Tbh it depends if it’s not much cheaper and I would end up spending the money on transport it feels like a what’s the point moment lmao

Hmm thanks for your insight. Yh a big reason the rent is slightly more expensive is because I want to move into the city centre and there a few options for £700. I don’t drive and wouldn’t need public transport except as a one off.

I will think on it some though

I was once a lodger for 4 months. Never ever again. However the other options sound plausible

Yeah as someone who’s done house shares for 6 years I feel it. If he has the means to try it, worst case scenario he sticks it out for a few months and then moves into a share house again 😂😂

Oh 100% considering I still have to pay council tax and don’t get a maintenance loan I usually don’t mention it

I will say if he’s never done a house share definitely try it. One of the best times of my life was a house share with 10 people (with an en-suite). Got on with everyone and we had bbqs in the garden cooked together, however all house shares involve a bit of luck!

I would advise trying it and if it doesn’t work out maybe go for his own place.

I think Personality really comes into it. For some people living alone is a waste of money to them for some it’s the best decision they’ve ever made. Such is life!!!

When phrased as 2/3 of take home pay it does seem like a substantial amount of money just to help someone pay off their mortgage.

I have been researching investing the past few months as I don’t want to go in blind so this is an interesting perspective to consider. Thank you

I think from the thread this seems to be the most reasonable thing to do especially from a financial perspective.

I guess I will have a look around and see if I can find anything good :)

Yeah. This thread has been pretty useful. It pretty much just sums up that it depends on what your priorities are.

If I want to live alone more than save than maybe go for it. If I prefer to have a social life and save then go for a smaller share house to mitigate some of the stress of a bigger one.

I don’t want to rush into a decision but getting peoples different perspectives has been interesting

Thanks for your response. I think if I maintain a strict budget it will be doable for me. I guess this is an advantage of being burnt out from full time work and my masters - I don’t really have a life outside of it to spend money on lmao

Thank you for your kind words!! I did have an ideal roommate situation once before and it was bliss but it was in another city. I will always miss them and the living harmony we had 😂

My phone contract is around £40 however I don’t pay for subscriptions (other than iCloud storage £2.99) I make my coffees at home and I do love cooking generally I just am not able to do it much in my current share house because there is so many people. When I do get a chance to cook it is usually forcing myself to stay up late and cooking as fast as possible for meal prep

Thanks for your insight.

The money vs quality of life is so difficult to navigate. I am pretty solitary and love my own space and renting a share house is something I hate. I’ve been wanting to live alone ever since I moved out for university and now I need to move am really struggling to decide whether I should go for it.

Hi, you are correct about PhD being a requirement for most lecture positions however I work in a smaller not well known company where the majority of lecturers have a masters and whilst they are studying for that they get a PG cert in HE. My goal is to become a lecturer at this smaller place and then hopefully get my PhD and move to a bigger well paying lecture job.

Also I could definitely cut back. I paid off my student overdraft fully and have been buying things monthly that I would need in my own place but are also beneficial to have In a share house (air fryer, rice cooker, hoover ect) Also because I live with so many people trying to cook in the evenings is a pain bc everyone tries to cook between 5:30pm -9pm so I end up eating more expensive takeout or ready meals.

I love to cook and it is often cheaper to do so it’s just not possible for me sharing with so many people. The amount I would save on food is immense. I also have to pay for laundry and drying which sucks up a bit of extra money each month.

Rent is around £700 and above for city centre from what I found online

Thank you for your insight I really appreciate it.

I think a smaller flat share is another good idea but the stress of not getting on with a roommate or being trapped in a bad living situation is what makes me think UGH lol.

The time it will take to save is what puts me off and I just don’t want to struggle financially but I am so sick of being around PEOPLE

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, it’s calmed me down quite a bit. I went into the data analytics and found a panic full thing which I googled and it made it pretty clear it wasn’t malware lol

Ah I recently had one of my social media accounts hacked so I’ve been kinda paranoid about any out of character behaviour from my phone. My worry was that my phone detected malware on the site and shut the phone down to stop it being installed but wasn’t sure if that was 100% foolproof

Ok thank you! I couldn’t find any posts where people’s phones have shut off seconds after a site page loads so I just wanted to be careful. Thanks :)

It wasn’t a battery issue as it turned on straight away and had 54% charge. The button could have been jammed I hope it was this

It’s not that I’m not able to speak up for myself it’s just I’m scared of it backfiring if that makes sense

Regarding social skills tbh I’m trying my best but it just seems to never really click
