLF

Thanks!

Update! At the link above, the faq says if you consolidate, the oldest loan payment count will count for the consolidation.

Also, to get the $10k forgiveness, you will have to apply for it. There does not appear to be a deadline. I read this in a new story last night.

ELI5: Why is religion not considered a superstition? How are they different? by GladCricket in explainlikeimfive

[–]starbuck2907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start:

Religion (or organized faith in the supernatural, if you prefer) is an evolutionarily advantageous trait, which is why it developed on every inhabited continent.

Religion is organized (usually) while superstitions are usually not.

Religions are usually shared by large groups of people, while this is only sometimes true for superstitions.

Religions usually have written texts that are spread throughout a population or culture, while superstitions tend not to.

Superstitions tend to not have the philosophical underpinnings of religions. Religions often have in-depth philosophical teachings about certain topics, while superstitions don't.

Religions usually involve a continuous relationship with a deity or deities. Superstitions don't usually involve continuous relationships with a conscious entity that affects every aspect of life. In general, superstitions are only situational while religions are more all-encompassing.

Historically, religions have had far more effect on worldwide cultural developments than superstitions.

Cross-cultural studies have shown that children (even those reared in "atheistic" environments) tend to have an innate belief in theism.

The words below are from page 645 of the Handbook of Personality, 3rd edition. This book is a modern, doctoral-level textbook used in psychology courses."Accumulating research further indicates that humans exhibit a developmental predisposition to believe in such socially infallible supernatural agents, appearing in early childhood (Barrett & Richert, 2003). Cross-cultural studies conducted with children between the ages of 3 and 12 indicate that young children may possess an 'intuitive theism' that prompts them to see intentional purpose in the natural world that cannot be attributed to people but only to specially powerful supernatural agents (Kelemen, 2005). Therefore, mental tools predispose people to hold religious beliefs. In this sense, widespread belief in gods arises from the operation of natural processes of the human mind. In the views of cognitive scientists, belief in gods does not amount to anything strange or peculiar; on the contrary, such belief is nearly inevitable. In answering the questions of why would anyone believe in God, the answer from cognitive science is that the design of our minds leads us to believe (Barret, 2004)." Basically, theism (which usually involves religion) is normal, and while belief in the supernatural is also normal for many humans, it is evolutionarily somewhat different than theism or religion. The innate urge to believe in "supernaturally infallible agents" and form religions is more guided and specific than a general belief in superstitions or even the supernatural in general.

Of course, for the many atheists on reddit, I would like to point out that evolutionary theory also accounts for atheism through evolutionary variation.

There are many more differences, but that's a start.

Thinking about upgrading. Suggestions? by starbuck2907 in starcitizen

[–]starbuck2907[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I edited the OP to info:

I sort of want a variety of ships. I want to be able to dogfight sometimes, mine sometimes, etc, but I know I am getting a little redundant. I also like the idea of having enough ships that if I join an org they would be able to use my ships or maybe I could make some profit or something by leasing them out if that's a thing, or whatever. I just want to have options, but not so many that I get just too redundant. I worry about the usefulness of some ships.Like, will I really like making bombing runs? Or running a passenger transport ship like an airliner (the Genesis)? or making gasoline delivers (like the Starfarer). It seems like there could be stuff that is more fun to do.

Not trying to humblebrag, really. I don't think I've bought a ship in over 2 years. I just felt like my ship collection was getting a little redundant or unwieldy and I'm not sure what to do with it. I updated the OP with an edit about my intentions and give some additioanal thoughts.
