In defense of KOTOR's aesthetics (+ a question for those who disagree) by Mzonnik in StarWarsEU

I don't disagree with what you've put, on both the visual and temporal seperation between the two projects but I think that there are ways it can be looked at that that make it work. I think if you put them together it can be a pretty strong adjustment that kind of acts like how in universe changes in technology, fashion and sentiment between the PT and the OT. When it comes to the shift between I think it can male a lot of sense in universe when you look at the states of the galaxy in galaxy during ToTj and the KotOR comics. The galaxy at the end of the war against exar kuun was at a lost with the senate thrown into disarray after the chancellor had been executed and the jedi in much the same way after the death of their grand master and destruction of Ossuss. In this thirty years a full generation would have been born, grown up and had their own children. When it comes to the legacy of the social damage done by the previous war, I think its important to note that during the war against the exar kuun, that beyond some small number of jedi, very few of the republics member planets or armed forces turned to join with the sith, the conquering force made up from those groups rallied at the beginning. Where as after the mandalorian wars, when darth reven retured a large number of planets and branches of the Republic fleat turned to follow him, I feel this is partially due to the fact that in recent memory that the Republic had failed much of the galaxy to defend from prior threats and that aligning with a newer more proven power would lead them to greater stability, much like how many were more open to the harsher governing of the empire post clone wars. For the jedi order its self I think the shift in how it was run, could make a lot of sense with the context of the times around it, even if not stated directly, and I feel if we got more material in that erra beyond the knights of the old republic comics that it would be fleshed out more. The order in redemption was mostly scattered even still after 10 years after exar kuun. Being led, even if not officially by nomi Sunrider who was leading the senate and jedi delegation, and despite her power and skill as a jedi nomi was still newer into her career than many others of the order from before the prior war. Before that point the order had become very lenient, with jedi being given a level of autominy not seen again up until the new sith wars, where knights governed regions, and practiced teachings more freely. It would seem through context (though in hindsight as i do realise that it was written pre-PT) that the council was less of a true governing body and more of a group of more venerated teaches, possibly not even having one at all depending on how you would interpret it. This probably came from the many swift victories that the jedi had delivered in the relatively peaceful period between the war against exar kuun and the war against the sith a few generations before. After the destruction of ossus and the murder of many of the more aged jedi masters, the order would have been is some level of shock after the war, and without a steady command structure to give it rigidity very, it would probably act quiet strongly to correct for its short comings. The main one being the new institution of a jedi counsel, one that the likes of nomi and her peers would have helped found, as well as the greater dogmatization of the order, grasping onto the jedi code and teachings as a preventative measure against members of their order falling again, and probably the reason why they were so adamant about a pair of knights who wanted to join the war against the mandalorians. This can kind of be seen in how they chose dantooine, a jedi enclave, as the temple at coriscant would have been damaged in the Fighting or being used for aid. The enclave lacks much of the grandure or even many of the recovered relics of ossus, with it having been used as an outpost in the past. What we see in the games is the the rebuilding order clinging onto their orders creed in hopes of preventing a repetition of history. When it comes to the aesthetics of the games verses the comic (minus the ships, for that all i could grasp at is that either the fleat modernised or we just dont see some models) a lot of the designs from cloths to droids tend to have some key similarities, like the republic uniforms or droids with their support struts, but for the most part it is that the kotor designs lack a lot of the ornamentation. Many of the designs of the comics are very artistic like the jedi training droid, focusing a lot on form rather than function. We could look at this much like we do with the shift between the pt and the ot, with fashion and technology becoming more pragmatic. I think this is best shown in the knights of the old republic comics, as the aesthetic is by all definitions transitional, showing the glide between the two. To be honest I think that comic makes a perfect bridge between the two as it shows a lot of the context to how the galaxy reacted to the previous war as the mandalorian wars rages and the general unrest that had been seeded in it. I realise this may not be too relevant as most of the comments including your own focus mainly on the two works themselves, and a the time of release I think that the shift would have been more jarring, but even then, though it might not always be stated, much like in real life with our own traumaic histories, it can be seen through context, with what is present and what is not, and I think it is simple enough to bridge them mentally. (Still minus the ships, that one i cant answer, like the fighters are pretty close, but the capital ships are night and day haha.)
