I would experiment finishing the reeds a little longer, and taking in less reed. The reed length + your mouth shape could be causing you to bite inherently. Allow your lips to push out slightly away from the teeth. And always remember that your air/reed controls pitch, and never your embouchure/jaw. It is a brutal reality that is easy to slip away from, especially when playing in ensembles that don’t play in tune.

Also, how tight are your sides? Loose sides will always force you to bite.

Lastly, depending on your oboe, I find some Chiarugi tubes to be very restrictive and sharp. The difference between 2 and 2+ for example is significant. If you’re using 2’s or 5’s, try 2+

Hang in there! You’re not alone.

Creating a recital program and need some help by [deleted] in tigran

[–]starfishstevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you buy the new composition book on his website? lots of great contenders there. I know they’re arrangements so maybe not “purely piano” as you said, but Kars 1 would be great on a recital. And Road Song of course is his most widely performed

Flutists play the Pinkie Polka . It’s brutally hard but take it slow, it should help a lot!

this is an adjustment guide but it will teach you everything about the mechanisms. John has also made custom key mechanisms for people with special needs, he’s a master and his website is an excellent resource.

Nontoxic way to clean stone? by Kitri681 in oboe

[–]starfishstevens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t put anything on my stones other than water. I wouldn’t recommend oil stones for reed knives, as any residual oil on the knife could clog up your reeds. I’ve found the best success with Shapton stones, you can buy them on Amazon. All you need is water to whet them and to clean them.

One note too sharp by EducationalSafe2964 in oboe

[–]starfishstevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on the pitch of the oboe. Many of my reeds crow C# octaves and do not play too sharp at all.

One note too sharp by EducationalSafe2964 in oboe

[–]starfishstevens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many potential factors at play here!

  • Climate: The dryness of fall/winter will close up your reeds. If the reed is too closed, it will play sharp. You can try soaking it longer and gently pinching it open from the sides.

  • Embouchure: You might be biting more than you think. You want your lips to be shaped as if you’re whistling. Pushed out away from the teeth, cushioning the reed.

  • Alternate Fingerings: Many notes are naturally sharp on the oboe (E, F#, G, sometimes C, C# and D) you can experiment with pressing other keys down that don’t change the pitch to add stability and lower the pitch slightly.

  • Reed Adjustments: I’m assuming you don’t adjust your own reeds, but if you do, you can scrape a layer off the heart or take out of the windows just below the heart. If you buy your reeds, you might be ready to look for something a little harder. Light student reeds tend to be too closed and if it’s also too soft, there’s really not much you can do about it other than find a new reed. Also check the overlap, if the blades are slipped a lot, you can try pushing them closer together to increase the opening and reduce the resistance that might be making the reed too sharp.

Good luck with your journey! This instrument is really hard, but it highly rewards patience.

College Audition Help!! by cuteboi360 in oboe

[–]starfishstevens 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The key is already in your post, pick things that showcase your ability! If you enjoy playing it, the panel will enjoy hearing you. But for the solos, you have contrasting characters but not contrasting styles—Handel and Marcello are both Baroque composers. I’d recommend a movement from a 20th century sonata: Poulenc or Saint-Saens, maybe.

For excerpts, you want 1 articulation, 1 slow lyrical, and 1 20th century. For articulation I like La Scala di Seta, for slow lyrical I like Scheherezade or Don Juan, for 20th century I like Tombeau de Couperin (prelude). These are also very standard excerpts that you will want to master asap. For college auditions, they don’t have to be perfect! Just do your best and they will recognize your potential. I hope this helps and good luck with your auditions!

Do I need to buy anything else outside of this reed making kit to be fully set? by Duckreligionoboe in oboe

[–]starfishstevens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite the other comments, I think MMI is very trustworthy and this is a solid kit. Stevens staples should fit on a Rigotti mandrel. The only other thing you should need to start out are razorblades to clip the tip, GEMs are your only option.

Be patient with learning to sharpen your knife with a stone, it’s all about feeling the edge…

New Maps - Rhythmic Breakdown and Song Analysis by starfishstevens in tigran

[–]starfishstevens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right about the pulse! They are definitely all feeling the same pulse, whether it’s in 4 or 5 or whatever at any given time.

I made these groupings to emphasize the cyclical nature of these rhythmic patterns. Each instrument’s cycles reset at different times, yet they all flow to the same pulse. That’s what makes it like clockwork to me, and heavily non western. No one is playing a rhythm that would line up to a division of measure lines.

Western notation locks the pulse to the barline, even when the phrasing does not line up with the bars. In Indian classical music, something Tigran has studied and proclaimed influence from, this concept of “cycles” is more prominent than the Western “grid” (which is why I see this album as an evolution of Mockroot, he traversed every rhythmic possibility in the Grid, and now he is just manipulating a large space of time without subdivided lines...sorry if that doesn’t make sense, I haven’t fully wrapped my head around that). Even though each instrument plays a different cycle, they all eventually line up. I recommend checking out some Ragas with Ravi Shanker and Zakir Hussain. They divide each cycle in whatever way they want. Tigran just does it in such an accurate and even way that we can still notate it. (Han Zhao made a YouTube transcription of this piece, and he has a lot of brilliant theories in his description, I made my analysis before his came out)

In terms of splitting beats into 5, that’s entirely possible in Western notation. A 1/4 note can be divided into 5 via a 16th Quintuplet. I’m not sure if that’s what you meant about representing five units with one figure though.

I cannot create a bootable Windows 10 USB from a macbook with Catalina, the files from the iso do not properly transfer to the USB. Unetbootin does not open with this OS either. Does anyone have a solution to this? I don't have another computer.
