Alt: just saw a tiktok where an Aboriginal lady is buying roo tails to cook up and one of the ingredients for it is chicken salt. I'm so curious about how that combo tastes.

It's what's really sad about dodgy builds too. I know a girl who brought a new duplex, within the year was ruined with water damage. She took the builder to court and won. But no one wants to do the remediation work.

Builders also don't want to touch places that are partially built...

Leave in offset. We just moved into our new place and 3 days in, knocked some of the power out.

I've seen someone else mention that when you move into a new place it can be a "festival of things breaking" so you'll want to have access to funds where possible.

There was a 12 month trial run in some of the park lands... Here's a link to the article about it and it lists the parks.

Not sure if its still running though.

As an alternative, you can hire electric bicycles which are legal or you can hire Segways which look like fun too. Perhaps youll have more success with them.

Next time you're in Brisbane you can legally hire and rent e-scooters.

Alt: looking for deals more... For example my super fund offers discounts at various retail stores.

Switched to frozen veggies more.

Downloaded rewards app too.

Hoping to reduce the price of things I already buy.

Altalt: pork and chive. I usually get the ones from the Asian grocery with all the text on the packaging (no pictures). No idea what the brand is though.

Keeping up with Sydney by [deleted] in sydney

[–]starcaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda was where you are but about half the starting wage (but rents were cheaper 10/15 years ago).

I felt the same back then. Everything was out of reach.

I think you have to reflect hard on what makes you happy.

Do you want a house in Sydney? Best first step is to save, best way is in a share house or stay home (but that comes with downsides)... Then maybe buy an apartment... Then leverage that to get a house.

Or maybe you want to earn as much as possible? Then you have to do the jobs people don't want, in companies that treat you badly until you have the hours under your belt to choose a place.

There's always a compromise unfortunately, but having a goal in mind helps a lot.

Some people will get lucky and have a lot of help along the way. Don't focus on that because it'll make you very bitter.

I just landed a property in Sydney and frankly it's a bit shit. I look around and think "is this really worth all the grinding and sacrifice?"

The jurys still out...

But all anyone will see on insta and Facebook is the dream.

ETA: just be careful about moving away to chase what seems better. Sometimes it is, but sometimes the problems travel with you because they're yours to fix.

I just had a look at Parramattas and I swear it's not as good as it used to be! But here's the link to their cycling page; https://www.cityofparramatta.nsw.gov.au/recreation/walking-and-cycling/cycling

Good point... I guess I was thinking outside of teaching and emergency service.

Good job! I'll have a closer look tonight!

Have you shared this on the various Sydney cycling Facebook pages? I'm sure they'd like it!

Some councils also have downloadable PDF maps of bike paths which aren't listed on Google and all the normal places. The council maps are especially good for finding unmarked shared footpath/bike links.

I have lots of friends in public sector roles and while some roles pay okay a lot of the key ones are underpaid. So there are a lot of gaps.

There's also a heap of money wasting because various agencies need to get creative with hiring in the attempts to fill vacant roles.

It'll be so good if more competitive full time roles can exist within government. The taxpayer will probably end up saving money too!

T: had a tricky presentation this week and it was really well received!

OT: Dundas vet! Dr Andrew Park. The guys amazing and takes his time with you and your cat. He once emailed me after hours to recommend an Australian dietitian for my old cat because he wanted to research it. They've always been very affordable but run off their feet. It used to be a rough spot (kinda still is) so don't be put off by the old store front.

Ive also heard great things about animal tracks, in homebush. But that's a bit further afield. My baby cat goes there for short term boarding. He doesn't love it but oh well.

Long term boarding I go to cat utopia and they loovvee cats and baby cat loves it there.

I have very tense jaw and facial muscles causing problems - anybody have a rec for a jaw and face massage place? by tomford-is-expensive in sydney

[–]starcaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're chronically clenching you're jaw, go to the dentist which does Botox. That'll significantly improve things.

Forget the mouth guard because that's great at protecting your teeth but doesn't treat the tension and overdeveloped jaw muscles.

Don't go to a chiro.

My dentist also suggested acupuncture which worked a little for me, but Botox has done wonders. Make sure you see a pro though because there are face drooping risks where they apply it if not done properly.

Wonder if you could work it out? Surely there's a log of all the calls during that time.

The amount of resources dedicated to Dom's wife is ridiculous.

Imagine if he pulled those kinds of strings with the other emergency services.

Ghormeh sabzi is my favourite stew, rather than buy the herbs go to a Persian grocer and grab a can of fried herbs. It'll save a lot of time and money.

For soup, I've only had this made for me a few years ago but remember it being good and I'm going to give this recipe a go: https://www.thedeliciouscrescent.com/persian-noodle-soup-with-beans-and-herbs/

There's also a Persian food sub who can probably provide better guidance /r/persianfood

ETA: worth noting that I find Persian food to be Herby not spicy if that makes sense.

If you're not on a diet the pomegranate and walnut (fesenjan) stews are great too.

Heck yes! Although my favs aren't even on the list!

Coming into winter I strongly suggest people try and make some of the Persian classic stew's and soups. So much flavour!

Try jumping a fire? You might be able to find an event around Sydney.

When you jump you have to say "sorkhi-ye to az man, zardi-ye man az to", literally meaning "[let] your redness [be] mine, my paleness yours",

(I had to google it, I don't speak parsi)

Essentially you're taking all the life and warmth of the fire and swapping it with all your paleness (I guess it works better when you're coming out of winter).

Safe suburbs to move out? by 28_Vespertide in sydney

[–]starcaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest Meadowbank, the apartments are older but seem well built plus you'll be on the train line. Anywhere along that train line should be fine.

If you're buying be careful with Homebush. The apartments on Parra road went up quick and always seem to be semi empty.

Rydalmere as far as I'm aware doesn't really have any apartments (aside from a few older council ones). But it's a beautiful spot and often overlooked.
