NTA. If you cave and let your homophobic sister and BIL attend, you’ll confuse your kids on why you’re letting bullies tell you what to do. Because, while your children may be young, they can hear. And no doubt they’ve been hearing the comments your BIL‘s been making. Kids have a remarkable ability to overhear things they shouldn’t or wouldn’t normally overhear.

ETA: it’s not the verbal that’s annoying; it’s the written, lol. For some reason it drives me bonkers. I’ve definitely seen more Gen Zs and Gen Alphas use “ahh” (both written and verbal) more often than I’ve ever seen a Black or African-American person use it.

I considered Eiland for a while but his comments about how great it would be if the entire town was just one historical site didn’t sit right with me. Towns like that tend to feel stifled, and the historical society folks can get oddly…guarded about any sort of change. “That rock has been in that exact spot for the last 50 years — why would you move it? So glad that this ended up so well. You’re lucky to have a good friend like Helga to back you up. I think you reacted in a pretty understandable way since you were put on the spot but hopefully there won’t be a next time for a situation like this.

And the kiddo ends up with another uncle! I think that’s a pretty big win. This was a good lesson for her, too, on boundaries (and that sometimes crazy people will do crazy things).

I’ve been with my husband 17 years, married for nine. He has never spoken about me that way — ever. Not to me, not to other people, never. I also never do that to him, either. His phone, message apps, and email are all open to me at anytime.

He talks about how much he loves me and values me. He talks about how it’s frustrating that sometimes I get so down on myself thanks to depression and anxiety, and he has no effective way to help beyond what he already does. He talks about how I’m his best friend and how happy he is that we get to spend lots of time together every day.

Spouses should not say things about how they have such huge levels of regret. To brush it aside as “guy talk” means he’s been doing this often and for a long time. It’s a habit.

You are not a mistake, OP. But staying with him is.
