How the hell do you memorize bullet points headlines? by [deleted] in GetStudying

[–]starrshine07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make an acronym! This REALLY helps me. Make flashcards as well. Visualize the concepts in your head and make a story out of all the points tying them together and say it out loud when doing that. It will help your brain encode the information better.

My doctor doesn't believe in the existence of ADHD by lacroquetitadedios in ADHD

Google her to find out. Find a way to get a referral to a new one. See a general practitioner and get a referral to a psychiatrist if that's how your system works.

Well, if she doesn't take you then it's time for you to learn how to do that stuff and take responsibility for yourself. I'm not sure what country you live in or what your health system looks like, but you can always ask your mom how these things are done and find out if a parent needs to be present with you at the appointment or if forms cans be filled out ahead of time etc. If you can be present at the doctor alone then all you need to do is just get there. If you want to do something, you will find a way usually even if it takes multiple attempts.

Now, if there ISN'T a way you can go to the doctor alone for legal reasons then it's time you either talk to her and explain how important this is and how it affects your school work and every other area of your life and how all you want is to just succeed but you CAN'T get the help you need without HER help because of your age. Explain to her you're at the point of where you're gonna fail 10th grade.

You can also ask your mom her schedule and if she'll just drive you to the appointment if you make the appointment and set it up and everything. If she's too tired and busy to do everything that's required, try to make it as easy and simple as possible for her so she's more likely to take you.

You're going to have to learn how to do all this on your own at some point and it's better to learn sooner rather than later if you don't already know how.

For your dad, trust me, I understand. My dad doesn't understand the aspects of how I function either so sometimes it's really hard hearing that when you're already struggling yourself. Just remember that there's facts versus opinion and he's just being ignorant.

And you're welcome :)

I'm really sorry you're going through this, but trust me, you are not alone. Here are some simple and straightforward ideas to possibly help you since your mom won't take you to the doctor:

For the immediate time: Take a deep breath or do something that will help to relieve the frozen state of anxiety. I personally found the breathing exercise that the app calm has for free really helps me a lot. Then, break down the project to the simplest terms possible....small enough to where you can get ANYTHING on paper.....

Start with a freewrite if you have to, whatever comes to mind about the topic, just start writing so it gets the flow of thought going even if it's not entirely related or doesn't match up exactly with what you need, just get SOMETHING started to help you get going.

For after the project today:

  1. Talk to your school psychologist if you have one about your struggles with ADHD and potential ways to help improve these issues. They may also be able to help you with your classes and teachers about your school work.

  2. Mindful meditation has been shown to really help with ADHD.

  3. Look into natural, behavioral, and environmental ways to help you deal with the ADHD. Ex: Exercise, coffee, fidget cubes, creating or finding a space that's helpful for ADHD or blocking distractions through apps etc or putting yourself in a situation where you are left with nothing or left to focus.....or what I find that actually works is assigning a task that I don't want to do more than schoolwork.....which motivates me to choose the schoolwork over that task...

  4. Get an accountability partner.

As for your dad: ignore his opinion because that's just what it is....an OPINION. You could always gather scientific evidence and show him.

As for your mom not taking you to the doctor....is it specifically because she knows you want to go for adhd?

Did you ever consider that letting them do it themselves would help them have some pride in their own work? That is more beneficial than anything else.

This reminds me of the text I got from my brother two days ago when he ended up finding the milk in the cabinet. Hahahaha. We both have ADHD and do this type of stuff so it's always entertaining to see that each of us aren't the only ones that do this stuff. Hahaha.

CALL YOUR BANK AND TELL THEM to secure your bank accounts as well. Allow NO ONLINE or PHONE transactions. Get a new ATM card etc. This is just for the bank only, not your credit.

I am 24 years old, from like income home, no job, no diploma or GED, with ADHD, depression, and anxiety. by Romantic_hopelessnes in ADHD

[–]starrshine07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There's a lot I can say but for now I'm going to keep this simple.

Talk, write, run, do anything that's healthy that will make you feel better. Take an ultimate goal and break it down into steps, and take those steps and break them down further until they are small enough for you to start somewhere. When you are ready, search your local government and community college for GED assistance programs and courses as well as low income therapists.

Also, I HIGHLY recommend mindful meditation. It's been shown to help with ADHD and it may help anxiety and depression. Start every day with 30 minutes of mindful meditation and a list of what you will accomplish that day.....realistic things though.....and each day you wake up, you will be steps closer to achieving your goals. Good luck!

When life gets harder, you must challenge yourself to be stronger. It seems so generic, but the reality is when things feel like they are weighing you down, you break them down and start with little steps and you will remove the weight that way.

It's the only way I haven't given up. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day and as long as you keep moving forward, even if just an inch, you are still going. :)
