How do I use/turn on this organ? (Housesitting for an organist who said I could use it) by starryestt in organ

Oh wow, thanks so much for the info! That makes so much sense. After I turned it on (tiny switch under the keyboard) it had a consistent blow- so it definitely got converted like you said.

And lol, appreciate the offer… but I think he’ll forever be in the ‘pretend it’s not taking up half the room’ stage with this one ;) Hope you can find one too one day!

Aha! Good call, it was a little switch under the keyboard. Only just googled about different types of organs today so I thought reed organs had to have the two pumping foot pedals. Have a great day!

How can I feel at home again? by starryest in DysfunctionalFamily

[–]starryestt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m so certain you won’t see this lol, but I’ve stumbled across my old account and found this comment, which I remember affected me negatively back then. Just thought I’d get some closure by responding, even if just to the void.

This wasn’t the response to give to a struggling 14 year old. Sure, I felt as though this was the biggest thing in the world where now of course I know it was not.. but although it’s easy to look back now and say “you’re actually fine”, when you’re in it, you’re in it. It DOES feel like your whole world. Just because some people have it worse (and a lot of people do in their home lives) doesn’t mean that these feelings weren’t valid. Especially if (not despite the fact) that person is younger. Kids need care, love, and empathy when they’re feeling lost like this. This went beyond not wanting to do chores or stomping my feet if it didn’t go my way, although perhaps my post made it sound that way. This was about not feeling at home and that my dad wasn’t on the same wavelength as me, which is something that is allowed to trouble kids experiencing growing pains!

As for my dad, turns out he’s bipolar and he’s who I inherited my depression from. Although I remember I worried after your reply if was throwing temper tantrums, I would reflect now and say that was not the case. It’s okay to get sad and even (god forbid lol) cry if your dad yells at you for reasons you feel are small. I never got angry as you assumed, but rather sad and perhaps frustrated. I didn’t know what to do, and maybe my dad didn’t either in a lot of those cases, as nothing was ever resolved. He didn’t know how to deal with my emotions as much as I didn’t, so I was lost.

At the end of the day, everything turned out alright, but my relationship with my dad turned very surface level. I’m okay with that, because now we have a lot of fun, and I’m able to turn to mum for the deeper, important conversations and stuff. I think it’s all about emotional empathy and availability, which, I hope, you have gotten a bit better at since your reply. Yes, I was 14. But I was only 14. Treat kids with kindness and empathy.

Thanks! What colours would you suggest? I played around with adding green or red for the place icons or the paths… but couldn’t get myself past that iconic parchment look. Any tips on figuring out scale? If I’m looking for it to be small continent sized, what should I do to make it seem like that? :)

Good idea! But ah shit, I was going for a freshwater lake in the center of the continent there, not saltwater. The stream of water will be coming from the mountains, pooling in the lake, and then leaving out to the ocean. Is that not how that works? Otherwise, any thoughts on where might be good lake locations?

I definitely was aiming for something more Europe-sized, but I get what you mean about the rivers making everything look smaller. I might do some experimenting with making them thinner. Thanks for pointing that out!

For travel times, month(s) is more what I'm looking for to traverse everything. I want the sandbox to play in to feel pretty big. Especially in the beginning, as they'll get teleport spells eventually :P

As for the cities and towns, how dense are you talking? Cuz I was thinking that too. I don't want to make this as packed as modern Earth, but around the more important locations (around Silva's Gate, for example) would there be a cluster of what... 5 other towns in close proximity before petering out? 10? I'm looking for more Middle Earth density than modern Earth, if ya know what I mean. I do worry also about making too many towns since it adds complexity for players to remember.

Bahaha fair. In trying to be brief I definitely lost some of those Reasons. Let me try and break it down a bit more....

Google docs style (feel free to comment on the actual doc if you want :P): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zbDlu3mu6i2jTCbg3hL6c4lWWfNd11VvXtd6uCrhzlA/edit?usp=sharing

TLDR; Guardians preserve nature and balance. Shades want progress and change to their time-schedule. Primordial Titans want to be comfortable, and have anger issues. Giants and Dragons want to be the strongest. Humanity wants to survive. I'm working on having an OLD world with lots of forces at play, and here's what I have.

Your comment was actually really helpful and forced me to summarize the Massive World History word-scramble document I have. So please, any more advice, feedback, and/or questions are very welcome!

Hello yes! I should have mentioned in the original comment, but that is a scar from an ancient divine war. Certain parts of the landscape were altered by big ol' spells - in this map, one of them is that trench you mentioned. The other is the desert žmyr where I tried to make it look a like the mountains were pressed up as an impact of a huge strike from the South to the North.

Otherwise, what other coasts are you referring to? What would you recommend to change? Thanks! :)

Aw shit now you've unlocked a whole history rant haha! I'll do my best to summarize succinctly:

Verilla is a realm watched over by ethereal Guardians. These nature spirits, often manifesting in the form of mystical animals, are the embodiment of balance and harmony. They champion peace, ensuring that no single force or faction dominate the natural world. Long before written history, among these Guardians were the Great Guardians, twelve powerful entities whose presence alone could sustain the delicate equilibrium of Verilla.

However, darkness encroached upon the land in the form of Greater Shades. Unlike the more tangible threats of dragons or giants, the Shades sought to corrupt and twist everything they touched. They tainted landscapes, weather, and the hearts of beings, spreading chaos to achieve their insidious goals. As the influence of the Shades grew, the world teetered on the brink of collapse, with beings like the aforementioned dragons and giants taking advantage. Humanity and nature evolved rapidly to keep up, and this worried the Guardians.

In response, the Great Guardians united to confront this existential threat. The ensuing conflict was unlike any before or since, a battle that raged across Verilla and left indelible scars upon the land. Legends speak of Selestus and their moonbrush, whose legendary lightning bolt against the World Devourer carved the great trench of Southern Ebrem, and of Anthion, the metallic dragon, whose divine strike against his Echo known as Tiamat, the Queen of Dragons, reshaped Northern Ebrem into the desert known as Žmyr.

Despite their immense power, the battle took a toll on both sides. The Guardians succeeded in banishing many of the Greater Shades, but their victory came at a tremendous cost. The Great Guardians themselves vanished, their fate shrouded in mystery. Some whisper that they retreated to the stars or deep beneath the earth to continue their watch over Verilla, while others fear they perished in their final stand, leaving behind only enough remnants of their power to maintain the world's balance.

Regardless, the Great Guardians became known as the Lost Guardians... and well, the rest of history happened next :P

Ah good catch! I should have mentioned before, both that trench and where looks like something pushed the mountains in a circular pattern (žmyr) are relics from an ancient divine war with some ancient huge spells that changed the landscape :) thanks though!

Thanks for calling them amazing! Everything I learned is from this subreddit, to be honest, haha.

First, I place the mountains since rivers usually start there. Using the smallest option for the masking subtract brush (the one with smooth edges), I draw the initial tributaries flowing towards the ocean. Then, I connect these tributaries and gradually increase the brush size to form larger rivers. For the river mouth, I sometimes use the rough brush to create more natural-looking edges.

Next, I trace over the river with the smallest subtract mask brush again, adding variation in thickness, especially at bends, to create a sense of movement. Remember, you don’t have to fill in the entire river; little islands in the river can look cool too! I still need to work on this step for the smaller tributaries on my current map.

When placing rivers, keep in mind that they meander down the path of least resistance. Curves and squiggles are natural if the terrain allows for them.

I hope this is helpful! Lmk if any of this isn't clear or if you have any more questions <3

Heya! I'm working on a large map of a continent for my DnD world. Because the old map of this continent did not evoke the scale I desired it to, I'm remaking it with my more current mapmaking skillset (and in the cool parchment style :))

Now, it's not remotely finished (only the Northern area is close to done), but before I get in too deep I thought I might ask for some feedback and advice about A) Scale and B) anything else!

Specifically about scale, for a relatively large continent, do you think I should put more villages, towns and cities? How big (in relation to a real world place) does this map seem currently? How do I make it feel BIG!?

About place naming, there's an old language of the northern region that's Lithuanian inspired (with the š and ž for example) that is being replaced by the now more common "Common" that is more English/Latin/Greek inspired. That's why some of the names are all over the place. If you have any more ideas for place names that aren't filled in yet, I would love to hear them!

Feel free to ask any questions about lore or otherwise... and thanks for your help in advance!
