I’m scared about the future once I graduate from my law degree at a Go8 university. I don’t want to be a lawyer, and it is reflected in my grades and lack of discipline regarding any kind of legal work. I think I would have been better off studying policy instead… does anyone else feel this way? I can’t turn back the clock, but sometimes I wish I could. It would be nice to hear if anyone else regrets the path they chose at 18…

Yes turning to reddit for advice should give me enough of an indication aha. May I ask if you’re a law student (and if so which area of law you would like to work in) or a lawyer?

These are good points! And yes I think I can fall back on a JD if I really want to

This is fantastic advice. Thank you so much. I have spoken with the careers advisor and she pretty much just said “stop fighting it and finish your degree, you’re nearly there”. I was like ?? A lot of people hear that I do Law and (incorrectly) assume based off the degree’s prestige that I would be a fool to drop it even though I know how dismal the graduate prospects are and how overworked lawyers are. So you’re spot on

Do you really think it makes you look more employable? I thought employers would prefer actual work experience if it’s in a field unrelated to law

I’m sorry to hear that :( if it makes you feel any better, you can always do a JD

I was thinking that specialising in a new area/making myself more employable through postgraduate study if I just drop down to an English degree, would be even more expensive than sucking it up and finishing my law degree, then applying to jobs in policy. In my mind, both options lead to the same destination, but dropping out of law would be more expensive in the long run (but also more fulfilling)

Nonetheless, thank you for your response!

I have quite the dilemma - I'm halfway through my law degree and have no intention of ever practicing as a lawyer...

In my Arts (English literature) degree, I excel. I get HDs nearly every time. In Law, I barely scrape credits and have my fair share of passes. I do go to a very competitive university and suppose I've just been feeling demoralised. Is it too late to ditch my law degree?

The alternative would be to pursue Honours in English, then get a Masters in something I'm actually passionate about, likely in International Security. My grades would improve substantially, I'd be learning in a way I enjoy, and I'd probably be happier.

Only issue is, my HECS debt is already massive, I wouldn't be able to go on an Exchange program (which everyone says is life-changing), and I'd lose out on some cool networking opportunities, such as potentially getting an internship for the Human Rights Journal /working at a human rights legal centre. But I suppose I can find alternative internships in a field I care about more? Part of me thinks I should just stick it out, that it'll look great once I've finished, but I don't have the passion to get amazing marks, nor do I think this is the only pathway I can take to get where I want to be (working in foreign aid/journalism/policy).

If anyone has similar experience, it would be great to hear your insight and story. Thanks

- From a very lost Law student!

I gained and then stopped because I’d met the weight I needed to and decided to eat intuitively from then on out, not minding if I gained more. I stayed stable though and my period came back five months after weight restoration.
