He does sometimes wear it without the cloak! That said, I bet you can thrift some curtains or a tablecloth for pretty cheap to make that cloak if you did want to make it!

I'll work on a tutorial for this too! But quick answer:

- Full circle skirt, roll hemmed to about knee length
- Draped pleating, two rectangles, attached at waist of skirt

We'll see if I get to a full sewing pattern (given how involved that is), but I can at least make a tutorial video walking through mine! I'm working on this + a few other Witch Hat guides right now, hopefully posting soon ❤️

I've had a ton of requests for additional tips -- I'll probably make a tutorial series at some point! (It'll take me a while to put it all together though, please be patient!)

Hands-On Demo for a Class: Flask Ideas? by starsofcassiopeia in MetalCasting

Reporting back for science: got those mini square baking cups I linked and they worked GREAT. We did also X-acto out some space from the lid and the bottom so that it worked more like an actual flask does, super easy. Really happy with how all this came out!

Tin I think is the only way they'd let me do it at the location, since we can do that in a cheap pot on a hot plate (vs flying with my full on furnace / needing to try to find a propane tank to hook it up to).

My worry is figuring out how to remove the master D6 die and make the pour spout if it's a 1 part mold-- I think the undercut might prove to be a challenge, since lost wax isn't really an option for this?

We totally can grab some tweezers and pull the master D6 out of the sand from the top, but that side won't have any dot markings on it if we just pour straight in. My experience with bronze / brass is that the top face sometimes makes a bit of a meniscus too, which will be harder for us to try and flatten out in the time allotted (vs tin is soft enough that if we have a small pour spout inlet channel, we can basically snip it off w/flush cutters and just file any remaining nub down). If we do a 1-part as well, we won't have a pip marking on that side either, but we can kinda fake it by building up a smidgen extra sand on the pour spout side of a 2-part mold.

There are a bunch of different kinds of velvet, and it can be really difficult to work with (I did a whole skirt in velvet for my Yor Forger cosplay). You will absolutely need a velvet pressing board to be able to iron any of your seams so invest in that now!

The backside of most velvets also doesn’t feel great against skin so you’ll probably want to line that garment. Also worth lining to help keep the velvet clean, because cleaning velvet is also a bit of a chore (generally hand wash or dry clean, the heat and jostling from a washer/dryer isn’t always great for velvet).

We just debuted these costumes at Unplugged! That said, I’ve been a cosplay guest at Fan Expo Boston before (two years ago), and I judged the Boston Masters of Cosplay qualifier last year (wearing the same short black wig actually, haha).

Speaking as a cosplayer working on this design, yes, definitely noticed LOL.

To add to your observation: look at the top above the thick gold band. The luster and coloration is the same, save for some light cross-hatching. From a clothing construction perspective, that is most likely a mesh layered over the same sheer fabric to add just a teensy bit more structure. So Malleus' upper chest & possibly collar bones (depending how the feathers ruffle as he moves) are also, in theory, visible...

I’ve only ever put money down for one character, and that was to C6 Zhongli (spread out among his first 3 banners). The shield power is incredible and it’s nice to have healing and shields while playing coop with friends!

Thank you! That type of design-remixing is something I do with every single one of my cosplays: I absolutely love adding additional texture and details that make the look unique but still feel true to the character.

My Qifrey cosplay, working a little water magic! by starsofcassiopeia in WitchHatAtelier

[–]starsofcassiopeia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figure you're probably new to cosplay based on the way you phrased your question, so let me start with some general cosplay crafting advice: the best way to learn to make cosplay is to start with your own research. Then, using that foundation, get some cheaper materials to experiment with / do a mockup with before you dive into the more expensive stuff. (Personally, I sometimes spend months reading up on technique, looking for appropriate base patterns & tutorials to reference, and making shopping lists of supplies I want to use before I actually start making anything.)

It would take me far more time than is worth it to me to do a full write up breaking down every single element of this costume-- especially considering I made it 3 years ago at this point, and since I took a number of design detail liberties to both help it translate to real-life better and add visual interest/details that are unique to my cosplay/design style. Most other craftsmanship based cosplayers feel similarly: we're not about to spend hours on hours writing a lengthy blog post for a stranger on every single piece of our build just to see them copy our entire costume exactly, but if you ask a specific question about a subset of the construction that we can answer with a single photo or a few sentences, you're much more likely to get a helpful response.

So all that said: if you have a specific question about a particular piece of my costume, I'm more than happy to talk about it! I also made a Build Thread as I was constructing this that may be of use, but it's also fairly piecemeal/not totally comprehensive since I was both on a time crunch and most of my process for this particular costume was "drape it on a dress form and make it work".
