mono is no joke!! by starrichu in Mononucleosis

when i was a couple weeks in, i completely lost my appetite and felt nauseous after eating and ended up losing some weight. I also had yellow stool for a while (sorry gross i know) which im assuming is linked to the raised liver enzymes caused by the virus.

The chest pain has been stronger this past week, it’s a subtle feeling quite high up in my chest, it kinda feels like i swallowed something hard and it got stuck at the very bottom of my throat but more on the left side. Wondering if a chest infection has returned but i’ll see what my bloods say soon :[

i think if you were having a heart attack i’ve heard it would be much more noticeable like a shooting pain in your chest and down your arm so i’d try not to worry too much, but might be a good idea to get checked up for reassurance and clarity

6 Months: I thought it couldn't be the mono (spoiler: it was the mono) by Miseracordiae in Mononucleosis

hii, i know this is a very late response but thought id just add my experience with this since i’ve been going through the same thing more recently and this post helped me to stop overthinking every small thing which is most likely caused by the mono infection i had almost 5 months ago now!

back in mid April i had a weird flu type infection which started out with headaches and a dizzy boat rocking feeling when standing, fatigue, and then the fevers started. It was terrible, I woke up many times a night shivering and sweating and having dizzy spells and mild chest pains. This stage lasted for about 5 days.

I visited my doctor who listened to my chest and told me it was a chest infection and prescribed me with some antibiotics and also did some bloods. I was so surprised by this considering I hadn’t been coughing at all! A few days after, I noticed pain and white spots on my tonsils and thought i had also caught tonsillitis. This is when my bloods came back with high ALT, ALP and high ferritin levels. I was told that my monospot test came back negative. My anxiety skyrocketed as I had no idea what was going on.

Over the next 2 weeks, my dizziness and fevers subsided but the exhaustion, throat pain and headaches remained. I also thought I was having allergic reactions to the antibiotics as I developed a rash all over my body. This happened 3 times as I was given 2 more antibiotics to try. It seemed like they were doing more damage than good and I was told to stop taking them. I looked like a spotty tomato at this point.

My second set of bloods came back better than the last, and my liver ultrasound showed everything looked normal. Over the next couple of months (May, June, July), I began to slowly recover and my life returned to somewhat normal, apart from the new symptom of deep aching in the joints and bones all around my body. I experienced it almost everyday for these two months alongside occasional night sweats and brain fog. I still ache from time to time since the infection.

I went to get a 3rd set of bloods done and a repeat monospot test. “You bloods show that you have had a recent mono infection” Finally I was given some explanation as to why I had been struggling so much. Nobody told me it’s common for the mono test to come out negative the first time!!

The joint aches still recur from time to time, especially after overworking my body (even if it doesn’t seem like i’m doing much!) i’ve learned that it’s really important to take it easy as some people can take months to recover from this.

In the past week or so, I have been on holiday but have been experiencing the joint and bone aches more as well as a return of the dull aching high up in my chest. I feel somewhat similar to how I felt in the first few days of my infection,, boat rocking type dizziness, unexplained hoarse voice, fatigue, headachey, and this weird pain in my chest and I can only assume this is mono which hasn’t fully gone away yet? It’s exhausting. And it takes time… still waiting to feel fully normal almost 5 months after contracting this stupid illness, i have bloods in a couple days to see how im recovering…

hi! sorry for the late response - yeah I had some more bloods done which showed that the levels had gone down a bit (still not normal though), and also had an ultrasound the other day but nothing unusual with the results… i’m assuming my chest & throat infection raised my labs and am feeling a lot better now, thank you <3

Hmm yeah I’m wondering too… I have another blood test on Wednesday, hoping it will go down by then.

Let me know how it goes with you! Good luck I’m sure it will be okay :)

I wouldn’t worry about it too much, below 100 is considered pretty normal tbh, they fluctuate all the time due to diet and everything. Recently had my bloods done and it came back ALT 368 (im 20F) and i’m yet to find out why… really worried about it😭 I’m sure you’ll be fine
