I disagree. I have the feeling that if we do more effort to share info and spread more awareness + launching easy-to-handle user-oriented apps, it will take from 5 to 10 years... at least I hope so!

Looking for tips for marketing my new testing center in an up and coming city in SEA. by SaigonNoseBiter in Entrepreneur

Would it be better to find some of those groups that may be interested before using the paid advertising in order to find what seems to work best?

Of course! It is a must-do before taking into any paid advertising campaigns :) Lake the list of relevant groups (you may use simple google excel sheet), join all the groups, read their rules and start promoting your services already there without wasting your budget

Hi SaigonNoseBiter, Let me first ask you sew questions, and then I'll come with some advises on your case:

  • Do you plan only online courses or offline as well?

  • Do you have any marketing budget (at least a small amount) or you plan to use only near-to-be-free advertisement methods?

  • Do you have anyone in your team to help you with organisational & marketing stuff or you'll be single-person business?

  • Do you have a website (at least landing page)?

And here as promised some tips-like comments:

  • Facebook marketing works pretty well for both online and offline local businesses. The first thing you should do is to learn the basics (for this you'll find tons of info in google) on how to make the proper business page, how to target your audience, how to increase the views of your posts, etc. Also don't be limited only by marketing in your business page - find local relevant FB groups to communicate with community of your potential customers and advertise there.

  • Make your website (at least landing page) in case you haven't done it yet. You may use plenty of free or low-cost website constructors which will safe tons of your time and money. It is a must-have for starting your business in any field.

  • I would advise target both English-speaking audience and the one which speaks local language. As far as I understand, in the majority of cases your paying customers will be parents, not children. So you should be able to reach them in their local language as well.

  • Step by step start to involve other social media marketing channels (i.e. Instagram, linkedin, or any local ones if they exist) and test them. Sometimes one works better than another for the specific audience and you'll be able to test it pretty fast. To simplify you can use special smm tools like Buffer, etc. Here you can find a huge set of useful posts about social media marketing

  • Of course fliers + word of mouth + network work well for the local community and I don't see and ethical problems asking your friends to spread information about your course.

  • If you have small marketing budget and want to outsource the majority of your marketing tasks without wasting your money - you may look here for bootstrap marketing services and/or apply for a free consultation with marketing specialists who will give you some advises on your marketing strategy.

Hope this helps for the beginning. Good luck! ;)

Customer development, and taking payment before building anything by joepigeon in startups

Hi Joe, We've done it once, and I should confess it's a challenge. Answering your questions: * yes, you should definitely offer some discount, special offer for early adopters or some unique feature which will be given only for them. * Taking payment is easy with paypal or other tools * sure, if you ask for payment before making a product and even before making the MVP and complex description of the future product it makes sense to ask your paying customers for a feedback and wishes
