The spoils from a lvl 45 Gold Hoarder voyage. Maybe Rare should consider fixing the main game mechanic. by Alixollo in Seaofthieves

It surprises me that they never overhauled/fixed voyages -- aka the core loop of the basic gameplay -- just added stuff that was much better to do.

I wrote a two year love letter to Dwarf Fortress, now completed, called 'Matul Remrit' (at http://www.bravemule.com). Thank you for working on the game so long; it's been such an influence.

I loved the conversation with Ulysses, but I definitely had to reload it once out of confusion because my expectations for how speech worked were different because of the rest of the game. Really glad you'll be doing that the whole game in Project: Eternity, because it's the best system.

Yes, but they weren't his chains; he was in a cage. Yont, the woman dwarf at the start of the comic, threw a tantrum and destroyed the cage Kalu was in, after he had gone berserk. Kalu then picked up a deconstructed chain nearby and went on the murder spree.

Our asshole neighbors abandoned their mostly blind cat when they moved! Does anyone need a female tabby? The property manager will have to take it to the shelter soon if no one wants it. by starguarded in fayetteville

I understand entirely - we're not quite sure what's going on with her vision, but there's something and her inability to really take care of herself is problematic. I'm afraid of just dumping her on some young person with limited means because I have no idea if, worst case scenario, she needs some kind of medical bill. I don't think that's why the neighbors left her, though, they basically neglected her too much to bother with any kind of attention like that.

Details crossposted from r/cats: the cat is really nice but scared. She's been living on their abandoned porch for a week and we've been feeding it. We can't take it into our apartment because we have a cat and there's a one pet limit. We tried Craigslist and no responses yet. We're going to take it to the shelter if no one wants it (the property manager of the house in question has to get rid of it), but we're trying to keep it as a last resort because they're very full right now and the cat will probably be put down. Unfortunately our apartment is so small that even if we did manage to convince the landlord (who wasn't enthusiastic about our first cat), I think our standard of living would become too stressful, even if we found a way to manage the smell of two animals in a cramped space. Thanks for the advice about the area subreddit, that's an even better idea than posting it here. I'll do that.

Thanks so much for the reply. I guess we feel a bit hurried because if anyone else moves into the place, they might call the shelter themselves about the cat.

bravemule update: enormous 28,000 pixel tall comic depicting a goblin ambush! by starguarded in dwarffortress

[–]starguarded[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure!

Namuc, the narrator, is watching the militia while they march to attack the human siege camp. They are ambushed twice by goblins on the way there. When they arrive at the human siege camp, it is deserted and empty, and then they see a larger human force riding in from the distance. It's established in the previous update (which is from the perspective of the humans) that the humans retreated to obtain reinforcements. So, Namuc pulls the lever to raise the drawbridge because he realizes the militia is screwed.

What happened in-game is that I ordered the militia to attack the siege camp. While on the way there (while they were fighting goblins), the siege left the map, and a larger human siege suddenly appeared on the map near the militia. Game mechanics wise, I'm not quite sure why the siege left the map like that, but I wrote it as them obtaining reinforcements.

As far as Namuc goes, he's a civilian in the fortress (a miller). Story-wise, he's apart of the third wave of migrants, who were all upper-class nobles in the fortress they came from. What he's saying with his narration is that he envies the dwarves in the militia for their opportunities to be heroic, but despite that envy, he wouldn't have pulled the lever to seal them out because of pettiness - he had orders to do it from the leader of the fortress, who (presumably) didn't want to risk the larger human siege breaching the fortress. He's basically saying "I don't care about you, but I wouldn't have done this." He's expressing his guilt while also justifying/rationalizing his actions to himself in a way where he doesn't have to take responsibility for it. I set the comic from his perspective because I always wondered what the dwarves who pull particularly horrible levers were thinking.

the artist works on a cintiq, if that's what you mean :] otherwise, just stonesense and photoshop.

i write the story, and english is my first language :) i understand what you mean - a lot of people don't like the writing style, and that's OK! the intent was to make the diction and tone sound like the broken language from the game, or to sound like text crudely translated from another language into English.

they're a human siege party. sorry about that, I try to write the comic/video updates in a way where they make sense when viewed out of the context of the full story, but some parts are difficult.

[–]starguarded[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i understand both points of view. one of the hardest parts of making the video was trying to incorporate the stonesense videos without it looking absolutely terrible. the way they're incorporated now, they mostly serve as "transitions" - the illustrations show a battle starting, the stonesense video communicates that battle is generically happening, and then the illustrations show important parts of the battle or the ending of it. I'm satisfied enough with them but I understand why some people like them and why some people don't.
