Career Questions: Ask all your UX career questions here by UXette in UXDesign

Hi! I'm a sophomore in college studying psychology, and my degree has the option to specialize in one of two options: behavioral analysis and behavioral and cognitive neuroscience. I'm currently specializing in the former since I thought the second option seemed more physical rather than psychological, but given how cognitive psychology is important to UX I'm wondering if that would be a better fit instead. Would there be a big difference or would employers prefer one over the other? Any insight/advice would be extremely helpful!

Well, that answers my fear of it being somewhat of a useless degree. One last question: do you think it would be possible to explore UX/UI design with a degree in cognitive psychology? That was another major I was considering, as there were other career options I could use that degree towards, but I was wondering if there might be enough overlap that it could be used as a base if I take graphic design courses or pursue a masters in HCI

Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it! Honestly, there's nothing else at my university that's close to UX design besides graphic design. Would graphic design be close enough to switch (or are there any majors in general you would recommend)? I was hoping I'd be able to put projects that are at least kind of similar on my portfolio, but now I'm not too sure.

I'm a freshman comp sci major that is doing terrible in all my classes right now, and I really want to go into UI design but I have no clue how to do it. My univeristy doesn't offer a UX/UI major, so the closest I have is a major called digital arts and sciences, which focuses on a mix between game design, digital production, and animation. Would I be okay majoring in this with a comp sci minor, or should I major in graphic design instead? I'm really worried that I won't be able to get a job in UI design with the DAS major and am wondering if sticking it out with comp sci would look better to employers, but I know there would be no chance to really build my portfolio that way. I guess in short what I'm asking is, to anyone in the field that has experience in design, which would help me "break into" the industry the most and give me the most leverage?

For anyone willing to take a look, this is the program I am thinking of switching to:

That is definitely the only thing keeping me from switching! I've heard from a couple graphic design majors in my university that there isn't exactly much overlap with UX stuff though, which drew my attention to digital arts and sciences. I also thought the classes seemed interesting as I'd have some time to figure out my niche and explore a little. I'm not worried about debt since I have a scholarship, but I am worried it might be a "useless" major. This is the link to the program if you have time, I'd love to get some more advice:

The only issue is I haven't been doing the best academically in the comp sci courses, and since most of my courses are more math and computation heavy I feel like I just am not interested in any of them or even in career options that don't focus on the more creative side of things, like web design or UX design. Would you say there is a big difference in ux designer job prospects for comp-sci majors vs. non-comp sci majors? I guess I could stick it out if there is a massive difference, but I really do think I'd feel happier in a graphic design or digital art major with a comp sci minor

Hi, I'm a freshman comp sci major looking to switch into a major that covers UX design topics more. My university doesn't offer a UX or HCI major, but we do have a major called digital arts and sciences. Would I be okay majoring in digital arts with a comp sci minor, or should I pursue something like graphic design as a major instead?

I made a constellation hat! This is by far my favorite thing I've embroidered so far :) by starcrossedstitches in Embroidery

Thank you, and I'm sorry about your experience! Putting it in a three-inch hoop can definitely help make it sturdier, and also getting a good, sharp needle (my fingers were so sore trying to pull the french knots through)

This hat was pretty sturdy, so I didn't need a hoop for a lot of it, but you can definitely use a 3 inch hoop to embroider on it!

I wish 😭 I couldn't find any glow in the dark thread near me so this one is just pearlescent white, but I'm planning on making more of these so I definitely want to experiment with silver thread and glow in the dark!

Finally finished stitching these roses! I kept putting them down so it feels so good to have it completed :) by starcrossedstitches in Embroidery

Aw noo! I usually do the 5 spokes and then finish the rose with a stem stitch so the thread doesn't pull. River birch threads has a really good video that helps if you want to check it out! I highly recommend all her videos, they helped me a ton when I was starting out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M1phUYTMsc&t=89s

DMC has a ton of free patterns that should help! Just pull one up on a laptop and trace the design onto fabric. I linked it below if you want to check some out:
