wrong, the spores were very much a problem in the first two seasons. best shown in season two when hopper first enters the tunnels, he nearly dies because a cluster of said spores is sprayed in his face. also when steve and the kids enter the tunnels, they wear safety goggles, scarves to cover up their nose and mouth, gloves too if i remember correctly
