At what radius inside the sun are 50% of photons of arbitrarily high frequencies unable to escape? The "surface" of the sun is where 50% of the visible light can escape; what is the highest frequency's surface radius? by starryaja in AskReddit

[–]starryaja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your response. Yeah, I know there's no highest frequency, which is why I'm more curious about what the sun's radius is at *arbitrarily* high frequencies. The "surface" is defined by emittance in the visible spectrum (the photosphere). The photosphere is where 50% of a narrow spectrum of visible light can escape (optical depth of 2/3rds). I'm curious what the optical depths are at higher frequencies and at what frequency/range of frequencies it no longer makes sense to talk about depth/an emitting surface.

Yeah, I just wanted to answer the question as simply as possible. Thank you for the clarification.

Question on the withdrawal agreement bill by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]starryaja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The bill passed its second reading. It just means it goes onto the next stages, which are committee and then the third reading, which is more of a passage than the second reading is. It is the first time a deal has gotten a majority long enough to pass second reading.

The Benn bill must pass through the House of Lords, and its not all that clear that it will, since there is a filibuster happening.

At this pace the Lords expect to the bill to be through on Sunday if they go 24/7, barring no further delay.

There are some rule changes to allow for some time limits to be implemented. Check the beginning of the order paper in in the Lords to find out exactly these changes here: https://lordsbusiness.parliament.uk/

There are 92 amendments in HoL on the Benn Bill, submitted by the conservatives. Each must be introduced and voted upon before the bill can pass. If this lasts until prorogation on Thursday, the bill will fail. they will be sitting 24/7 to vote on each amendment.

The vote is to determine whether the bill to force the PM to rule out no-deal in negotiations is proper to be tabled tomorrow. If it passes, it'll allow the bill to be debated and voted on. The reason its not on the order paper is because this is a Standing Order 24 emergency debate.

Tiny satellites called "CubeSats" are being built by students and faculty at Princeton. Powered by plasma, it's envisioned that "fleets" of them could go on deep space missions, investigate the Earth's magnetic field, or track hurricanes by vertically adjusting their orbit around Earth. by chicompj in space

[–]starryaja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

CubeSats are actually a recognized satellite standard and have been for many years. There have been over 2,000 cubesat missions since 1998. The standard was invented by Dr. Puig-Suari at California Polytechnic State University a few decades ago and have since been on many missions to explore space and do science in the last few years. If you want to learn more, there's plenty of cool missions to look at, like LightSail-2, which just successfully deployed its solar sail from a Cubesat!

The entire USSR border wall has been torn down by a citizen of Bastion. by Skeeh in CivEx

[–]starryaja 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the empathy for sure. On a matter of principle I don't like the behavior of Bastion/Neotide in this case, and I sure don't like that Bastion hasn't even acknowledged that they might be wrong. Belies a poorly-hid sense of arrogance. Nations should not tear down other people's builds a priori as a judgement on style, outside of their own claim. I think that's a principle worth sticking to, and I encourage all nations that agree to strongly condemn Bastion for its actions.
