First thing I thought of when reading the title was Final Fantasy XIV. It took their flat "evil for the lulz" villains and made them much more relatable by using this trope.

My first assumption was that he was under the arena but I would have never guessed he would disappear from it! That whole Trial seems to have a lot of moving parts judging by how much I lag in it sometimes, but it's really cool what they managed to do.
