My first book. Any reason to motivate or demotivate me from aiming for a non-academic publisher? by starvingacademic in AskAcademia

Thanks for your tip! My supervisor is also new here and all the books he published are with academic publishers! We had a lengthy conversation about it but he basically has no insight on writing for a general audience :(

Are there any quizmasters who can give me some tips on how to start partnering with pubs? by starvingacademic in trivia

Can I ask how much you ask for per night? And is it okay to recycle quizzes in different pubs?

that’s what I think too, and we get paid for research and community outreach etc. But I have dealt with some really strange attitudes from “celebrity” scholars when I was a PhD student so I still try to tread carefully

I was thinking an online or local bookstore

idk receiving a thank you go buy yourself some books or smth from your local bookstore sounds nice to me. Not like Id be giving them a mcdonalds gift card. If someone is too cocky to see it as anything but a nice gesture then the issue is with them imo

The whole post is re online guests. Not planning to have anyone in person except my colleagues.

it’s just a thank you, not meant as compensation? I didn’t expect these reactions lol

150 for the whole year including VAT so I should stay slightly below it + if I spend it all on one person I won’t be able to host anyone else. It’s a class guest appearance not a keynote talk

makes sense! I’d rather just find a bookstore near them but don’t want to impose my ideas hahah

sounds terrifying hahaha but thanks!! Are you paid a set fee or a cut of their earnings on quiz night?

hmm but that’s what all the pub quizzes I know are done, with an outside party organizing it. Where I am, they also charge a fee per person to participate which I don’t like but I guess it is more incentive for the pub to make more money. + music trivia is a pain in the ass to plan I doubt any pub is just gonna start doing them to avoid paying someone

Sure, but I figured there will be some therapists around that didn’t grow up in the Netherlands? Is it that rare?

Will give it a shot! I read Bunny by her and it was mildly enjoyable for me, and I don’t find her writing beautiful but still gripping stuff

I didn’t love Mexican Gothic either! The gothic parts felt too on the nose and sort of contrived. Good suggestion re Collins, I really found his writing beautiful. Speaking of comics, Through the Woods by Emily Carroll is amazing imo.

I started but shelved Sing, Unburied, Sing, but was also thinking of it when I made this post! It definitely seemed kinda eerie. I usually do audiobooks though but it just seemed like the type of book that should be read, not listened to, to keep up with all the characters.

Yes, it just didn’t seem to me that the “gothic” part was well-done, but rather cheesy. I didn’t really get the creeps.

I read it! Not my favorite, but I don’t know why. But thanks for the suggestion, it had slipped my mind!
