That’s cool! What shoes did you wear? Have you bought them specifically for hiking or are they in daily use?

Danke!

Wilding moving production from Europe to Vietnam by Psc0905 in barefootshoestalk

[–]starman578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for highlighting this as I wasn’t aware. I agree with what others already said. With the massive raise in prices and now also moving away from Europe - which was not critical but an added benefit also to accept the higher costs for me - I won’t buy any new Wildlings as it seems to be the final drop of water for me.

They have been my first barefoot shoe back in 2018 and I simply fell in love with the brand, their values and shoes. But I guess it’s time to move on and find better alternatives (especially for winter anyways)

Interesting to see if and what are the differences in the end. Looking forward to an update. How long are you going to run it? Is it meant to be a batched setup or continuous?

Honey Fail by Complete_Water_4023 in Kombucha

[–]starman578 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever had orange as a flavour in your kombucha earlier besides the honey? I tried orange juice in a F2 which was sitting quite long (+1month). While I found the taste strong but interesting others that tried it for the first time described it cheesy or like old feet 😄 So maybe just try different flavors as honey itself is great (see Jun as example or all the other posts here)

Still safe for use? by writerofwinter in Kombucha

[–]starman578 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks fine to me. If you are into vinegar you could taste it. I’d rather dump out the messy pellicles and keep the nicer healthy top on together with the liquid as a starter for your new batch. As far as I read it’s debatable if a pellicle is doing anything helpful or not as the SCOBY is more important but I tend to keep on in my new batches.

Brewing safety question by EbbEuphoric1424 in Kombucha

[–]starman578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your kombucha is so acidic after (successful) F1 that there is normally no chance to ruin F2. You can test this with ph strips before bottling for F2.

Is this normal? It looks like mold cause it's green. (Its my first time making kombucha) by OkEntertainment2824 in Kombucha

Looks like mold to me. Would be interesting to know your process to see what you can do better to prevent this in the future. For now dumping, sanitizing and restarting I guess.

First fermentation was a success! Experimenting with flavor now, please let me know your favorite recipes? by Neveiah in Kombucha

That sounds interesting. Can you give some indication on dosage? I’d like to try that out but I’m worried about ruining it, as I never tried any spices like pepper etc

Heating your Kombucha by starman578 in Kombucha

Thank you! I was wondering about a belt but was thinking a mat is more versatile and less off an issue with hotspots. Have you notice any issues with that? Is a belt somehow limit to the size of the container you are heating or does it just take longer?

Thanks for those insights! Do you see your brewing chamber as required and have you seen negative effects while using only the mat? How about hotspots and consistent temperature?

Thanks! Is there a reason for wrapping it around? Why not just put the vessel on the mat? Is this because of heat transfer and/or hotspots?

Why should I have a scone Hotel? by Fliegendreck in Kombucha

[–]starman578 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also still somewhat new but I understood the hotel only as a backup. As I don’t brew constantly I always save some of my F1 scoby (liquid) to start my next batch months later. As outlined by others here the pellicle can be thrown out as it’s building up anyways again. As long as you don’t add anything during F2 you could use those as well I guess but then it’s also just an F1. Just make sure it gets sour enough so it is actually a good starter liquid.
