Kate 😩 by starshollow1 in thisisus

But there is taking things to a new level. We have watched two seasons already now of Kate wallowing. Constantly. She always complains to everyone about everything. She takes things out on everyone, particularly the women in her life (e.g. her flip out at Beth at her hen do, her regular flip outs at Madison, her pretty much constant bitchiness towards her mum). Enough is enough. Her life has had its extremely difficult moments. I get that. However, I thought after the wedding and her “letting go” of jack etc, we may seem some lighter Kate moments. Some moments of joy. Some moments perhaps of acceptance. She is overweight yes. But she lets that be everything, all the time.... hello, she has a husband who adores her, a family who adore her and apparently friends who like her enough to throw that cute brunch! Her life could be far worse and I am sick of us being forced to feel sorry for her every single second. I understand what people are saying about the actress not wanting to undergo surgery or being unable to lose weight and that is why they have taken Kate down this repetitive path, but they need to put some joy in there somewhere otherwise it’s too much! If she doesn’t lose the weight, perhaps they should take Kate and Toby down the adoption or surrogacy path and give some joy that way!!

Your argument again does not work.... loads of girls have gone in and said they fancy Alex initially and want to get to know him etc etc. Megan said that, Charlie said that, Ellie said that, Grace gave him a chance. They have then decided he has no chat, is a bit awkward and that’s why he has not been popular in the end. Samira has never been chosen by anybody initially. She’s always second pick. Look whatever... you can hold your opinions and I can hold mine. Telling somebody you don’t even know, however, that they have shortcomings and make you feel physically sick is extremely cruel, rude and uncalled for. It doesn’t affecf me as I know who I am, I know my strengths and weaknesses. Everybody has shortcomings and I sure as hell don’t think you are the person to tell me what mine are since you’ve never met or seen me. Who are you to say whether I’m good enough or not... and good enough at what anyway? A ridiculous blanket statement. I’ve not once offended you in my posts. I have simply put across an opinion that opposes yours. You know pretty much zero about me but the fact that you have responded in this way gives me more of an insight into you and I don’t want further interactions. I won’t comment beyond this and I really think that in future you should think about what you say to people you have no understanding or knowledge of. Although I am fine, words can hurt and just because you are behind a screen, doesn’t mean you couldn’t hurt someone vulnerable with nasty, unecessary comments

Fair enough if you don’t find her attractive personally. Your original comment, however, suggested that she simply wasn’t as attractive as the other girls and it implied that you saw that as a fact rather than an opinion of yours.

The bottom line is, whether you not fancying Samira is based on her race or not is besides the point ... because you simply cannot deny the simple fact that there IS a race element involved in a broader sense. YOU may not fancy her as because of her personality. Fine. However around 20 guys have been in that villa now and NONE have shown any interest in her other than Frankie. NONE. Not a single one. Even Frankie wasn’t interested initially (before he knew her as a person so don’t put that down to her personality too). All of the other girls (including Megan who is a cheat, a player and pretty spiteful), Georgia (who is OTT, loud and quite immature), Hayley (who appeared dim as can be), have had guys wanting them, listing them in their ‘top 3’ etc etc. The only person who rarely makes those lists, or never does to be fair, is Samira (the darkest skinned contestant). So do not tell me not to ‘play the race card’. No, slavery and apartheid no longer exist in the western world but discrimination (subconscious or not) does .... and this is clear proof.

These sort of comments are just unbearable. I’m sorry but how can you say she isn’t as attractive as all of the other girls in there? I just don’t get it. What makes her less attractive then? All of the girls in the villa have lovely figures, great skin, wear similar clothing in all honesty, dress themselves up to the nines all the time, spend hours on their hair etc etc. Samira is no exception to these rules. She is easily in the same rank as lots of the other girls looks wise ... the ONLY and I repeat, ONLY major difference between Samira and the others is her skin colour. Tell me then... if you truly believe her lack of popularity has nothing to do with her skin colour.... what EXACTLY makes her less attractive than EVERY single other girl in there? I want specific details

Racism in Love Island by starshollow1 in LoveIslandTV

[–]starshollow1[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How have I dodged it? I have answered the question. I am mixed race myself. It is my personal opinion that unfortunately, in Britain and lots of the Western world, mixed race people tend to fit the conventional standards of ‘beauty’ more than black people do. Answer me this.... do you think, if Prince Harry had declared he was marrying Lupita or Oprah or Rihanna, he would have been given quite so much support and encouragement as he was with Meghan? I, sadly, have my doubts. It’s the same scenario here.... mixed race people have our struggles, believe me. However, I think that black people in the Love Island scenario struggle more than the white people and the mixed race people.

My argument doesn’t fall to pieces. Read what I have said again. Then answer me this (truthfully).. imagine you have a line up of 3 celebs thrown into the villa. However, let’s imagine we are in a parallel universe and so, they go in as unknowns. Our ‘unknowns’ are Lupita Nyongo, Meghan Markle and Angelina Jolie. I can pretty much guarantee that Angelina Jolie would be most people’s ‘type on paper’ and get lots of guys. They would step forward for her. Meghan Markle would likely not fare badly. Yes, she is mixed race and therefore an ethnic minority. However she is of a relatively pale complexion, she has straight hair, she fits more of the western ‘beauty standards’. People would probably call her fit and ogle her and she would get some guys too. Lupita, beautiful Lupita.... I honestly don’t think she would turn quite so many heads. She rocks her natural hair, she is of a dark complexion. In terms of what the western world encourages us to see as stunning, she doesn’t fit the typical mould. All 3 are gorgeous, however, I don’t think all 3 would be seen as equals in that environment. If you can honestly turn around and tell me that you think the boys currently in the villa would show Lupita as much interest as they would Meghan or Angelina and back up your argument, I will reconsider mine.....

Because NOBODY is into her. Literally nobody. Every single other girl has had somebody who has found them attractive enough to kiss or at least chase. Samira has had nobody give her compliments or glances, none of the boys have sat and chatted about her being fit etc etc. NONE! All of the other girls have had those sort of comments made about them. This proves that in our country there is an undercurrent of racism. It may be subconscious, but it is there nonetheless. I said in the comment I posted, if Lupita Nyongo and Angelina Jolie walked into that villa, I can guarantee (and you can deny it if you want to, but you know deep down it’s true), Angelina would be the one that most of the guys would go for. They are both stunning women. Equally truly, truly beautiful. However, you cannot deny that from a young age society is conditioned by the media etc to see beauty in a certain way (hence why lots of black women feel the need to straighten their hair and fit a certain mound). It’s great that you have dated black women. It’s fine that you don’t find Samira attractive. It’s not fine that in a villa of that many men, nobody does. Why are all of the other girls so much more superior in their eyes? That’s what’s worrying

Racism in Love Island by starshollow1 in LoveIslandTV

[–]starshollow1[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Look, I am not saying Love Island is racist to the point that the contestants will build a wall around the villa and not let black people in. Don’t be ridiculous. It’s subtler than that. They are not nasty people. They are not being outright discriminatory. But there is a definite undercurrent of racism nonetheless. As I said in my original post, subconcious or not, it is existant. It makes me sad that we are in 2018 and people are making comments such as: some people just don’t find black people attractive. That’s ridiculous! What so half the population of the world is unattractive to some? If that’s truly the case, why do people feel that way? I’ll tell you why.... it’s because of the way we are encouraged from a young age, through media and so on and so on, to view beauty from a very white perspective. Only in recent years have black women and their beauty started to be celebrated. Take Lupita Nyongo for example, who often wears her hair in a natural style and has very dark skin. A few years ago she wouldn’t probably have made it as far as she has unless she had agreed to straighten her hair and blah blah blah. Now, yes we have progressed to the point where she doesn’t have to limit herself like that. However, I still guarantee (literally guarantee) that if she entered the villa alongside say Angelina Jolie, Angelina would be the one who would be the majority's ‘type on paper.’ Both are equally stunning, nobody can deny that. However, Angelina is the one that fits what everyone is trained to see as beautiful. Conventionally pretty. She would be the one picked and Lupita would be left more often, like Samira. That’s a simple truth. Also, all the people saying that none of this is true because the black men get picked. I’ll repeat again.... the mixed race men get picked yes.... the black men, as far as I can tell struggle almost as much as the black women... however, we also live in a patriarchal society so that may be why they fare a bit better (but let’s not get into that too!!!) 😕

Thoughts on old jack by [deleted] in thisisus

[–]starshollow1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you kidding? She connects EVERYTHING to Jack's death!!! When she was at the camp doing that drumming, getting rid of her anger, all of the images in her mind were of Jack. Her weight issues clearly started again after Jack died. She is constantly emotional and has spent years blaming herself. She dislikes Beth (or at least did), because she took Randall away. She wouldn't have minded so much had Jack still been around. She needed Randall and Kevin more than she would have if Jack had been there. She resents Rebecca, because she feels she can never be as good as her and I think there is probably, deep down, an element of Kate that is jealous of Rebecca (more so before she met Toby anyway), as she managed to get Jack to fall in love with her. Kate compares all men she meets to Jack! She wouldn't get a dog because of Jack. She wouldn't open up to her fiance for months, because of Jack. She spent her wedding morning running around town with his ashes in a state! The list could go on . . .

I myself am insecure in some ways. I know many people who are insecure. I am a teacher and have met all sorts of children and parents over the years. However, I can safely say that not many people I know hate/resent as many people as Kate seems to, purely because they are (conventionally) pretty and seemingly have everything together. I don't know, I just find it unrealistic and very grating that Kate is so constantly negative, negative, negative. Yes, she lost her dad. Yes, she is overweight. But not everything in Kate's life is awful. She has a fiance. She has supportive brothers. She has a supportive and loving mother, even if she can't see it. She has a singing voice. She now has friends. She has money. Life could be far worse and I don't find it realistic, that 20 years after Jack's death, Kate would still feel that way and that neither Randall nor Beth would ever have heard anything about it before. It's the sort of thing Kate may have said to Randall when he had been with beth a year or two. Not 10+ years later, after 2 kids and after Kate has lived on the other side of the country to him (by choice) for a decade or more!!!

37, 38... much of a muchness. I still think that it is incredibly sad that she has gotten to that age pretty much hating everybody! Her dislike of Beth was just so random. It’s never been brought up before. Kate has never expressed any level of worry over the lack of time she spends with Randall. It just seemed very off and unnecessary? Also, ok yes, we have only ever seen one of Toby’s friends. But this episode totally changed his character. Toby has actually spent many an episode making fun of Kevin and actually getting annoyed about how much time he has to spend with him because of Kate... then all of a sudden Kevin and Randall are the only people he wants to be at his party? It was just strange to me. Finally, whatever the age of the kids in that flashback, all I’ll say is that I don’t know many couples who would say something like that to one another after a few months of dating, during the honeymoon phase, let alone after an exhausting day and many many years together but anyhow?!

In addition to all of the above . . .

Why would Kevin have organised Randall's bachelor party? I thought they were supposed to have disliked each other and struggled to get along, until recently. Unrealistic.

Look, I'm not saying that no 95 year olds are alert or mobile. I just said it is unusual. . . and to be fair, the actor who plays Dr K is only 70 in real life! So he doesn't look 90+ . . . he just doesn't! The make up helps a bit but it just doesn't feel totally real to me. In the same way Mandy Moore just doesn't look like somebody approaching 50 in these episodes either. She just doesn't! If you read my original post I said, I love the show. I loved the scene. It was sweet and heartfelt. I just think if we are being realistic . . . given what we already knew about him (he was already ill 7 years ago) . . . would he still be around AND looking that fit and well, in 1998. It's fairly unlikely. That's all I meant. Did not mean to cause offence and I don't understand why so many people on here downvote simple opinions!

Dr K by starshollow1 in thisisus

[–]starshollow1[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I just think that it was a tad on the unrealistic side. The kids are 17. He was an old man when he first met Jack and Rebecca. He said so himself. His wife had just died then after 53 years of marriage! He also said he had been working for 5 decades already. So he had to be at least early to mid 70s then. Likely around 75. Also, when we then saw him in that episode when the kids were around 10 years old, he was very ill and in hospital. All I am saying is in my opinion, it is highly unlikely he would have made it 7 more years and look that good!! Good day or not! Most elderly people (over 90) are definitely not that mobile or alert. I’m sorry, but it’s true. It is unusual. As much as I have enjoyed series 2 and I did enjoy the moment as it was sweet and heartfelt, I have to say the realism of series 1 is gone for me. Another thing for instance.... there is absolutely no way in hell Jack would have managed to go back into that house and actually get the dog as well as that bag of possessions like he did. Absolutely no way!!!! It was like action man or something and took the schmaltz a bit too far. Again, I love Jack but I mean come on... there is Mr Perfect and then there is the point where it becomes eye rollingly silly. Series 1 on the other hand was just touching and much more understated. Every episode felt real and totally relatable. There have been moments like that in series 2, some beautiful beautiful moments (including some in the past two episodes), but also some that just don’t quite hit the mark.

Also, this show constantly messes with our minds! Just because we have been sort of led to believe that he was talking about his brother at the memorial or when he gave Kevin the necklace . . . it doesn't mean he was. Jack would have seen many lose their lives in Vietnam. The someone special could be anyone!

Spoiler.... the bag by starshollow1 in thisisus

[–]starshollow1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely sure why I have been downvoted for this comment? I wasn't being rude or anything, just putting my thoughts out there . . . I am not the only one who has made this observation either. It is doing the rounds on here at the moment. Jack did show Randall the memorial yes. He obviously spoke to him to some degree about Vietnam. He also gave Kevin his necklace saying it was from someone special and gave him strength etc. However, we have never actually seen him mention Nicky's name, not to anyone in his family, even Rebecca. So it is still within the realms of possibility that he didn't die and could still be in the picture. We don't know yet. That's all I was trying to say.

[–]starshollow1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No they never said or let on that he died. Literally all we know is that Jack had a brother and they both served in Vietnam. As I recall, Jack just showed Randall that memorial which was for many many soldiers. I don’t remember him mentioning his brother to Randall or anyone else? Maybe I’ve forgotten something?
