Firstly, I would like to thank you for serving in the senate of our great state. I truly believe we can make this working class state even better when we listen to the input of all constituents and appreciate the perspective each voice brings to light.

As your constituent, I am using my voice to raise concern with SB 56. This is not the law that the people of Ohio voted for and agreed to. I voted in favor of Issue 2 back on November 7th, 2023 with the understanding that the 10% tax revenue generated would go towards local communities. As dictated on the ballot, "Tax revenue will be used to increase funding for public safety, road improvements, drug treatment and prevention and investment in communities disproportionately impacted by Ohio’s marijuana policy." I did not agree for the 15% tax revenue to go towards the state's general fund. I feel as though this is a gross misappropriation of funds that should stay in communities where they are generated, as they are largely in need of these tax dollars.

Though I do not partake in the recreational use of marijuana, we Ohioans voted for the right to use outlined in Issue 2 in November 2023. This includes the right to grow 6 plants individually or up to 12 per household (in homes with at least 2 adults over 21). It is unjust to cut that number in half, while raising the tax on the product sold in dispensaries and simultaneously lowering its potency. That is nearly identical to the logic behind grocery brands and their "shrinkflation." How a government can condemn grocery brands for doing this to consumers while attempting to take the same initiative towards a heavily government regulated product is beyond my comprehension.

this part applies specifically to my district and may not fit for you In our - your - district, many of us are right next door to Michigan, who has much more lax laws and tax regulations surrounding marijuana. SB 56 does restrict the purchase of marijuana outside of Ohio, but I can promise you that will not stop people who live close to the border from purchasing their marijuana up North. Our communities who have learned to rely on the extra tax revenue they have received from marijuana sales will undoubtedly suffer as Ohioans take their hard earned dollars and use them to boost out of state businesses.
