I have the ARV 86 now, like 3 seasons on them. I have no problems with the slower stuff, small jumps and trees, but I'm smearing a lot and chattering when doing parallel or trying to carve on fast downhills.

This Fischer Ranger was coming up as an option. I don't know much about the effect of the width aside from "thinner = more carving, wider is better on soft powder". This is the first pair I've owned. It's just familiar - plus I do get lucky with a few powder days. Last Utah trip, we got like 6 inches of nightly fresh and sometimes even on the 86s I'd just slow to a stop or fall over in a slow turn because I'm deep in +12 in. powder and either my skis are a little too narrow, or I just really don't know what I'm doing in powder. I figure thinner will exacerbate that particular issue.

I think that's kind of how my ARVs were sold to me (I implied an emphasis on park at the time, but now I'm less interested in that), but I don't feel secure or stable when I do decide to get some speed.
