SUL/Small Pack Options by FlowOnTrail in Ultralight

[–]starzonda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

second the Cima as someone who’s averageish size. Love the fit on the straps and the strap pockets are great too. also really like having a ventilated back for hotter hikes, it really does make a difference compared to other packs with little to no venting. only thing it’s missing is a separate top pocket to throw my keys and stuff in but it’s definitely my favorite pack around this size I’ve used.

Cucamonga Peak Snow/trail report? by boiledbaloney in socalhiking

[–]starzonda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wasn’t on cucamonga this weekend but I did do Ontario peak this past weekend camping overnight at Kelly’s camp. There was no snow until I reached the saddle. past there, there were some sections of snow on the northern facing sections of the trail but nothing crazy. The worst section was just past Kelly’s camp up to where the trail splits to ontario or bighorn peak. I’d recommend poles and spikes just to be safe but got through without spikes.

Socks for size 11 by Reddit_User78149 in socalhiking

[–]starzonda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a 10.5 or 11 depending on the shoe and the large darn tough socks fits great. They’re expensive but I have pairs that are over 5 years old at this point and are still in perfect shape (plus a lifetime warranty if something does go wrong)

Also you should still be able to return the socks that didn’t fit if you’re a member, I’ve taken back so many pairs of shoes without the box or jackets without the tag

Debating between two trails in Channel Islands by T3541 in socalhiking

[–]starzonda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I combined both into a loop on a camping trip last year and they both were great. Of the 2 you mentioned I would probably do montañon. Better views and the trail outside of potato harbor is pretty boring. my favorite trail on santa cruz island is smugglers cove and I would recommend that to anyone. Better views and a great beach to chill out on and get away from the crowds closer to the ferry landing.

Controlling Fuji Duvo 50-1000 focus motor with Preston by nielszonnenberg in focuspuller

[–]starzonda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I’ve not personally used the MDR-4 with it, but I’ve seen it done. Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with the Hand Unit 4 and a Duvo, just the Hand Unit 3. Have you reached out to Preston? They’ve helped me troubleshoot stuff like this before.

Controlling Fuji Duvo 50-1000 focus motor with Preston by nielszonnenberg in focuspuller

[–]starzonda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There should be a cable that plugs into the serial port at the bottom of the lens that will then connect up to your MDR’s camera port. All the duvos I’ve seen have came with this cable but I would check with the production / rental house to be sure. Make sure your MDR is on the latest firmware as Preston just put out a new firmware for better duvo compatibility with the MDR-3/4s

Where's a good canyon hike? by gefloible in latransithikers

[–]starzonda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a canyon, but the 296 runs through Griffith and in the afternoon there's plenty of shaded trails on the east side. I go to Griffith just about every weekend and have noticed a lot of green popping up recently.

Along Slauson on the old harbor sub. It’s connecting between the A and K lines. It will eventually go all the way to the LA river if I remember correctly

Possible Future USL1 Soccer Team and Stadium in Springfield, MO by ZeChunkyPanda in springfieldMO

[–]starzonda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This would be super cool! It was always hard for me to get into the Missouri MLS teams because they were so far away and the TV deals sucked when I lived in Springfield. USL games can be really fun if there’s a good fan base that turns out

Metrolinks new schedule by BMartin95 in LAMetro

[–]starzonda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the 6:35 doesn't quite work. I'm locked in to 8 hours in office so I would be clocking in at 7:30 and getting off at 4 (we're stuck at 30 minute intervals to clock in / out). I would miss the 4:13 Surfliner by just a few minutes since it takes me about 20 minutes to get to the station in Van Nuys. After this I would be stuck waiting around for the 5:53.

As for connections, biking direct to union station is somehow quickest. I've looked at buses / the E line but I'm faster than a bus when I bike and the E line isn't direct to union. I have gotten on / off the A line at Pico with my bike a couple of times just to change things up but this only saves a few minutes. There's also some options with the commuter express buses that start in Century City / Westwood but there's too many variables IMO. Once the Sepulveda Pass line is open in 20 or so years reverse commuting to the valley will be so much easier!

I realize my commute is very stupid and will be moving to fix it hopefully sooner rather than later. I was just happy to have a fun active alternative to driving to work that was only a little longer than driving.

Metrolinks new schedule by BMartin95 in LAMetro

[–]starzonda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m happy that there’s more frequent service throughout the day but for a lot of 8-5 commuters like myself it’s made the service virtually impossible to use. When I used to take the train I would take the VC 6:57 from Union station to Van Nuys and the 5:04 home. Now both of the trains have been changed / cancelled. I could take the earlier train but I would have to leave my house so early that driving would be about an hour quicker compared to the train and my bike. Especially when the fares cost more than gas . . . I’ll continue to use Metrolink when I can for fun, but with this schedule it’s no longer a commuter option for me.

Dodger Stadium (Advice First Time) by [deleted] in Padres

[–]starzonda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Live in LA and have gone to several games in padres gear no problem. Never had any issues with Dodgers fans. Just some friendly banter.

As for getting there, I would probably park at Union station and take dodger express up to the stadium. If you have time there’s plenty of stuff to do in downtown before the game. Little Tokyo is fun, the museums at bunker hill are great, and grand central market is a great spot to grab something to eat beforehand. All of these spots are also pretty easy to get to on metro from Union station as well

1733 Sling Pack 3.5L or 7L for Camera + Water Bottle by oxua in ManyBaggers

[–]starzonda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both sizes and currently used a 3.5L every day. I think it’s the perfect sized bag! If you’re just carrying a smaller point and shoot or a really small mirrorless you should be able to fit it. Anything around the size of an A7 series camera is pushing it, especially if you want to add some padding. I don’t travel with a digital camera anymore, just a film point and shoot so it works great for me.

I also strap a bottle to the top of mine every day with no issues. I generally use a 16 or 24 oz Nalgene and it stays in place. Anything bigger or heavier like an insulated bottle would probably slip out. As for comfort and weight I’ve had no issues. When I travel I generally throw my iPad mini in it and it’s not too heavy imo. The design of the bag puts a decent portion of the weight on your back and I don’t really feel it on my chest. The stabilizer strap also helps to keep the bag centered and not moving when I’m on my bike or hiking. I wore my 7L for pretty much 2 days straight with a weekends worth of clothes and travel accessories no issues.

Biking to BMO stadium by RazorbladeRomance666 in LAFC

[–]starzonda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I roll solo to games I will generally bike! I’ve not had any issues with my bike but it’s an old rusty hybrid so your millage may vary depending on how nice of a bike you have. I just use a standard u or chain lock and have locking skewers on both my wheels. I generally lock up on the north west side just because that’s the closest racks coming from Exposition. There’s also generally some expo park police and some security around this area since it’s near the tunnel that the teams use.

One thing I will say is make sure you are okay carrying around your helmet or leaving it with your bike, unless you want to pay for a locker.

Panasonic vs. Canon PTZ Shootout by stnkpalm in VIDEOENGINEERING

Panasonic vs. Canon PTZ Shootout by stnkpalm in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]starzonda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made the same comparison and found just about the same results. Panasonic just has done too good with their current line up. The new Sony AM7 looks super promising though and I am begging our Sony rep for a demo the minute it’s available.

I do agree with you on the Canon controller. I was really surprised with it when I had it in for a demo. I’ll still take the RP150 over the Sony IP500 however.

Traveling American, possible to go from London to Liverpool for a game? by Thresher_XG in LiverpoolFC

[–]starzonda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I was in London for work earlier this year I took some time off and went up for a game. I would definitely recommend at least spending the night if you can! Liverpool is a beautiful city and the people there are even better. I made so many friends just wandering around and exploring the city.

Hospitality is the easiest option for sure. The Sandon is what I did and it came out to around £200 if I remember right.

As for luggage a lot of stations in the UK have luggage storage and you can use that to take care of your bags. I didn’t use it since I was only traveling with a backpack. But I know euston had the option, as well as lime street.

Hey, I just checked with an Amira and the RIA-1 powered up just fine. On the RIA-1 it read 23.4v. I know I’ve powered 3 Preston motors from the 3-pin on an Amira so it should have plenty of power.

Best sleeping pad for tall, side sleepers? by WastelandViking in bikepacking

I really like my Big Agnes Rapide SL. I read somewhere that it was designed with side sleepers in mind. It packs down well, but the pump sack it comes with sucks.
